Be The Neehur!

On Thursday 5th of April 2007 a month filled with celebrations and concerts due to the 50th birthday of Porgy & Bess Jazz club (Terneuzen - southwest part of the Netherlands) was launced at the Scheldetheater in Terneuzen with a great opening concert. Toots Thielemans, (at the end of this month he hopes to celebrate his 85th birthday) with Kenny Werner at the piano and keyboards played some standards from their album Toots Thielemans & Kenny Werner (EmArcy 014 722) like Smile, What a Wonderful World, a medley of Sinatra Tunes ( All The Way - My Way) and a medley of song from Michel LeGrand ( You Must Believe In Spring - Windmills Of Your Mind and I will Wait For You). Toots Thielemans, who has been ailing for some month, showed that he is still a great musician on the harmonica; the instrument that is always near at hand, even when he wakes up in the morning. Each morning I wake up - with my wife on my left and my instrument on my right side, next to my iPod. At seven thirty my wife gives me my yoghurt and at seven thirty-seven ............. and he illustrates that he takes his instrument and plays on it. Always practicing, practicing, ............. . Kenny Werner will be a special guest on Saturday the 7th of April with a concert in the evening and master classes in the afternoon. This concert will be in the Porgy & Bess Jazz Club at the Noordstraat The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, directed by Henk Meutgeert, had plenty of space on the stage of the Scheldetheater, where they also played five years ago at the opening of the theatre. Henk mentioned that event but it seemed that he had forgotten the concert they gave at Porgy & Bess Jazz Club November 2001 where they proved that the complete Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw also fits in Porgy & Bess itself (including the audience of course). Greetje Kauffeld, celebrating her 50th year in jazz, sung some standards like Route 66 with the orchestra. It was a pity that this great combination only had time for a few tunes. The evening was completed by a new song of speaker - entertainer Maikel Harte, titled Be The Neehur! a title that is difficult to translate as it expresses the special place of Porgy & Bess in Terneuzen.

Op donderdag 5 april 2007 werd in het Scheldetheater in Terneuzen een maand vol feestelijkheden en concerten geopend ter gelegenheid van de 50ste verjaardag van Porgy & Bess. Toots Thielemans. eind deze maand wordt hij 85, speelde met Kenny Werner op de piano en keyboard ( daar zit een heel strijkorkest in) een aantal nummers van hun album Toots Thielemans & Kenny Werner (EmArcy 014 722) zoals Smile, What a Wonderful World, een medley van Sinatra nummers ( All The Way - My Way) en een medley van nummers gezongen door Michel LeGrand ( You Must Believe In Spring - Windmills of your Mind en I will Wait For You). Toots Thielemans, die de afgelopen maanden wat sukkelde met zijn gezondheid, zat weer als vanouds op zijn barkruk en liet weer eens zien wat voor een groot muzikant hij is op de mondharmonica, Dit instrument heeft hij altijd bij de hand, vertelde hij. Als ik op bed lig ligt mijn vrouw links van me en rechts mijn harmonika en iPod. 's Morgens om half acht krijg ik van mijn vrouw mijn yoghurt en om zeven over half acht, is mijn mondharmonika aan de beurt. Oefenen oefenen, daar komt het op neer, volgens Toots, die in een mengsel van Engels en Vlaams ook op zijn praatkruk zat. Kenny Werner speelt als speciale gast morgen, 7 april 's avond met zijn trio in Porgy & Bess in de Noordstraat in Terneuzen, voorafgegaan door masterclasses in de middag.Het Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, geleid door Henk Meutgeert, had deze keer genoeg ruimte op het podium van het Scheldetheater, waar ze vijf jaar eerder, bij de opening, zo memoreerde Henk, ook al speelden. Blijkbaar was Henk vergeten dat ze ook al eens in Porgy & Bess zelf speelden, in november 2001 waar bewezen werd dat zo'n complete big band ook op het podiumpje van Porgy & Bess past ( en dan kan er ook nog publiek komen luisteren). Greetje Kauffeld, die dit jaar 50 jaar in het vak zit, zong een paar standards, zoals Route 66, maar helaas was er door de strakke programmering weinig ruimte voor extra nummers. Reden te meer om te hopen deze prachtige combinatie nog eens in de richting van Porgy & Bess kan komen. De avond werd afgesloten met een meezinger van presentator - entertainer Maikel Harte, ooit begonnen in Porgy & Bess met een titel, die alleen te begrijpen is voor de Terneuzenaars zelf, Be The Neehur ! en die uitdrukt hoe Porgy & Bess verweven is met de Terneuzense cultuurgeschiedenis.
