Bossa Britanica

Yesterday I went to Tilburg by car, a city in the south of The Netherlands, about one and a half hour from my residence. I had an appointment with Earl Okin, vocalist, guitar player and entertainer who is in Holland for two performances at the Stranger than Paranoia festival in the Paradox jazz club in Tilburg. I told about him in a previous blog.
We had lunch together in a lunchroom at the Heuvelring in the centre of the city, omelet with mushrooms, bacon and pepper and chocomel for drinks.
We talked about his performance at a full house Paradox club last night, where he had to announce the artists and entertain the audience with his songs and acts. Of course we talked about our common interests, like record collecting, durium records ( Earl has a few durium records, featuring Al Bowlly in his large collection of 78s) and his career which started in fact at the age of 12 when he appeared on a BBC TV talent show called "All Your Own", he wrote song for Cilla Black and Georgie Fame, went on tour with Van Morrison and was asked to support Paul McCarthy and Wings. Then he became a fully professional being a comic in the London alternative comedy circuit, where they throw things to you ..... (as he explains on his CD Musical Genius & Sex Symbol). While on tour and performing all around the world Earl met a lot of interesting persons and performed with musicians like Stephane Grappelly, he met Benny Carter and Earl Hines, is captivated by Duke Ellington ( he values his piano playing more then his ensemble work ) and by his 78rpm recordings of legendary opera heroes like Enrico Caruso. In 1964 he learned about the bossa nova and this Brazilian music fascinates him.
On his album Earl Okin - Musical Genius & Sex Symbol, he plays a great bossa nova styled Swonderful originally recorded by George Gershwin and pokes fun with the Portuguese pronounciation of names like Joao Gilberto or Antonio Carlos Jobim and with the music business, where A & R men ( under 19 years old with one ear ring, tone deaf or just deaf and an IQ too low to get into the army forces) copy hits because the people love to hear that ...
I learned that he, although billed as the Comic Musical Genius & Sex Symbol, in fact loves to play bossa novas. In 1975 he went to Brazil and played with Brazilian samba and bossa nova legends like Elis Regina, Gal Costa and Joao Gilberto and surprised the Brazilian critics with his bossa compositions. He gave me a copy of his still unpublished CD Earl Okin - Bossa Britanica, which shows another side of Earl - his pashion for the Brazilian music. It contains 16 tracks of most own compositions, some bossa novas, some jazzy instrumentals using the guitar and sometimes overdubbed with piano and bass. Earl sings on some tunes in a smooth way, so typically for this music style sometimes accompanoed by himself on the so-called vocal trumpet or virtual trumpet, he also uses in his comic shows. I liked his own compositions Madrugada (Spirit of Dawn) and Guitar Samba (Samba do Violao) and his tribute to Duke Ellington Pitter Panther Patter on piano and bass.

Gisteren ben ik met de auto naar Tilburg gereden, zo'n anderhalf uur rijden van mijn woonplaats, voor een ontmoeting met Earl Okin, zanger, gitarist en entertainer. Hij treedt morgenavond ( zondag 30 december) nog op tijdens het Stranger than Paranoia festival in de Paradox jazzclub in Tilburg. Ik heb al over hem verteld in een eerdere bijdrage.
We hebben samen geluncht in een lunchroom aan de Heuvelring in het centrum van de stad: omelet met champignons, spek en pepers; en chocomel.
We spraken over zijn optreden in het afgeladen Paradox de avond daarvoor, waar hij de artiesten moest aankondigen en tussendoor het publiek moest vermaken met zijn liedjes en conferences. We hadden het natuurlijk over onze gezamenlijke interesses, zoals het verzamelen van gramofoonplaten, over de kartonnen duriumplaten, waarvan hij er ook een paar heeft met Al Bowlly, en over zijn carriere, die in feite begon, toen hij als 12 jarige optrad in een talentenjacht in het programma "All Your Own" voor de BBC televisie. Hij schreef songteksten voor Cilla Black en Georgie Fame, ging op tournee met Van Morrison en werd gevraagd als voorprogramma bij Paul McCarthy and Wings. Toen het allemaal goed liep, werd hij beroeps en richtte zich voornamelijk op het, zo hij dat noemt, alternative comedy circuit, where they throw things to you ..... ( = het alternatieve comedie circuit, waar ze allerlei dingen naar je kunnen gooien .... ) ( zoals hij nader uitlegt in één van zijn conferences op zijn CD Musical Genius & Sex Symbol.). Tijdens zijn optredens ontmoet hij een heleboel interessante mensen, die uiteraard allen ter sprake komen, zoals Stephane Grappelli, waarmee hij optreedt, Benny Carter, die hij hogelijk bewondert, Earl Hines en Benny Waters. We praten over zijn passie voor Duke Ellington, die hij vooral als pianist zeer waardeert, zij het minder als bandleider, over zijn liefde voor de opera, met legendarische namen op zijn 78-toerenplaten als Enrico Caruso. In 1964 leert hij de bossa nova kennen en deze Braziliaanse muziekstijl boeit hem zeer. Op zijn plaat Earl Okin - Musical Genius & Sex Symbol, speelt hij een schitterende bossa nova versie van het nummer Swonderful, een George Gershwin compositie en steekt de draak met de Portugese taal bij het uitspreken van de namen van Joao Gilberto en Antonio Carlos Jobim en de hedendaagse muziekindustrie, waar de A & R men ( always under 19 years old with one ear ring, tone deaf or just deaf and an IQ too low to get into the armed forces) (altijd jonger dan 19 jaar met één oorringetje, geen muzikaal gehoor of doof en een IQ waarmee je zelfs niet in militaire dienst kan), hit na hit kopiëren en uitbrengen omdat "men" dat wil horen......

Ik kreeg een copie van zijn nog onuitgegeven CD Earl Okin - Bossa Britanica, waarin een andere kant van Earl naar voren komt - die van de serieuze muzikant, die laat horen dat hij geboeid is door deze soort muziek. In 16 nummers, meest eigen composities, bossa nova's, maar ook jazzstukken al dan niet met zang, gespeeld op de gitaar, later ingevuld met piano.
