Rollins Come Back

Some weeks ago I found a letter in my archive dated the 6th of June 1972 sent by Fred "Cigar" Canté. During the 1960s and the decades to follow Fred Canté was very active into the Amsterdam jazz scene, as jazz publicist and discographer. He was a great admirer of the music made by Sonny Rollins and Thelonious Monk and wrote a Thelonious Monk discography in cooperation with Leen Bijl.

He got his nickname Cigar because he loved to smoke cigars and in the early 1960s he was involved with an advertisement campaigns for the Dutch cigarettes brands Caballero and Brandaris shag, full-strenght tobacco to roll your own cigarettes.

I remember that I wrote him because he made an appeal to Sonny Rollins to start playing again. Between August 1959 and November 1961 Sonny Rollins had retired from music, due to a poor health and a feeling that he could do better ( The story tells, that he practiced his tenor playing on the Williamsburg Bridge in New York), but between September 1969 and November 1971 Sonny Rollins abandoned music again. In the Jazzwereld (number 38 April-May 1972), a Dutch jazz magazine, in which I found the call from Fred "Cigar" Canté, Jaap Ludeke gives in the article Sonny Rollins terug en weg ( = Sonny Rollins gone and back) as a reason problems with his teeth. (Max Roach's dentist made him crowns on his teeth), but also problems to accept the new modern electronic styles in jazz.

Never mind - I wrote Fred "Cigar" Canté and received a letter I refound in my archive. It reads: Beste Hans (= Dear Hans), ............. Een mogelijk nog verheugender mededeling is dat Rollins naar Nederland komt. In oktober. Rotterdam. Newport Jazz Festival ( = And a very joyful announcement, Rollins will visit The Netherlands. In October. Rotterdam. Newport Jazz Festival )Paul Acket vertelde me dat in een briefje. Tot dan. Sonnymoon for all, ( = Paul Acket (= a well known Dutch producer) told me that in a message - see you at the concert. Sonnymoon for all.). The letter was dated the 6th of June 1972 and signed by Fred "Cigar" Canté.
I remember he had put one or two stickers in this letter with the text: Rollins Come Back Enkele verontruste jazzfans ( = Some worryed jazz fans). I sticked one at my school diary. Well, I haven't met Fred at the Newport Jazz Festival in Rotterdam in October 1972 as he suggested and as far as my information is now, Sonny Rollins didn't play at that festival, although a lot of great names were there: Dave Brubeck, Charles Mingus, Elvin Jones, Gerry Mulligan, Nat Adderley, Jimmy Smith, Kenny Burrell, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt, Kai Winding, Thelonious Monk and last but not least Art Blakey. As far as I know the verontruste jazzfans (= worried jazz fans) had to wait until the International Laren Jazz Festival (August 1973) were Sonny Rollins gave an unforgetable concert. I found a fragment of the start of the concert in Laren. Hope you like it.

TERENCE BLANCHARD: I had the pleasure to see and hear Terence Blanchard perform the Movie Music of Spike Lee with his quintet and the Metropole Orchestra conducted by Vince Mendoza, with special guests Jamie Cullum, Bilal and Patti Austin. To say it was thrilling is an understatement. As his solos swelled and ebbed the orchestra invoked a special feeling different than what I remember sitting in the movie houses, giving each soundtrack selection a different emotional feeling for me. On a large screen behind the orchestra movie film clips coordinated with the musicial selections in a kinetic and dramatic presentation. We were left breathless at the last note.

Vandaag de Engelse vertaling van een bijdrage, onder de titel Sonnymoon for all die ik gisteren in het Nederlands plaatste over de actie Rollins Come Back door Fred Cigar Canté gehouden begin jaren zeventig. Wie toch ook wat wil lezen raad ik de bijdragen aan over de twee bluesgiganten Sonny Terry en Brownie McGhee of een bijdrage over de grote jazz trombonist Jay Jay Johnson.

TERENCE BLANCHARD: Hallo Hans, Ik had vorig jaar het genoegen om pleasure Terence Blanchard te zien en horen optreden in het programma rond de muziek van de film Spike Lee met zijn quintet en het Metropole orkest o.l.v. Vince Mendoza, met speciale gasten Jamie Cullum, Bilal en Patti Austin. zou zeggen dat het opwindend was, dan is dat een understatement. Terwijl zijn solo's zwelde de muziek door het orkest aan of juist weg op een manier die heel anders was dan in de bioscoop. Elk nummer kreeg voor mij zo een andere diepere betekenis. Op een groot scherm achter het orkest werden filmfragmenten vertoond, waardoor het een flitsende uitvoering werd. We luisterden ademloos tot aan de laatste noot.

Terence Blanchard

Today a great album by Terence Blanchard, that was recorded on the 17th and 18th of March 1998, ten years ago, titled Terence Blanchard Jazz in Film ( Sony Classical SK 60671); three tracks were recorded in April of that year.
Terence Blanchard is on of those great jazz trumpet player that is close associated with film soundtracks, like his playing in Spike Lee's films as Do The Right Thing and Mo' Better Blues. For this album Terence Blanchard organized an all star group featuring himself at the trumpet, Steve Turre on trombone, Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone, Donald Harrison on alto saxophone, Kenny Kirkland on piano, Reginald Veal on bass and Carl Allen on drums. Kenny Kirkland passed away a half year after these recordings.
Terence Blanchard started his career, after some years with Lionel Hampton, in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, where he took over the trumpet from Wynton Marsalis. He became also the musical director of the band. Both Donald Harrison and Steve Turre joined Terence in these famous Jazz Messengers. On this album Terence Blanchard interpreted nine film themes, like Bernard Herman's Taxi Driver, Alex North A Streetcar Named Desire and The Man With The Golden Arm with Frank Sinatra as main actor. It is a fact that Joe Henderson, who passed away almost seven years ago, plays very good and I really loved his solo in The Man With The Golden Arm. He also recorded one of his own film compositions, Clockers, with a great solo of the late Kenny Kirkland at the piano.

The trumpet of Terence Blanchard learns that he has listened to bebop trumpet players like Clifford Brown and the 1950s Miles Davis, but also to earlier classical trumpet player like Sweet Edison and Buck Clayton. It is said that his playing is beginning to look like Dizzy's. The film tunes are no copies of the original film themes, but re-arranged by Terence Blanchard wich makes it a personal document with great music. Well, although not really annoying, there are strings in some tunes, directed by Steve Mercurio. Nowadays Terence Blanchard is the artistic director of the Thelonious Monk Institue of Jazz Performancers in Los Angeles and I found a lenghtly fragment of a clinic I love to share with you.

TIP: Do you remember the young Dutch jazz vocalist Ester Groenenberg, who performed a great tune titled Zuurkool Met Worst at the Paul De Leeuw TV show last year on Dutch TV? I showed you a fragment of that performance a previous blog: The Magic Of Jazz. This week she will be live on Dutch radio on Thursday the 20th of March 2008 between 18:00 - 20:00 hrs ( 6:00 to 8:00 pm GMT+1), to receive world-wide at internet radio. She will perform four own songs in Dutch with Dirk Schreuders, Gertjan v/d Weerd and Rutger Hoorn.

Vandaag wil ik een mooie plaat van Terence Blanchard voorstellen, opgenomen op 17 en 18 maart 1998, tien jaar geleden, getiteld Terence Blanchard Jazz in Film ( Sony Classical SK 60671); drie nummers dateren uit april 1998.
Terence Blanchard is één van die grote trompettisten, die nauw verbonden zijn met filmmuziek, zoals met zijn medewerking aan Spike Lee films als Do The Right Thing en Mo' Better Blues. Voor deze plaat, die een keur aan filmmelodieën bevat, vormde Terence Blanchard een all-star groep met namen als Steve Turre op trombone, Joe Henderson op tenorsax, Donald Harrison op altsax, Kenny Kirkland op piano, Reginald Veal aan de bas en Carl Allen op slagwerk. Terence Blanchard zelf natuurlijk op de trompet. Kenny Kirkland, overigens, overleed een half jaar na deze opnamen. Terence Blanchard begon zijn carriere, na een paar jaar bij Lionel Hampton, in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, waar hij de trompet van Wynton Marsalis overnam. Hij werd ook musical director, zegt maar muzikaal leider van de band. Zowel Donald Harrison als Steve Turre speelden met Terence in deze beroemde Jazz Messengers. Op deze plaat interpreteert Terence Blanchard negen filmthema's, zoals Bernard Herman's Taxi Driver, Alex North A Streetcar Named Desire en de film The Man With The Golden Arm met Frank Sinatra in de hoofdrol. Joe Henderson, die zeven jaar geleden overleed, speelt heel goed op deze plaat en ik was vooral onder de indruk van zijn solo in The Man With The Golden Arm. Terence Blanchard, zelf ook actief in het maken van soundtracks, schreef de muziek voor de film Clockers, die hier ook terug te vinden is met een prachtige solo van Kenny Kirkland op piano.

Het spel van Terence Blanchard leert dat hij veel geluisterd heeft naar de grote bebop trompettisten als Clifford Brown en Miles Davis, zoals die in de jaren vijftig speelde, maar ook hoor je elementen van nog verder terug in zijn spel zoals van Sweet Edison en Buck Clayton. Ook gaat zijn spel steeds meer lijken op dat Dizzy Gillispie, vinden insiders. De filmtunes zijn geen copiën geworden van het origineel; na het oorspronkelijke thema gaan de nummers hun eigen weg. en dat maakt de CD tot een echte Terence Blanchard album. Zoals bij filmmuziek gebruikelijk zijn er af en toe ook strijkers aan toegevoegd, onder leiding van Steve Mercurio, maar gelukkig nooit overheersend. Terence Blanchard is op dit moment artistiek directeur van het prestigieuze Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performancers in Los Angeles en ik vond een fragment van een clinic met hem dat ik graag wil laten zien.

TIP: Kennen jullie Esther Groenenberg nog? Zij trad vorig jaar op bij Paul de Leeuw met het lied Zuurkool met Worst en wist daarmee zelfs Paul stil te krijgen.
Ze schreef me: Hai allemaal, donderdag 20 maart ben ik tussen 18.00 en 20.00 te gast in het programma DeSmet Live dat wordt uitgezonden op Radio5 (de IKON). Ik ga daar 4 liedjes zingen die ik zelf heb geschreven, allemaal in het Nedcerlands. De vier liedjes komen verspreid over die twee uur voorbij. Ik word begeleid door Dirk Schreuders, Gertjan v/d Weerd en Rutger Hoorn. Voor mij een heel bijzonder optreden, voor het eerst écht in 't openbaar met eigen werk! HOERA!! Je kan het live via internet luisteren en via de radio: 747 AM. Mocht je het leuk vinden: je kan ook live aanwezig zijn in de DeSmet studio's om mij aan te moedigen. The Legacy of Art Blakey

One of the band leaders that appeals to one's imagination was Art Blakey. Art Blakey (1919 - 1990 ) was one of the founders and life-long band leader of his famous Jazz Messengers, the breeding ground for a lot of young talent. Wynton Marsalis, to name one, started his career in this band. Art Blakey was, in my case, one of the first legendary jazz musicians from the States I heard in concert (20 April 1980 ) at The Doelen in Rotterdam.
When I have refound the pictures I made during that night, I will tell more about that concert.

In 1997, now ten years ago, a group of musicians decided to make a tour dedicated to this great Jazz Messengers. The musicians of the band were all former members of the band. From the first period were Benny Golson and Curtis Fuller; Terence Blanchard and Peter Washington played in the 1980s and Geoff Keezer was Bu's ( Blakey's pet name) last piano player. Lewish Nash, the drummer, never played with Art Blakey, a drummer himself, but he was tremendous influenced by him. This album was recorded during the tour dedicated to The Legacy of Art Blakey at a live concert at the Iridium in New York City, and during some concerts in Pittsburg where Blakey lived, today ten years ago, on the 7th and 9th of November 1997.

The album contains some well known tunes as played by Blakey's originally Jazz Messengers, like of course Blues March. Other tunes are the Wayne Shorter composition One By One and Whisper Not, like Blues March, written by Benny Golson. A great tribute to Art Blakey.

I found a 1959 film fragments of the originally Art Blakey Jazz Messengers in San Remo to share with you. Hope you like it.

Eén van die bandleiders, die tot ieders verbeelding spreekt was Art Blakey. Art Blakey (1919 - 1990 ) was één van de oprichters van de Jazz Messengers en zijn leven lang leider van deze beroemde formatie, broedplaats voor jong talent. Musici als Wynton Marsalis begonnen hun loopbaan in de Jazz Messengers. Art Blakey was, in mijn geval, de eerste grote Amerikaanse jazzmuzikant, die ik live zag optreden in De Doelen in Rotterdam ( 20 April 1980).

In 1997, nu tien jaar geleden, besloot een groep voormalige leden van de Jazz Messengers om een tournee te maken. De musici hadden allen vroeger of later een tijdje deel uitgemaakt van de band. Uit die eerste periode dateerden Benny Golson en Curtis Fuller; Terence Blanchard en Peter Washington speelden in de jaren tachtig bij Blakey en Geoff Keezer was Bu's ( Blakey's koosnaampje) laatste pianist. Lewish Nash, de drummer, speelde nooit bij Blakey, wat uiteraard niet zo vreemd is aangezien hij zelf drummer was. Wel is hij ontzettende beinvloed door zijn spel. De CD The Jazz Messengers - The Legacy of Art Blakey ( Telarc Jazz 83407) is opgenomen tijdens een live concert in het Iridium in New York City, en tijdens enkele concerten in Pittsburg, de woonplaats van Art Blakey, nu tien jaar geleden ( 7-9 november 1997).

De plaat bevat bekende Art Blakey nummers, zoals, uiteraard zou ik willen zeggen, zijn Blues March; daar kom je niet omheen. En verder One in One, een Wayne Shorter compositie en Plexus, net als Blues March, één van de Benny Golson composities op deze plaat. Ik vond een filmfragment uit 1959 met daarop de originele Art Blakey Jazz Messengers in San Remo. Ik hoop dat het je bevalt.
