Jazz on a Summer's Day

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
Since a week I have the great Jazz On A Summer's Day film, made by Bert Stern in my collection. This film is released by Charly Records and contains, except a registration from the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival, also some extras like an illuminating documentary providing an insight into the making of the film and the Newport Jazz Festival and a CD with the film soundtrack.
This film is more then only a registration of the four festival day in Newport July 1958, that was first held in 1954. It contains, except concerts from artists like Thelonious Monk, Gerry Mulligan and Art Farmer, Sonny Stitt and Sal Salvador, good old Satchmo and Mahalia Jackson also shots from the America's Cup Yacht trials, the lovely city of Newport and close-ups of the audience. For Dutch people I love to compare it with Bert Haanstra's film Alleman. I enjoyed the film during the last weekend and love to share with you one of the highlights in the film, the performance of Anita O'Day.
In the film she is dressed as a lady from a glossy magazine, with high-heeled shoes and white gloves and with a beautiful head she looks like a vamp; too Haute to Handle. She starts her performance with an a-cappella version in three distinct tempos of Sweet Georgia Brown, starting with the accompany by a tom-tom only, played by her husband John Poole. The other two trio members are Jimmy Jones on piano and Whitey Mitchell at the bass. I posted a fragment of this tune as a link in a previous contribution, titled Anita O' Day due to the fact that she passed away in November 2006.
The second tune, Tea For Two, is also great. I believe you should hear her scatting it and see her performing. I found a fragment of it. Please enjoy it

Well, she was really a great singer. She was born as Anita Belle Colton in Chicago,
Illinois October 1919, and she became one of the greatest bebop singers in jazz. She became the regular singer in the Chicago Planet Mars venue and the Off Beat Club and became the vocalist in Gene Krupa's Orchestra, and later too in Woody Herman's and Stan Kenton's band. She became a sought after bebop vocalist and during the 1960s she played with Carl Tjader and got a drugs habit. She wrote about that in an autobiography titled High Times, Hard Times. I guess I should read that book. In November 2006 she passed away as an old lady, 85 years old.
A great singer in a great documentary with a lot of great jazz musicians like
Bob Brookmeyer and Thelonious Monk, two of my previous blog-subjects. Try to find a copy of this great DVD !

Today I received a message from Blue Note that the unreleased July 1958 concert by Horace Silver Live At Newport now has been issued on CD. Great news. Love to have that: keepswinging@live.nl

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
