I found this quote by Claudio Roditi, the Brazilian trumpet player on the album cover of a new record by Triplicate, entitled Three and one. Trumpet player Ellister Van Der Molen once met Roditi and his music inspired her. This quote from Claudio Roditi, he is one of my favorites too, made me anxious to listen to the music on the album and I liked it .............

Triplicate isn't about trends or fashions, but is, instead, driven by pure musicianship and a deep love for jazz music. A love that connects tradition with a freshness that is very much rooted in the present.

The drumless trio Triplicate, for their debut album enlarged with Eric Ineke on drums, features Ellister Van Der Molen on trumpet and flugelhorn, Bob Wijnen at the piano and Johnny Daly on double bass. Their first album is entitled Three and one, referring, of course, to their trio form with guest Eric Ineke but also to the Thad Jones composition Three And One orginally recorded by the Jones Brothers ( ( Thad - Hank - Eddie and Elvin) in 1958.

Ellister Van Der Molen is born March 1977 and raised into a music loving family, as she describes it at her website. Her talents to make music attracked attention and she became a student at the preparatory-department for young talented children of the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, like another Dutch jazz musicians Rik Mol, who, by accident, alo became a jazz trumpet player. In 2000 she graduated and started to play in various jazz bands, from the Jimmy Lunceford Legacy Orchestra, Dim Kesber and Friends, the all-girl band Alice in Dixieland ( despite the name suggests, this ladies-band plays swing, bebop and mainstream jazz), Leticia y su Rumbadama ( an all-women salsa band) and the New Generation Big Band, which plays hiphop and funky rhythms. Together with reeds player David Lukács she cooperated in their own quintet, the David Lukács - Ellister Van Der Molen Quintet. She likes to perform in a trio, a setting she learned to enjoy while she was still at the conservatory. Music is communication, she explains. Playing just the three of us allows us to react on one another right away. We can even all look each other in the eyes. Creativity is the thing! Her Ellister Three features herself on flugelhorn, Vincent Koning (guitar) and Uli Glaszmann (bass). Triplicate is her second trio, featuring trumpet, piano and double bass. The trio loves to dig into jazz treasures from the past - "something from all the different styles and moods that go to make up the rich tapestry that is jazz music" - music as played by great names like bebop piano player Tadd Dameron or tenor saxophonist, but also a great composer and arranger Benny Golson. who hopes to celebrate his 82nd birthday later this week.
Piano player Bob Wijnen, born in 1971, studied at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague too, played in bands like the Janssen 4, a blend from Jazz, Classical, Popular, World and Folk music. Bass player Johnny Daly is from Ireland and plays in Equinox, a group which surprised with their debut album Equinox. Eric Ineke, who is active in the Dutch jazz scene since the 1960s, don't needs further introduction, I think. He is the regular accompanist in the Rein De Graaff Trio since the early 1970s and has his own group: The Eric Ineke's JazzXpress.
He is also, together with Marius Beets, part of the David Liebman Trio. He teaches percussion at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and at the Koorenhuis. The album of Triplicate Three and one, contains almost a dozen tracks, eight standards and three own compositions by trumpet player Ellister Van Der Molen - The first one, with the puzzling name TBV, strikes the right chord - uptempo hard bop - music that fascinates me. Ellister told me that TBV is just what it is: the Dutch abbrevation for ten behoeve van, which means "in behalf of", the work title for the song and the album. Ellister plays flugelhorn in tunes like the standard Three and one, which opens with a drum intro by nester Eric Ineke or in ballads like Gnid, in 1956 recorded by the Tadd Dameron Quartet featuring a young John Coltrane; Bud Powell’s I'll Keep Loving You or in Kenny Wheeler's Everybody's Song But My Own. I really liked Seven Steps to Heaven, played by Ellister on a muted trumpet, originally composed by Victor Feldman, but, of course, remembered by the Miles Davis 1963 recordings - Great to hear this young ambitious group plays such a great tune.

Triplicate released this album at a concert at Pavlov - The Hague December 2010. Enjoy a fragment in which the band plays its opening tune TBV.

The trio labels its style as chamber jazz, and maybe that's true, as they normally play without a drummer, but this album, featuring Eric Ineke on drums, is much more then that. On the cover they describe their music as a rich homage to the ongoing story of what jazz music was and what it still can be, fuelled by improvisations, that vary from delicate to adventurous. A great debut album of this young group, that knows its roots, not swayed by the issues of the day. The result is "Triplicate", a group dedicated to the roots of jazz music while constantly looking to the future.

The young Dutch group Triplicate released last month its debut album in Pavlov Bar and Restaurant in The Hague, entitled Three and one. The trio, featuring trumpet player Ellister Van Der Molen, pianist Bob Wijnen and double bass player Johnny Dale was enlarged with drummer and nester of the Dutch jazzscene Eric Ineke. Ik vond dit citaat in het cd-hoesje van de debuutplaat van Triplicate - Three and one; een uitspraak van Claudio Roditi, de Braziliaanse trompettist, die Ellister van der Molen, de trompettist van het trio, inspireerde en die ze ooit tijdens een concert ontmoette. Deze uitspraak van Claudio Roditi, die ik ook graag mag horen spelen, maakte mij nieuwsgierig naar de muziek op deze plaat .........

Het drumloze trio Triplicate, voor haar debuutalbum Three and one uitgebreid met slagwerker Eric Ineke, bestaat uit Ellister van der Molen op trompet en bugel, Bob Wijnen aan de piano en Johnny Daly op bas. Hun eerste plaat is getiteld Three and One, dat, uiteraard, verwijst naar het trio met gastspeler Eric Ineke maar ook naar de gelijknamige Thad Jones compositie, dat ook op de plaat terug te vinden is, oorspronkelijk op plaat gezet door The Jones Brothers ( Thad - Hank - Eddie en Elvin) in 1958.

Ellister van der Molen werd geboren in maart 1977 en groeide op in een muzikaal gezin, a music loving family, zoals ze het op haar website omschrijft. Doordat men haar ontluikend muzikaal talent onderkende, mocht ze naar de vooropleiding van het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag, de school voor Jong Talent, waar bijvoorbeeld ook, toeval of geen toeval, trompettist Rik Mol, die nu naam maakt in de Nederlandse jazzscene, zijn opleiding kreeg.
In 2000 studeerde ze af en begon in allerlei bands te spelen - van het Jimmy Lunceford Legacy Orchestra, Dim Kesber and Friends, het "damesorkest" Alice in Dixieland ( ondanks wat haar naam suggereert, speelt de groep voornamelijk swing, bebop en mainstream jazz), Leticia y su Rumbadama ( een salsa band bestaande uit vrouwen) en de New Generation Big Band, die zich meer richt op de moderne bigbandmuziek met hiphop en funky ritmen. Samen met klarinettist en saxofonist David Lukács richtte ze een eigen kwintet op, het David Lukács - Ellister van der Molen Quintet. Ze houdt ervan om in trio's te spelen, een vorm, die haar al fascineerde toen ze nog op het conservatorium zat. Music is communication (= Muziek is communicatie), legt ze uit. Haar eigen Ellister Three bestaat uit haarzelf op bugel, Vincent Koning op gitaar en Uli Glaszmann op bas. Triplicate is weer een ander trio, met een andere bezetting, bestaande uit trompet, piano en bas. Triplicate houdt ervan om in het verleden op zoek te gaan naar die vergeten nummers, schatten uit het rijke jazzverleden; "something from all the different styles and moods that go to make up the rich tapestry that is jazz music" (= Iets uit allerlei invloeden en stijlen, die samen de jazzmuziek gevormd hebben). De muziek die ze spelen komt van grote musici als bebop pianist Tadd Dameron of tenorsaxofonist, maar bovenal componist en arrangeur Benny Golson, die volgende week 82 hoopt te worden.
Pianist Bob Wijnen, geboren in 1971, studeerde eveneens aan het Koninklijk Haags Conservatorium en speelt in bands als The Janssen 4, (een mix van Jazz, klassieke- en popmuziek, wereld- en volksmuziek. Bassist Johnny Daly komt oorspronkelijk uit Ierland en is hier blijven hangen; hij speelt o.a. in Equinox, de groep die verraste met haar gelijknamige debuutalbum. Eric Ineke, die al vanaf eind jaren zestig meedraait in de Nederlandse Jazzscene, behoeft eigenlijk geen introductie meer. Hij is de vaste slagwerker van het Rein de Graaff Trio sinds begin jaren zeventig en heeft een eigen groep: Eric Ineke's JazzXpress. Verder heeft hij al drie cd's opgenomen met het David Liebman Trio.
Hij is, behalve actief op slagwerk, ook leraar slagwerk op het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Den Haag en het Koorenhuis. Het album Triplicate - Three and one, bevat elf nummers, acht standards en drie eigen composities van trompettist Ellister van der Molen -
Het eerste nummer, met de wat raadselachtige titel TBV ( dat gewoon voor de afkorting ten behoeve van staat, de "werktitel" voor de cd) raakt meteen de juiste snaar als je't mij vraagt - uptempo hard bop - muziek waar je me altijd voor wakker kunt maken. Ellister speelt bugel in de langzamere nummers als Three And One, dat opent met nestor Eric Ineke op slagwerk en in ballads zoals Gnid ( in 1956 opgenomen door het Tadd Dameron Quartet met een nog jonge John Coltrane), Bud Powell’s I'll Keep Loving You of het Kenny Wheeler nummer Everybody's Song But My Own. Het nummer Seven Steps to Heaven verraste me, gecomponeerd door Victor Feldman, maar door iedereen geassocieerd met de Miles Davis opnamen uit 1963 - Heerlijk om het nummer nu eens hier, met Ellister van der Molen op gestopte trompet, door deze ambitieuze groep te horen spelen.

Triplicate bracht het album Three and one uit tijdens een concert in Pavlov in december 2010. Luister maar eens naar een fragment van dat concert, het openingsnummer, dat speciaal "ten behoeve van" deze plaat geschreven werd - TBV:

Het trio zegt op haar website dat men de stijl van het drumloze trio wellicht als kamermuziek zal bestempelen, een modewoord, dat me doet denken aan de muziek van het Modern Jazz Quartet, dat ik onlangs ook al tegenkwam bij Jesse van Ruller, en misschien is dat ook wel zo, maar hun debuut album, met gastdrummer Eric Ineke, is zeker meer dan dat. Op de hoes omschrijven ze hun muziek als een rijk eerbetoon aan de zich steeds veranderende jazz, zoals het was en zoals het nog steeds kan zijn, dat zich steeds blijft ontwikkelen dankzij de improvisatie, die varieert van verfijnd tot gedurfd.

Een mooi debuutalbum van een jonge groep, niet geleid door de waan van de dag, maar weet wat het met de jazz wil. Het resultaat Three and one mag er zijn - een eerbetoon aan de wortels van de jazz maar met beide benen in het heden.

Jazz hoort thuis in kleine ( rokerige?) clubs, gespeeld door geïnspireerde musici, die door naar elkaar te luisteren en in te spelen op wat de ander doet, op het podium tot een soort balans weten te komen; een evenwicht tussen melodic lyricism with harmonic adventurousness, dynamic subtlety with rhythmic fire ... (= lyrische melodieën met gewaagde harmonieën, subtiele elementen en ritmische uitbarstingen) - las ik in een omschrijving. Equinox is zo’n groep, die ontstaan is door veel en vaak samen te spelen: Elke zondag en dinsdag, tijdens het winterseizoen, zijn ze te beluisteren in Bar-Restaurant Pavlov in Den Haag. Onlangs kwam hun eerste album uit: Equinox “Here & Now.
Vier muzikanten: drie Amerikanen en één Ier – nu allemaal hier neergestreken. Chris Johansen speelt de tenorsax en komt oorspronkelijk uit Seattle, waar hij aan het New England Conservatorium studeerde. Hij verhuisde in 2003 naar Nederland.

Dan Nicholas - A.J. Davis

Dan Nicholas speelt gitaar en komt oorspronkelijk uit New York. Hij speelde daar o.a. met George Braithwaite, Leroy Williams en Jimmy Lovelace. George Braithwaite trad vijftig jaar geleden voor het eerst op in Nederland, als lid van het American Jazz Sextet in het voorprogramma van het concert van het Jay Jay Johnson Quintet in het Concertgebouw ( Amsterdam) in augustus 1957. Jazzkenners zullen George herinneren als George Braith; aan zijn schitterende Blue Note platen uit de jaren zestig. Hij speelt nog steeds op zijn zelfontworpen Braitophone, een “dubbelsaxofoon” en zijn Bobtronics, een soort synthesizer.

Johnny Daly, de bassist, komt uit Ierland en groeide op in Dublin. Hij verhuisde naar ons land om aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag muziek te studeren ( bij o.a. Hein Van de Geyn) Hij speelde met Eric Ineke, slagwerker en veertig jaar in het vak, die onlangs een nieuwe plaat uitbracht met zijn groep: Eric Ineke’s JazzXpress: Xpressions in Time.

A.J. Davis - Johnny Daly

A.J. Davis, slagwerker, kwam twee jaar geleden in Nederland wonen; hij speelde in Florida en Californië in bluesbands.

Equinox
De plaat, Here & Now, bevat tien nummers, de meest titels gecomponeerd door musici als Ornette Coleman, Thelonious Monk en Charles Mingus: Bird Food, van Coleman, is een titel die refereert aan de invloeden van Charlie Parker, die in de compositie hoorbaar zijn en The Lotus Blossom, een Billy Strayhorn compositie, waarvan de versie van Dave Frishberg uit de jaren zeventig steeds weer door mijn hoofd klinkt.
Een ander nummer, dat fascineert, is Charles Mingus’ Peggy’s Blue Skylight, een nummer dat hij speelde tijdens het Town Hall concert in 1962 en uitgebracht werd door Blue Note. Maaar de een echte verrassing was voor mij het nummer Brilliant Corners, één van de moeilijkst te spelen nummers die Thelonious Monk componeerde, met een moeilijk te bevatten ritmisch patroon en een chorus, op dubbele snelheid. Toen Monk dit nummer opnam, met zijn kwintet (met niet de minsten in de bezetting: Max Roach, Oscar Pettiford en Sonny Rollins), moest het meer dan 25 keer gespeeld worden en nog stond het niet goed op tape. De “misser” van Oscar Pettiford is al een eigen blog waard, maar als je het verhaal eerder wilt horen dan mail je me maar. Uiteindelijk werd met knip en plakwerk toch nog een acceptabele uitvoering in de groef geperst. Een uitdaging dus voor Equinox, dat van veel moed getuigt en …….. het is ze prima gelukt - Een kunstwerkje!
Johnny Daly - Chris Johansen
In Keepers of the Flame en Brighter Shores, laat Dan Nicholas zien, dat hij, behalve een vaardig gitarist, ook een goed componist is; twee eigen composities met mooi saxofoonwerk en eigen gitaarspel. Ook Johnny Dale schreef een compositie voor deze plaat: Same Time Tomorrow.
Equinox
Een mooi debuutalbum van deze groep; een uitgebalanceerde hardbopplaat, waarnaar de naam Equinox refereert. Equinox is immers die periode in het jaar waarin de nacht en de dag even lang duren? En werd Equinox als compositie ook niet door John Coltrane in 1960 op de plaat gezet? Voor mij onderstreept het weer eens dat hardbop, de muziekstroom die vijftig jaar geleden modern was, nog steeds fris en ongedateerd klinkt en dat is in dit geval zeker een verdienste van deze band, waar we vast en zeker nog meer van zullen horen. Hard bop is still alive!

Jazz ought to be played in small clubs with inspired musicians, who love to listen to each other and anticipate to the music performed on stage. Equinox is such a group born on the band-stand. It performs during the winter season each Sunday and Tuesday at the Bar-Restaurant Pavlov in The Hague. This band recently released its first album, titled: Equinox “Here & Now. “
Four musicians: Three Americans and one Irishman – all four living in Holland now for years: Chris Johansen plays the tenor saxophone and was born and raised in Seattle. He studied saxophone at the New England Conservatory and moved to The Netherlands in 2003.

Dan Nicholas - A.J. Davis

Dan Nicholas plays the guitar and is originally from New York City. He performed in that city with musicians like George Braithwaite, Leroy Williams and Jimmy Lovelace. George Braithwaite, who visited The Netherlands more then fifty years ago for the very first time, as a member of the American Jazz Sextet as the opener of the Jay Jay Johnson Quintet concert at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam (August 1957), became known as George Braith, who made some great Blue Note recordings during the 1960s. He is still active playing his self-made Braitophone, a double saxophone and his Boptronics, a kind of synthesizer.

Johnny Daly, the bass man is from Ireland and was raised in Dublin. He moved to the Netherlands to follow a study at the Koninklijk Conservatorium ( = Royal Conservatory ) of The Hague. He played with Eric Ineke, the well known Dutch drummer, 40 years in music, who recently released a great album with his band Eric Ineke’s JazzXpress: Xpressions in Time.

A.J. Davis - Johnny Daly
A.J. Davis, drummer, came to The Netherlands two years ago. He played in several blues bands in and around Tallahassee, Florida and Los Angeles, Ca.

Equinox
The album, Here & Now, contains 10 tracks, most standards composed by musicians like Ornette Coleman: Bird Food, a title that refers to the influences by Parker you can hear in this 1959 tune and Lotus Blossom, a Billy Strayhorn composition, which reminds me always to a Dave Frishberg recording I have in my collection for years. I was fascinated by two other standards: Peggy’s Blue Skylight, a tune released on Charles Mingus 1962 Town Hall concert recorded for Blue Note and a great version of Brilliant Corners, one of the most difficult and tricky Thelonious Monk compositions, with hard to play rhythmic patterns and double speed choruses. When this tune was recorded by the Thelonious Monk Quintet ( with names like Max Roach, Oscar Pettiford and Sonny Rollins) for the very first time for Riverside, it needed more then 25 takes to wax it by Monk’s Quintet, October 1956. And if you never have heard about Oscar Pettiford’s practical joke on this session, contact me and I'll tell you. The finally released tune by Monk was compiled from several takes, so it was a great challenge for Equinox to have this tune on their first album. ......... and they succeeded - what a great tune! A piece of art!

In Keepers of the Flame and Brighter Shores, Dan Nicholas shows that he is a skilled hard bop composer and accompanist below Chris Johansen’s solo on the tenor sax and himself at the guitar. And Same Time Tomorrow, a Johnny Daly composition, learns that the band is a balanced unity.
Equinox

A great debut album of this band, which learns that hardbop, although born more then 50 years ago, still sounds fresh and undated as performed by this band, that found a perfect balance. The name of the band, Equinox, refers to that: in fact the name Equinox is the period of the year when day and night are equally of length ( and wasn’t Equinox a 1960 John Coltrane recording?). Hard bop is still alive!
