Op de voorkant van het laatste Jazzism magazine, één van de meest gelezen glossy jazztijdschriften van ons land, staat op de voorkant een foto van Benjamin Herman die ons trots zijn gewonnen Edison toont met als bijschrift Hebbes. Hij ontving deze prijs voor de plaat Campert - De Tijd Duurt Eén Mens Lang, gewijd aan de bekende Nederlandse schrijver en dichter Remco Campert. Het is niet zijn eerste Edison, zoals je wellicht zult denken, maar zijn derde alweer. De eerste kreeg hij voor de plaat BIG met zijn New Cool Collective (2000) en de tweede voor het album onder eigen naam opgenomen: Heterogenity (2005), gemaakt samen met Misha Mengelberg. De Edison is één van de oudste muziekprijzen ter wereld en geldt, sinds 1960, als de belangrijkste Nederlandse prijs voor populaire muziek. Alleen de Grammy is een jaartje ouder. De muziek voor Campert ontstond als de soundtrack voor de gelijknamige documentaire en werd, uitgebreid met nog wat nummers, de basis voor de CD uitgave.

Benjamin Herman heeft onlangs, op zijn eigen label Roach Records, een nieuwe plaat uitgebracht, getiteld Hypochristmastreefuzz, geheel gewijd aan de muziek van de Nederlandse componist Misha Mengelberg, de eminent grise van de Nederlandse (free)jazz op piano, meester in het improviseren, die al in de jaren zestig naam maakte in de free jazz scene. Hij ontwikkelde zich tot een belangwekkend componist in de hedendaagse geimproviseerde muziek. Het album werd begin december 2008 uitgebracht.

Afgelopen weekend, zondagmiddag 21 december 2008, trad Benjamin Herman op met zijn kwartet in de Porgy en Bess Jazzclub in Terneuzen. Het concert, het laatste geplande jazzoptreden van dit jaar in dit ver buiten Zeeland en Vlaanderen geliefde jazzpodium, was helemaal gewijd aan de muziek van Misha Mengelberg en voor de musici het laatste concert van een lange reeks promotieconcerten. Voor Benjamin Herman, die de altsaxofoon bespeelt, Anton Goudsmit op gitaar (weer voortreffelijk op dreef), bassist Ernst Glerum en slagwerker Joost Patocka bouwden een klein feestje op het podium voor een goed gevulde zaal, waarin opvallend veel jongeren te bespeuren vielen.

De eerste set, die opende met het nummer Een Beetje Zenuwachtig, zo'n typische Mengelberg compositie, zoals die geschreven zou kunnen zijn in de jaren zestig; beginnend in een kakofonie van geluiden en uitgroeiend uit tot een swingend nummer met een stevig ritme, bevatte verschillende titels van de nieuwe CD zoals No Idea en De Sprong O Romantiek Der Hazen. Ook werden er nummers van het Itch album gespeeld, zoals Do The Roach, Arachibutyrophobia, over een zeldzame pindakaasallergie en het door Doris Day met het orkest van Harry James in 1951 op Columbia opgenomen nummer Would I Love You Love You Love You, dat in de Amerikaanse top 20 wist door te dringen.

Tijdens de tweede set verraste Ernst Glerum (wat een mooi geluid heeft hij) met een spetterende solo in het nummer Rollo III en Piet Noordijk werd geëerd in Misha's compositie Blues After Piet. Beiden hebben me persoonlijk verzekerd dat er echt geen ruzie was: rakelde Benjamin een oude vete op, die begin 1967 leidde tot de breuk tussen Misha en Piet en het opheffen van hun Misha Mengelberg / Piet Noordijk Kwartet. Met Kwela P Kwana, een calypso, eerde Misha de Zuidafrikaanse saxofonist Dudu Pukwana, waarmee hij in de jaren zeventig met o.a. Han Bennink, speelde; de altist, die, volgens Benjamin, een schitterend geluid had. Met Brozziman, een compositie bestaande uit slechts 2 noten, schreef Misha een nummer voor de Duitse saxofonist Peter Brötzmann, die nog steeds leeft, volgens Joost Patocka, die vanachter zijn drumstel even snel de laatste informatie gegoocheld had, een icoon van de Europese free jazz beweging uit de jaren zestig; de man die louter rauwe klanken voortbracht, zoals Benjamin demonstreerde.

Misha schreef ook een bluesachtig nummer, getiteld Arm Wiel, geinspireerd op een thuiskomertje, een klein wieltje dat sommige automerken als reserveband meekrijgen. De set werd afgesloten met het titelnummer Hypochristmastreefuzz, een "adembenemende" compositie, volgens Benjamin Hermans, die Misha speciaal schreef voor Eric Dolphy. Het nummer werd gespeeld in het VARA radio programma rond Eric Dolphy begin juni 1964 dat bekend zou worden als Eric Dolphy's Last Session omdat hij tegen het eind van die maand plotseling overleed. De titel Hypochristmastreefuzz betekent Troep onder de Kerstboom, vertelde Misha aan Michiel de Ruyter. Ik denk dat ik binnenkort deze laatste Last Session, die als één van Dolphy's beste de geschiedenisboekjes in gegaan is, als blog in de schijnwerpers zet. Als toegift speelde Benjamin Herman in Terneuzen het door Elvis Presley bekend geworden nummer C.C. Rider, voor deze gelegenheid in C, met een knipoog naar de titel.

Dit concert door het Benjamin Herman Itch Kwartet was het laatste jazzconcert dat gepland stond voor dit jaar; een jaar waarin heel wat moois langs kwam in Porgy en Bess. Wat dacht je van: Roy Hargrove ( traditiegetrouw zullen we hem ook wel weer in 2009 te horen krijgen), Monty Alexander, John Marshall met Ferdinand Povel, Pierre Courbois, Rein de Graaff met Pete Christlieb en "borstelkoning"Jeff Hamilton. Je kunt een volledige lijst van concerten, die ik in 2009 heb mogen bijwonen vinden in de concertlog van 2008.

On the cover of the latest Jazzism magazine, one of the leading Dutch glossy jazz magazines, you can find a picture of Benjamin Herman who shows his latest Edison award, subtitled with the slogan: Hebbes, which could be translated as Got It! He received it for his album Campert - De tijd Duurt Eén Mens Lang, dedicated to the Dutch writer and poet Remco Campert. It's not
his first Edison award, but the third one. The first one was for the album BIG with the New Cool Collective (2000) and the second one was for his album Heterogenity (2005), made in cooperation with Misha Mengelberg. The Edison award is one of the eldest music awards in the world (the Grammy is only one year older) and the most important one for the Dutch music scene since 1960.The music for the Campert album was in fact used for a documentary around this author, augmented with some extra music to create a complete album.

Benjamin Herman has released a new album, titled Hypochristmastreefuzz which is dedicated to the music of Misha Mengelberg, the Dutch eminent grise on piano, master in improvisation, who started his career in the 1960s in the free jazz circuit. He developed into a unique composer in contemporary jazz. The album was released on the first of December 2008.

Last weekend, the 21st of December 2008, Benjamin Herman performed with his quartet in the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen in the south west part of The Netherlands. This concert, the last jazz concert for 2008 scedulded in this popular club, was complete dedicated to the music of Misha Mengelberg and for the musicians the final concert in a lengthy series of promo concerts. Benjamin Herman, who plays the alto saxophone, Anton Goudsmit on guitar, bass player Ernst Glerum and drummer Joost Patocka threw a party on stage before a mixed audience of different ages - from young ( 5 years) to not so young anymore (70-plus).

In the first set, which opened with the tune Een Beetje Zenuwachtig (= A Bit Nervous), a typically Misha Mengelberg composition from the 1960s, which started as a sound check and developed to a swinging tune with a steady drive, contained several tunes from the new album like No Idea and De Sprong O Romantiek Der Hazen (=The Romantic Jump Of Hares), but also tunes from his popular album The Itch: Do The Roach, Arachibutyrophobia, about a rare peanut butter allergy and the Doris Day tune, made famous on a Columbia Record by the Harry James Orchestra in 1951, titled Would I Love You Love You Love You.

In the second set Ernst Glerum (he really has a great sound) surprised with a great bass solo in Rollo III and Piet Noordijk was honoured in Misha's composition Blues After Piet. Beiden hebben me persoonlijk verzekerd dat er echt geen ruzie was, ( = Both told me personally that there were no arguments), Benjamin blabs, referring to the controversial split in the Misha Mengelberg / Piet Noordijk Kwartet in early 1967 that set Misha and Piet at odds with each other. In Kwela P Kwana Misha honoured the late South African alto saxophone player Dudu Pukwana; the alto player with the great sound, with this humoristic composition. In Brozziman, a two-tones composition, Misha honoured the German saxophone player Peter Brötzmann, still alive, Joost Patocka googled for the latest information behind his drum set, an icon from the free jazz 1960s period, with his rough tone imitated by Benjamin in a great way.

In Arm Wiel (= Poor Wheel), Misha made a bluesy tune about a thuiskomertje, a small spare wheel and, last but not least, the title song, the breath-taking Hypochristmastreefuzz, a composition Misha made for Eric Dolphy and played at the VARA radio program of the 2nd of June 1964, which would become famous as Dolphy's Last Session, as he passed away at the end of June 1964. The titled means, as Misha explained to Michiel De Ruyter, Troep onder de kerstboom, which can be translated as Rubbish under the Christmas tree. Thanks to Herman I think I should discuss this great "last" Eric Dolphy session in one of the coming blogs. The concert was finished with an improvisation to the tune C.C. Rider, made famous by Elvis Presley and played, referring to the title, in the key of C.

This concert by the Benjamin Herman Itch Quartet was the final concert of a series of jazz concerts for 2008 in the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen - concerts with great names as Roy Hargrove ( he also will make his appearance next year), Monty Alexander, John Marshall, Pierre Courbois, Rein de Graaff with Pete Christlieb and Jeff Hamilton.
