Ascenseur pour l'échafaud

Fifty years ago, on the 4th and 5th of December 1957, Miles Davis recorded the sound track for the film Ascenseur pour L'échafaud. This film made by Louis Malle, became one of the most famous French films, known to the general public thanks to the great soundtrack played by Miles Davis.

Miles Davis was invited for a three-week tour through Europe. He performed in five concerts with an European Quintet featuring Miles Davis on trumpet, Barney Wilen on tenor saxophone, René Urtreger at the piano, Pierre Michelot on bass and Kenny Clarke drums. The French producer Marcel Romano wanted to make a short film of a rehearsing session with Miles Davis, but this idea was rejected. Then he heard about the new film, produced by Louis Malle, who was interested in the music of Miles Davis too, and the idea was born.

Miles Davis was asked if he wanted to make the sound track for that film after he was informed about the cast, the story and the plot. I agreed to do it and it was a great learning experience, because I had never written a music score for a film before. (Miles Davis in his autobiography Miles.). While on tour through Europe he wrote down some ideas for the music and during a one week gig at the Club St. Germain in Paris he had a piano in his hotel room to compose the music. French journalist were rather critical and piqued due to the fact that Miles didn't announce his music on stage. .... a lot of French critics got mad when I couldn't talk from the bandstand and introduce tunes like everyone else did, because I thought the music spoke for itself. They thought I was arrogant and snubbing them. They were used to all those black musicians who came over there grinning and scratching up on stage.

On the 4th and 5th of December 1957 Miles Davis went to the Poste Parisien studios and played with his quintet, while Louis Malle projected the scenes of the film. They played very concentrated and in four hours the recording session had been finished.

The film was released in French as Ascenseur pour L'Échafaud, in England as Lift to the Scaffold, in the US as Frantic and in The Netherlands just as Lift naar 't Schavot.

Vijftig jaar geleden, op 4 en 5 december 1957, nam Miles Davis de muziek op voor de film Ascenseur pour L'échafaud. Deze film van de jonge regisseur Louis Malle, zou één van de beroemdste Franse films worden, bij het grote publiek vooral bekend vanwege de muziek.

Miles Davis was uitgenodigd voor een tournee van drie weken door Europa. Hij speelde vijf concerten met zijn Europese kwintet bestaande uit Miles Davis op trompet, Barney Wilen op tenorsax, René Urtreger aan de piano, Piere Michelot op bas en Kenny Clarke op slagwerk. De Franse producer Marcel Romano had in zijn achterhoofd het idee om een film te maken met Miles Davis, terwijl ze aan het oefenen waren, maar dat kwam er niet van. Toen hij over de nieuwe film van Louis Malle hoorde, ook een fan van Miles muziek, was het idee geboren. Miles Davis werd gevraagd of hij de muziek bij de film wilde maken, nadat hem het verhaal in de film verteld was en wie er in meespeelden en zo. De film werd in 1958 uitgebracht in Frankrijk als Ascenseur pour l'échafaud, in Engeland als Lift to the Scaffold, in de Verenigde Staten als Frantic en in Nederland als Lift naar 't Schavot.

Tenslotte wil ik nog een foto-serie laten zien met beelden uit Miles Davis' muzikale carriere, met de muziek van de Ascenseur pour l'échafaud op de achtergrond.

Een paar dagen nadat Miles Davis de muziek voor de film had opgenomen trad hij op 8 december 1957 in het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
