Keep (it) Swinging: Betty Boop's Dizzy Dishes

One of the most popular animated films for me are the Betty Boop cartoons, most of you will know. Betty Boop was born as a kind of clone of a typically 1920s flapper girl, like Helen Kane. I made a contribution about her role in Betty Boop Versus Helen Kane. Hundreds of animated cartoons were made in which Betty Boop appeared, most in her own series Betty Boop cartoons. The last Betty Boop Cartoon ( I'm not talking now about the awfully 1985 and 1989 remakes that are sold by Hears' Entertainment Inc.; these two, The Romance of Betty Boop and Betty Boop Hollywood Mystery were even labeled as Classic Edition. What a shame !!) was released in August 1939, Yip Yip Yippy. Although labeled as a Betty Boop cartoon she's not in it - her last appearance was in Rhythm Of The Reservation, a month earlier.

Betty also appeared as a guest in numerous other cartoons and when she first was used, she played a female entertainer opposite Bimbo. Bimbo was designed by Max Fleischer as a reaction on Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse. He re-shaped the dog Fitz, who played opposite the 1920s Fleischer-star Ko-Ko, the clown, part of the Out Of The Inkwell cartoons to a more tougher, cigar-chewing, somewhat lecherous, piano-playng jazz hound Bimbo. Max Fleischer introduced him in the Talkartoon Dizzy Dishes, but even Bimbo's big feet weren't filling Mickey's shoes, Richard Fleischer explains in his book Out Of The Inkwell. So Max Fleischer decided to make a character opposite Bimbo. As Bimbo was a dog, Fleischer shaped a character half dog, half human female. This still nameless creations was gross, ugly, with an enorous, bouncy behind, but saucer-liked eyes and great feminine legs .......

This character, still nameless, appeared for the first time in Dizzy Dishes, released the 9th of August 1930. The cartoon itself is not very exciting and the story is meagre. The Fleischer jokes are not yet at their best. This film is only interesting because of Betty's first appearance. The film is in a cabaret with customers who love to have a good meal and love to see the girls dancing and singing. The service is badly organized, so the gorilla, one of the customers, has to eat the tableware and even the furniture to the bone ( typically Fleischer humor). On stage is the character, later named as Betty Boop, singing a love song to Bimbo, the waiter, who falls in love for her. "Betty" sings: Lovin', I have to have lovin' - But when I'm having my lovin' - I have to have you ! boop-boop-a-doop. This is the first time that she uses her famous quote Boop-boop-a-doop and on the film it is beyond doubt what she means with Boop-doop-a-doop.

Let's show you Betty's first appearance in show-biz - just for historical reasons. Max Fleischer started to re-shape her, the dog snout became a little dot of a nose, the flabby mouth began to look human, and the gross figure became one of the most sexy animations from the 1930s, with a tiny waist and a very human bossom.

Eén van mijn meest populaire filmcartoons zijn, zoals je al wel zult weten, die van en met Betty Boop . Betty Boop werd geboren als een kloon van een typische jaren twintig flapper wife, een modieus gekleed "moderne" jonge vrouw, die graag uitgaat. Helen Kane lijkt model voor haar gestaan te hebben. Ik heb daar een keer uitgebreid over verteld in de bijdrage Betty Boop Versus Helen Kane. Er zijn honderden cartoons waarin Betty Boop figureert, de meeste in haar eigen serie Betty Boop cartoons. De allerlaatste in die serie Betty Boop Cartoons ( Ik laat hier de twee afschuwelijke opnieuw gemaakte filmpjes uit 1985 en 1989, nota bene als Classic Edition in 2003 op de markt gebracht ( The Romance of Betty Boop en Betty Boop Hollywood Mystery achterwege ) werd uitgebracht als Yip Yip Yippy, in augustus 1939, maar daar kwam ze zelf al niet meer in voor. Ze verscheen voor het laatst op het doek een maand daarvoor in de film Rhythm Of The Reservation.

Betty speelde als gast vele malen bij andere Fleischer cartoons. Max Fleischer, haar geestelijk vader, introduceerde haar naast Bimbo. Dit hondje was een reactie op de populariteit van Walt Disney's muis Mickey. Max Fleischer vormde zijn (animatie)hond Fitz, die een rolletje speelde naast de jaren twintig ster Ko-Ko, de clown, onderdeel van de Out Of The Inkwell cartoons, om tot de steviger, sigaren kauwende, wat hitsige, pianospelende hond Bimbo. Deze hond speelde voor het eerst in de Talkartoon Dizzy Dishes, maar even Bimbo's big feet weren't filling Mickey's shoes, (= maar zelfs Bimbo kon de concurentie met Mickey niet aan), vertelt Richard Fleischer in zijn boek Out Of The Inkwell. Max Fleischer besloot om een extra karakter naast Bimbo neer te zetten. Omdat Bimbo een soort hond werd, maakte hij een figuurtje dat half hond was, half vrouw. Deze nog steeds naamloze figuur was grof, lelijk, met een enorm achterwerk, met ogen als schoteltjes en grote vrouwelijke benen ......

Dit figuurtje deed voor het eerst mee in de film Dizzy Dishes, die uitgebracht werd op 9 augustus 1930. De cartoon zelf is niet erg opwindend en het verhaal zelfs magertjes. De beeldgrapjes van Max Fleischer zijn nog niet op hun best; eigenlijk is de film alleen interessant omdat Betty Boop hier haar debuut maakt. De film speelt zich af in een cabaret, zeg maar een soort nachtclub waar klanten willen eten en willen genieten van optredens. In de club echter is de bediening rampzalig georganiseerd en één van de klanten, een gorilla, eet van ellende maar zijn hele servies en tafel op tot op het bot (!) (typische Fleischer humor). Op het podium zingt een zangeresje, waarin we Betty Boop herkennen, haar beroemd geworden liedje ( met slogan) voor een hevig verliefd wordende Bimbo, die de rol van ober speelt. Lovin', I have to have lovin' - But when I'm having my lovin' - I have to have you ! boop-boop-a-doop. Dit is de eerste keer dat het beroemde zinnetje, dat hoort bij Betty Boop ( Boop-boop-a-doop ) gebruikt wordt en Betty windt er in dit eerste filmpje geen doekjes om wat ze met dat zinnetje bedoelt.

Graag wil ik jullie haar debuut in de show-biz laten zien - haar eerste optreden in een filmpje - alleen uit historisch oogpunt. Max Fleischer was nog niet gelukkig met haar verschijnen en begon haar te her-modeleren: de hondesnoet werd een klein neusje, de kwabbige mond kregen gestifte vrouwenlipjes en haar grove figuur kreeg een slanke taille en vrouwelijke boezem: kortom Betty werd het meest sexy tekenfilmfiguurtje uit de jaren dertig. Opgenomen in Heemstede op 4 juni 1974. Eén van de nummers werd jarenlang als herkenningsmelodie gebruikt in het populaire radioprogramma van Omroep Zeeland Een Rondje Bert om De Plaat Van De Week ( De Hit of the week?) aan te kondigen.
