April 1957, 50 years ago, Frank and Vera Koulen opened a lunchroom named Porgy & Bess in the Noordstraat in Terneuzen ( Southwest part of The Netherlands ). Frank Koulen, born 1922 in Nieuw Nickerie, Suriname, then a part of the Netherlands, became a soldier in the Dutch army. When the American forces fought agains the German occupiers Frank came to Holland as part of the allied forces and was part of the troups that liberated the southern part of the Netherlands.
In October 1944 he arrived in Terneuzen and felt in love with Vera he married in 1947. As the people in Terneuzen were not very used to black people in their streets he got the nickname De Neger (The Negro). After some years in the former Dutch East Indies where he was a military canteen manager, he returned to Terneuzen where he started the lunchroom.
Soon the lunchroom became a place where musicians could play their music and De Neger became the organisator of music events, like the first streetparade in 1967, with Frank in front of the band. Since 1957 hundreds, maybe more then a thousands musicians, from local amateur bands up to professional jazz musicians found a warm venue to perform in Porgy & Bess.
In 1985 Frank passed away and thanks to a lot of volunteers, directed by Maja, a contributor from the first hours, now manager of Porgy & Bess, the club stayed open for everybody who wanted to listen to good music. For me Porgy & Bess is a jazz club, but also blues, country, classical, cabaret, folk, modern popmusic and poetry can be heard in this venue, known all over the world.
This month the little town of Terneuzen celebrates this event with a month filled with special concerts. Tonight the 50th birthday of Porgy & Bess will be celebrated in the Scheldetheater with the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw featuring Greetje Kauffeld, good old Toots Thielemans with Kenny Werner. Mathieu Van Bellen and Karolinka de Bree, two classical instrumentalists on the violin and piano will bring some classical music. Jules Deelder and Bart Chabot, two Dutch standup comedians will conclude the evening.
I found a small fragment of Herman Brock jr. and the Eurocasters that play its bluegrass music on the stage in Porgy en Bess. They perform later this month in the club too. Enjoy it.

In de lunchroom die ze in 1957 startten vonden jonge aankomende musici een plaats waar ze konden optreden en sinds die tijd hebben er honderden, misschien wel duizenden, muzikanten opgetreden; van de lokale amateurbandjes uit Terneuzen zelf tot internationaal gevierde jazzmusici, die hier een warme plek vonden.
De Porgy & Bess Jazz Club staat dan ook overal ter wereld hoog aangeschreven. Toen in 1985 Frank overleed zette een grote groep vrijwilligers, onder leiding van manager en medewerker van het eerste uur, Maja, het werk van Frank voort.
Voor mij is Porgy & Bess vooral de plek waar jazz gespeeld wordt, maar er treden ook wekelijks country, blues, rootsmuziek, folk, klassieke musici op en cabaretiers en schrijvers lezen er voor uit eigen werk.
Dit vijftigjarig bestaan van Porgy en Bess wordt in de maand april uitbundig gevierd met veel optredens van nationale en internationaal belangrijke jazz musici. Vanavond vindt in het Scheldetheater in Terneuzen de aftrap van deze feestmaand plaats met optredens van The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw met Greetje Kauffeld, de mondharmonicalegende, good old Toots Thielemans treedt op met Kenny Werner en Mathieu van Bellen en Karolinka de Bree geven een klassiek tintje aan het geheel. De avond wordt afgesloten met de twee standup comedians Jules Deelder en Bart Chabot.
