Mickey Mouse - Thru The Mirror

On the 30 May 1936, seventy-one years ago the film Thru The Mirror made by the Walt Disney studios, with Mickey Mouse as the leading figure, was released in the US. Mickey celebrated that year her eighth birthday, as she was acting for the very first time in Steamboat Willie. Her originator was Ub Iwerks, who also created Oswald The Rabbit. The Thru The Mirror cartoon was narrated by Dick Lundy, Bob Wickersham and Hardie Gramatky.
The story is one of those typically 1930s Walt Disney cartoons - written for little children but enough comical action to please grown-ups too. In the cartoon, that is based on the story Alice Through The Looking Glass, Mickey has a dream and steps through the mirror. She comes in a fantasy world where ordinary things, like telephones and nutcrackers can move.
There are some great scenes where she dances in a show with playing cards. The king of hearts gets jealous, so she has to fight with him. It is an amusing and well drawn cartoon.
For me Mickey Mouse was not the most popular Disney figure - I loved Donald and his cousin Gus and Goofy., that crazy dog. We had the Donald Duck magazine for years, still a popular magazine , although nowadays a lot of magazines are released special for kids. I remember, that, when I was a kid Disney's cartoons ( in black and white of course) were on television; something nowadays not very usual. Maybe they films are to slow or to old fashioned and I think that the subjects are not interesting for older children.The music used for this cartoon is originally a classical tune from Haydn I believe. I found a fragment of this 71 years old cartoon, the quality is very moderate, where modern music, made by 46 + 2 has been added. Enjoy the fragment.

Op 30 Mei 1936, 71 jaar geleden, kwan de korte tekenfilm Thru The Mirror, een klassieker gemaakt door de Walt Disney studio in premiere, met Mickey Mouse in de hoofdrol. Mickey vierde dat jaar haar achtste verjaardag, want ze was geboren op de tekentafel voor haar eerste film Steamboat Willie uit 1928. Haar geestelijk vader was Ub Iwerks, die ook verantwoordelijk was voor zijn schepping Oswald The Rabbit. De Thru The Mirror cartoon echter werd getekend door Dick Lundy, Bob Wickersham en Hardie Gramatky.
Het verhaal is dat van een typische Walt Disney cartoon uit de jaren dertig. gemaakt voor kinderen, maar met genoeg komische effecten en dubbele bodems om het ook voor volwassenen aantrekkelijk te maken. In de tekenfilm, die gemaakt is naar het boek : Alice - Through The Looking Glass, heeft Mickey een droom en stapt door de spiegel haar droomwereld binnen - een wereld waar gewone dingen als een telefoon en een notenkraker plotseling leven.
De hele film is eigenlijk een aaneenschakeling van revueachtige scenes, waarbij Mickey danst met allerlei voorwrpen zoals een spel kaarten. De Harten Heer wordt op een gegeven moment jaloers wat leidt tot een gevecht. De tekenfilm is amusant en schitterend vormgegeven.
Voor mezelf is Mickey Mouse nooit zo'n populaire figuur geweest. Ik had meer voeling met Donald Duck en zijn neef Guus Geluk en met Goofy, die gekke hond. Thuis hadden we jarenlang de Donald Duck; nog steeds een populair tijdschrift voor kinderen al moet Donald tegenwoordig concureren met tientallen andere bladen voor kinderen. Ik herinner me, dat, toen ik kind was, regelmatig Walt Disney filmpjes ( in zwart-wit) op de TV te zien waren - tegenwoordig zie je ze nauwelijk meer op het scherm. Zijn ze te langzaam en te ouderwets geworden? Wel denk ik dat de thema's iets oudere kinderen niet meer aanspreken. De muziek bij de originele film is een klassiek thema van Haydn geloof ik - Ik vond een fragment van deze ruim zeventig jaar oude cartoon, in slechte kwaliteit, waarbij moderne muziek, gemaakt door 46 + 2 toegevoegd is.

The Mickey Mouse ( and other Disney) cartoons have been digital remastered and released on DVD is a perfect quality. Try to find yourself a copy !!

De Mickey Mouse ( en andere Disney) cartoons zijn tegenwoordig allemaal digitaal gerestaureerd en in perfecte kwaliteit op DVD te koop. Probeer maar eens zo'n copie te pakken te krijgen.
