Cotton City Jazz Band In Concert

On Sunday afternoon, the 11th of May 2008, the Cotton City Jazz Band, based in Ghent (Belgium), performed at the inner court of the abbey in Middelburg in the south west part of The Netherlands, as part of the second International Jazz Festival Middelburg. Romain Vandriessche and his men brought their music for about hundred listeners, who enjoyed the good music and nice weather. We zitten hier in een delta, we wonen onder de zeespiegel, de temperatuur is in orde, net als de muziek. dit moet dus ... New Orleans zijn. ( = We are here in a delta, we live below sea level, the temperature is ok, the music too, so this must be .... New Orleans ), announcer Sjef Hermans suggested, but the relaxed atmosphere, the audience having their drinks, all generations mixed, enjoying the music and the sun, reminded me to the film Jazz On A Summer's Day, a registration by Bert Stern of the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival. But, sorry, Sjef opened our eyes ... dit is gewoon Middelburg ( = this is just Middelburg).
The Cotton City Jazz Band, featuring Eddy Sabbe on clarinet and tenor saxophone, Philip van Dost on trumpet, Romain Vandriessche on trombone ( all band members say he's the leader ...), Alain Lesire op piano, Herman Sobrie on bass and Jean Pierre Roulant on snare drum played their New Orleans music. Numerous tunes from the New Orleans repertoire were played, like Beale Street Blues, Honky Tonk Town ( with a reference to Dendermonde, the hometown of the Honky Tonk Jazz Club), Linger A While, Irving Berlin's Alexander's Ragtime Band, Alice Blue Gown and the seldon played tune Second Line.
This Cotton City Jazz Band plays the New Orleans music in a very pure form, no strange quirks or theatrics, which makes it a pleasure to listen to it. It has that easy relaxed, a bit dancing sound as played by the musicians of the 1920s living in New Orleans. And these men know how it ought to sound. In the 1970s the band recorded with legendary musicians like Percy Humphrey, Don Ewell, banjo player Emmanuel Sayles and Alton Purnell to name some. Romain Vandriessche remembered in his introduction for the tune Bogalousa Strut their meeting with Andrew Morgan, reed player and vocalist on the 1927 Sam Morgan's Jazz Band recordings for Columbia.
These band is an expert in spirituals, like Just A Closer Walk With Thee, which was played very modest at the beginning and ended in a more uptime tempo. Great !!

Remember; both the Cotton City Jazz Band and Archie Shepp, who was playing the previous evening on the same stage, make music which has it source in the Mississippi delta: so in fact .. De relaxte sfeer, de mensen die ongedwonen aan hun koele drankjes nipten, jong en oud door elkaar, licht onderuitgezakt genietend van de zon en de muziek deed mij eerder denken aan de film Jazz On A Summer's Day, een registratie van het Newport Jazz Festival uit 1958. Maar goed ... Sjef hielp ons uit de droom - dit is gewoon Middelburg !!

Ze brachten talloze nummers uit het rijke New Orleans repertoire ten gehore zoals Beale Street Blues, Honky Tonk Town ( met een knipoog naar de Honky Tonk Jazz Club in Dendermonde), Linger A While, Irving Berlin's Alexander's Ragtime Band, Alice Blue Gown and het zelden gehoorde Second Line.
Deze Cotton City Jazz Band speelt de New Orleans music in zijn puurste vorm, geen rare fratsen of effecten; een genoegen om naar te luisteren. Ze weten die typische New Orleans sound te creëren, ontspannen muziek, met een licht dansend ritme, zo typerend voor de muziek die in de jaren twintig in New Orleans gespeeld werd. Deze band weet, uit de eerste hand, hoe deze muziek hoort te klinken - in de jaren zeventig maakten ze verschillende plaatopnamen met legendarische New Orleans muzikanten als Percy Humphrey, Don Ewell, banjoïst Emmanuel Sayles en Alton Purnell om er een paar te noemen. Romain Vandriessche herinnerde in zijn introductie van het nummer Bogalousa Strut hun ontmoeting met Andrew Morgan, rietspeler en zanger, die te horen is op de Sam Morgan's Jazz Band opnamen voor Columbia uit 1927.
Deze band pretendeert expert te zijn in het spelen van spirituals en dat maakten ze waar met een schitterende ingetogen versie van Just A Closer Walk With Thee, dat langzaam begon en meer uptempo eindigde. Geweldig !!

Sommige bands lijken contrasten. Neem nu deze Cotton City Jazz Band en Archie Shepp, die de avond daarvoor op ditzelfde podium optrad: beide maken muziek die zijn oorsprong vindt in de Mississippi delta.
