Earl Okin

Isn't that great............. Yesterday a friend, Henriette, mailed be about a festival in Tilburg, a city in the southern part of The Netherlands. The festival is called: Stranger Than Paranoia and is sceduled in Paradox, a venue in Tilburg between the 24th up to the 29th of December.

And guess who's one of the guests? Earl Okin, stand-up comedian, singer, guitar player and .............. record collector from London !!

I love to share with you two interviews I found about his career: The first one is a lengthly interview with him on Long Beachin with Mo, a talk show on an US TV channel. It takes half an hour, but it is very informative.

A second interview is much shorter - it was made for PodTV-3 in London, the place where he lives: Earl tells about his career, his passions and plays and sings his music.

How did I learn Earl Okin? Well, my first contacts with Earl were on the 78-l list, where people love to share their passion for 78rpm recordings. Earl is one of those frequent visitors and loves to talk about his collection of opera records. Later I learned about his carreer as a comedian, singer and entertainer. He loved to share with the other members of that list, the stories of trips and tours to far remote territories in the world. A year ago I found one of his albums, titled Earl Okin - Musical Genius & Sex-Symbol and bought it. It was my first acquaintance with his music. I really liked his cynical humor and jazzy songs like Teenage Dirtbag, Mango, Bessie Bessie Bessie and My Room, that became hits. I found a small biography that I love to quote: Earl Okin's career is a remarkable one. Singing and performing before he could walk, or even talk, Earl first appeared on TV during the 50's when he was 12, yet is still contemporary, performing on MTV2. He performs what he claims are the original Bossa Nova versions of songs. He sings, plays guitar and a virtual trumpet. It's a pity that I didn't know earlier that Earl was performing here in Holland, so it is impossible now to be at one of his concerts. I hope to meet him tomorrow in Tilburg, to meet him, to talk to him and to share our common passions.

Is dat niet leuk ......? Gisteren wees een vriendin van me, Henriette, op het Stranger than Paranoia festival in Tilburg, dat me, eerlijk gezegd, helemaal ontgaan was. Dit festival vindt plaats van 24 t/m 29 december in Paradox in Tilburg. Toen ik ging uitzoeken wat ik allemaal ging missen, ontdekte ik dat Earl Okin zou optreden en het programma aan elkaar zou praten.

Ik vond een lang interview, dat hij begin dit jaar voor het praatprogramma Long Beachin with Mo opnam voor een Amerikaanse TV-zender. Het duurt weliswaar een half uur maar geeft veel informatie. Voor diegene die dit te lang vinden heb ik ook een korter interview gevonden voor PodTV-3 uit Londen; ook hierin vertelt Earl over zijn muziek, zijn passies en speelt en zingt hij.

Hoe ken ik Earl Okin eigenlijk? Mijn contacten lopen via de 78-L nieuwslijst, een groep fanatieke verzamelaars van 78-toeren platen op allerlei gebied. Earl Okin is één van de leden van de lijst en hij heeft zich toegelegd op het verzamelen van voornamelijk opera's op 78-toeren. Tussen zijn berichtjes door gaf hij ook altijd verslag van zijn tournees als entertainer; tournees, die hem in alle uithoeken van de wereld deden belanden en soms spannend leesvoer opleverde.
Een jaar geleden liep ik bij toeval een CD tegen het lijf, getiteld Earl Okin - Musical Genius & Sex-Symbol en uiteraard heb ik die gekocht. Ik was benieuwd naar zijn muziek. Ik heb genoten van die plaat: ik hou van zijn cynische humor ( de titel verwijst daar al naar) en jazzy-liedjes zoals Teenage Dirtbag, Mango, Bessie Bessie Bessie en My Room. Deze titels staan soms al jaren op zijn repertoire en komen steeds terug in zijn optredens. Zijn carriere is opmerkelijk. Hij zong al voordat hij kon lopen, zelfs voordat hij kon praten, hij was al op TV te zien in de jaren vijftig toen hij twaalf jaar oud was en is tegenwoordig regelmatig te zien op MTV2. Hij zegt dat hij de enige echte bossa nova kan spelen. Hij bespeelt de gitaar en de virtuele trompet. Wat dat is kun je in het laatste fragment zien, waarin hij My Room vertolkt.

Het is natuurlijk jammer dat ik niet eerder wist dat Earl Okin zo dichtbij zou optreden, dus lukt het me niet meer om één van zijn optredens (vanavond en op zaterdag 29 december) mee te maken. Ik hoop hem morgen tussen zijn optredens door in Tilburg te ontmoeten en bij te praten over onze gemeenschappelijke interesses.
