Jazz should surprise you. Massimo Farao' did .... I found an album titled Massimo Farao' Trio Live At The Blue Bird, (PRJ 40001). I liked the cover and the tracklist showed all kinds of cartoon titles, like The Flinstones (sic), Pink Panther Theme and I'm Popeye The Sailor Man. Well, as you might know, I love those 1930s cartoons, so I bought it on the off-chance.
The Massimo Farao' Trio contains three musicians, Massimo Farao' at the piano, Francesco Mariella on bass and Massimo Dall'omo on drums. I'd never heard of these musicians, but searching on the internet learned me that Massimo Farao' is a sought after piano player. He accompanied Benny Golson, Archie Shepp, Gary Bartz and Red Holloway and recorded with Tony Scott, Bobby Durham, Jack McDuff, Jimmy Cobb and Jesse Davis. The music on the album is great, Massimo is a skilled hardbop piano player and a great soloist.
Everybody can name some famous "cats", like, of course, Felix The Cat, Fritz The Cat, the Aristocats ( aren't they jazz-cats playing in Paris? ), Tom and Silvester, the numerous cats in Roger Rabbit's Toontown, and not to forget the Pink Panther of course. A cat, of course, is also slang for a jazz musician, so ...... that's how the track list of this album was born: The Pink Panther Theme, Woody Woodpecker, Spiderman, Batman, Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf, Popeye and even Heidi are on the album. Wasn't Billy Strayhorn nicknamed Swee Pea?

In the liner notes Michele Mannucci explains why Massimo wanted to make an album with cartoon-music. Ill Jazz ed i cartoni animati hanno piu o meno la stessa eta. (= Jazz and cartoon music have more or less the same age.) Hanno anche un personaggio in comune: il gatto (= Both Jazz and cartoons have a common character, the cat.)

Max The Cat ( courtesy Massimo Farao')Massimo Farao' was born in Genoa in 1965, studied piano with Flavio Crivelli, a local jazz piano player, who also learned Dado Moroni to play, and played in as a young adult with the Nat Adderley Quintet. He moved to the States two years later and became the musical director of the Shawnn Monteiro Quartet with Keter Betts and Bobby Durham. In 1993 he created the Seminario Internazionale "We Love Jazz" in his hometown Genua (Italy). This album, Live At The Blue Bird was recorded August 1994 and is his third album. I leaned that he recently released another album dedicated to cartoons, titled Cartoons In Jazz. I hope to hear this album soon !!

Max The Cat ( courtesy Massimo Farao')Love to share with you a fragment of a concert I found with Archie Shepp, the legendary US saxophone player, who performed a month ago at the International Jazz Festival in Middelburg (The Netherlands). The tune played is Hope # 2 and, beside Archie Shepp and Massimo Farao' you will also recognize Wayne Dockery on bass and Bobby Durham on drums. Recorded live at the Paradiso Perduto in Venice (Italy) October 2002.

NAOMI'S JAZZ QUARTET:
The Naomi's Jazz Quartet will perform Sunday afternoon the 1st of June 2008 at the Swinging Scheveningen event, which takes place next weekend. The Naomi's Jazz Quartet, featuring as special guest vocalist Stijn Stroeve, contains Naomi Adriaansz. on sax, Mark Reijnen at the piano, Richard Frijters on bass and Jeroen Hoogveldt on drums. The concerts take place at the boulevard of Scheveningen, the most swinging seaside resort on the Dutch coast. More info at their website.

Het Massimo Farao' Trio bestaat uit Massimo Farao' aan de piano, Francesco Mariella op bas en Massimo Dall'omo op slagwerk. Ik had, eerlijk gezegd, nog nooit van deze mannen gehoord, maar een kleine zoektocht op internet leerde me dat Massimo Farao' een veel gevraagd begeleider is van grote Amerikaanse musici als Benny Golson, Archie Shepp, Gary Bartz en Red Holloway en opnamen maakte met Tony Scott, Bobby Durham, Jack McDuff, Jimmy Cobb en Jesse Davis. Max The Cat ( Massimo Farao')Massimo Farao' werd geboren in Genua in 1965, en leerde pianospelen van de de jazzpianist Flavio Crivelli, nestor en leermeester van meer jazzpianisten in en rondom Genua, zoals Dado Moroni. Massimo speelde als jong volwassene al mee met het Nat Adderley Quintet. Twee jaar later verhuisde hij naar de Verenigde Staten waar hij muzikaal leider werd van het Shawnn Monteiro Quartet met Keter Betts en Bobby Durham. In 1993 richtte hij in zijn geboortestad Genua het Seminario Internazionale "We Love Jazz" op. Dit album, Live At The Blue Bird werd in augustus 1994 opgenomen en is Massimo's derde plaat. Ik ontdekte dat Massimo Farao' onlangs weer een CD opgenomen heeft die gewijd is aan cartoonmuziek, getiteld Cartoons In Jazz. Ik hoop deze plaat binnenkort ook eens te kunnen beluisteren.

Het nummer dat hij speelt is Hope # 2 en behalve Archie Shepp herken je ook Massimo Farao' aan de piano, Wayne Dockery op bas en Bobby Durham op slagwerk. De opnamen vonden plaats in Venetië in de Paradiso Perduto oktober 2002.
