American Jazz Sextet

On the 17th of August 1957 two bands were sceduled at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam: The Jay Jay Johnson Quintet and a band of young American talents, the American Jazz Sextet. The concert started at midnight. The Jay Jay Johnson Quintet featured Jay Jay Johnson on trombone, Bobby Jaspar on tenor saxophone and flute, Tommy Flanagan at the piano, Wilbur Little on bass and Elvin Jones on drums; all musicians whose names are still known after 50 years. The second band, The American Jazz Sextet, was a band with young American jazz musicians - young talent, that toured along Europe. When you look to the names: Sal Amico trumpet - Barry Rogers trombone - George Braithwaite alto saxophone - Roland Ashby piano - Mike Fels bass and Jimmy Wormworth drums only George Braith ( his full name is Braithwaite) and drummer Jimmy Wormworth are remembered after all those years. Jimmy Wormworth played in 1956 and 1957 in Europe and this concert is one of his gigs I guess. He returned to the USA in February 1958 and played with Nellie Lutcher , recorded with Lou Donaldson and Lambert, Hendricks & Ross. My information stops in 1960 as Leonard Feather's New Edition of the Encyclopedia of Jazz stops in 1959. Leonard Feather labels him as the most promising young drummer on the New York scene.
In some previous blogs I wrote about George Braith, who fascinated me with his excellent Blue Note sides. He is still active in music and developed the braithophone, a double horned saxophone and the boptronics, a kind of syntesizer. I'm listening now to one of his latest CDs titled Bip Bop Bam on Excellence Records. I will review some of his CDs later. George told me that he remembered that concert in Amsterdam, now 50 years ago. He was a young man, aged 18 years old, who wanted to make a career in music. He asked me if there were any pictures or reviews left from that concert. I told him that I only know that Peter Verbruggen, a photographer, was present during the concert and made, at least one, picture from the Jay Jay Johnson set.
Maybe someone of you can help finding announcements, reviews or pictures from that concert, held in the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam on the 17th of August 1957. Please send your commends and additions to keepswinging@live.nl

Het concert begon om middernacht. Het Jay Jay Johnson Quintet bestond uit Jay Jay Johnson op trombone, Bobby Jaspar op tenorsax en fluit, Tommy Flanagan achter de piano, Wilbur Little op bas en Elvin Jones op drums; allemaal musici, waarvan we de namen na vijftig jaar nog steeds kennen. De tweede band, waarschijnlijk speelden ze in de eerste set, The American Jazz Sextet, bestond uit jonge muzikanten, die rondtrokken door Europa. Als je de bezetting doorleest: Sal Amico trompet - Barry Rogers trombone - George Braithwaite altsax - Roland Ashby piano - Mike Fels bas en Jimmy Wormworth drums, dan blijven alleen de namen van George Braith ( voluit is zijn achternaam Braithwaite) en slagwerker Jimmy Wormworth bovendrijven. Jimmy Wormworth speelde in 1956 en 1957 veel in Europe (en dit concert is daar een bewijs van). Hij keerde terug naar de VS om te gaan spelen met Nellie Lutcher, nam platen op met Lou Donaldson en Lambert, Hendricks & Ross. Dan stopt mijn informatie, aangezien The New Edition of the Encyclopedia of Jazz van Leonard Feather in 1960 verscheen. Feather noemt hem overigens The most promising young drummer on the New York scene. ( De meest belovende jonge slagwerker uit de New Yorkse jazzscene )
In een aantal eerdere bijdragen aan deze Keep Swinging weblog schreef ik al uitgebreid over George Braith, waarvan vooral zijn Blue Note opnamen me fascineren. Hij is nog steeds actief in de muziek en ontwikkelde de Braithophone, een instrument met een dubbele saxofoonhoorn en de Boptronics, een soort syntesizer. Op dit moment luister ik naar één van zijn laatste producties, getiteld Bip Bop Bam op Excellence Records. Ik zal deze plaat later een keer bespreken. George vertelde me dat hij het optreden in Amsterdam, na vijftig jaar, nog goed herinnert. Hij was toen 18 jaar ( de andere musici waren ook rond die leeftijd) en wilde graag verder in de muziek. Hij vroeg me of er nog foto's waren van dit optreden of recenties in kranten. Ik heb hem verteld, dat ik alleen één foto ken, gemaakt door fotograaf Peter Verbruggen van Jay Jay Johnson; klaarblijkelijk heeft hij in ieder geval het concert bijgewoond. Misschien dat er in zijn archief nog meer foto's te vinden zijn.
