Robert Normann - The Harry Lime Theme

I became interested in Robert Normann and his music thanks to a set of CDs released about 20 years ago by Jon Larsen, guitarist in the Hot Club de Norvege and an expert of Robert Normann's music. A few years ago a new serie of Robert Normann CDs was released by Normann Records. This series contains the Definitive Collection of Robert Normann's music all transfered directly from the originally sources. The Robert Normann - The definitive collection 1938-41, vol. 1 CD ( NOCD 3004 ) has been reviewed in a previous blog, titled Robert Normann - Sweet Sue ; volume 2 in Robert Normann - Ding Dong Dang and volume three, titled Robert Normann - Smålåt. This contribution deals with the fourth volume: The Harry Lime Theme
It starts with the Robert Normann arrangement of the well known film tune The Harry Lime Theme made by Anton Karas for the film The Third Man. Robert Normann played this theme for a music clip at the Norwegian (NRK) TV in November 1959 with Håkon Nilsen on the bass. This tune is also available on the Robert Normann DVD Shine - The TV-Collection.Robert Normann in the mid after he recorded for the Søndagsposten NRK. The bass player is Håkon Nilsen.

The tracks on volume four refers to a period that, as I said in a previous contribution , that Robert Normann didn't like to play in public. He was satisfied with a simple life, retreated in the countryside, building on his new guitar and sometimes a gig with popular Norwegian musicians. The music on this CD reminds me to some popular bands from the 1950s, like in The Netherlands, bands that played in the so-called Indo-Rock, popular music played on amplified guitars, as by the Crazy Rockers and The Blue Diamonds. The tracks on this album contain titles as Junkers Samba, a composition Robert made remembering a 1948 flight to Germany to entertain the Norwegian troups; Säkkijärven Polka, Gammel Polka, Handkerchief Fox and Julepotpurri, a medley of Christmas songs. Although there isn't much jazz to enjoy on this album, the music can be entertaining and amuse on certain moments.

The tune Säkkijärven Polka, a well known Finnish folk song, can be find twice on this compilation. The first one was recorded April 1959 and the second one, an alternative version made 40 years ago, on the 2nd of February 1968. It is a pity that most of the liner notes of this volume are in Norwegian, which makes this CD for foreigners rather inaccesible. That's a pity, as Robert Normann was a guitar player that deserves further recognition. To prove that, I love to share with you (again) a preview of the Robert Normann DVD Shine - The TV-Collection.

Ik raakte geinteresseerd in Robert Normann en zijn muziek dankzij een serie CDs, die zo'n 20 jaar geleden uitgebracht werd door Jon Larsen, gitarist bij de Hot Club de Norvege en een expert in de muziek van Robert Normann. Een paar jaar geleden werd de serie opnieuw samengesteld en uitgebracht door Normann Records. Deze serie omvat vijf CDs met the Definitive Collection of Robert Normann en bevat alle opnamen direct overgeschreven van de originele bronnen. Dankzij Normann Records kunnen we nu de hele muzikale loopbaan van deze grote jazzgitarist volgen. The Robert Normann - The definitive collection 1938-41, vol. 1 CD ( NOCD 3004 ) heb ik besproken in Robert Normann - Sweet Sue ; Volume 2 in Robert Normann - Ding Dong Dang en deel drie, Robert Normann - Smålåt. Deze bijdrage beschrijft het vierde deel: The Harry Lime Theme.

De CD begint met het bekende titelnummer, The Harry Lime Theme uit de film The Third Man gecomponeerd en gespeeld door Anton Karas. Robert Normann speelt het thema van de film als één van de eerste muziekclips voor de Noorse TV (NRK) in november 1959 met Håkon Nilsen op bas. Dit nummer is ook terug te vinden "in beeld" op de Robert Normann DVD Shine - The TV- CollectionRobert Normann tussen Noorse musici tijdens opnamen voor de Søndagsposten NRK. De bassist is Håkon Nilsen.

De opnamen van deze vierde CD zijn uit dezelfde periode als die van de vorige CD, waarin Robert Normann zelden nog in het openbaar jazz speelde. Hij was tevreden met zijn teruggetrokken leven op het Noorse platteland, met het bouwen aan zijn eigen electrische gitaar en af en toe een schnabbel met populaire Noorse artiesten. De muziek op deze CD doet me denken aan de zo genaamde Indo-Rock uit de jaren vijftig en zestig, zoals we die in Nederland kenden met groepen als the Crazy Rockers en de Blue Diamonds: electrische gitaarmuziek recht-toe-rechtaan. De opnamen op deze CD bevatten titels als Junkers Samba, waarin Robert Normann zijn vliegtocht naar een optreden voor de Noorse troepen in Duitsland in 1948 muzikaal verwerkt; Säkkijärven Polka, Gammel Polka, Handkerchief Fox en Julepotpurri, een medley van kerstnummers. Weinig tot geen jazz, wat niet weg neemt dat de muziek op de CD op bepaalde momenten of omstandigheden kan boeien.

Het nummer de Säkkijärven Polka, een bekend Fins volksliedje, vinden we twee keer op de plaat; de eerste keer in een opname uit april 1959 en de tweede keer van een alternatieve opname van veertig jaar geleden: 2 februari 1968. Het is jammer dat het grootste deel van het informatieve boekje in het Noors is geschreven; jammer, want deze grote gitarist Robert Normann verdient gewoon ook erkenning buiten Noorwegen. Om te bewijzen wat een groot gitarist hij is, laat ik nog een keer een voorbeschouwing zien van de Robert Normann DVD Shine - The TV-Collection.

Yesterday I received a message that Jon Larsen from Norway won the Buddy -prisen ( Buddy-award), a pretentious award, presented since 1956 by the Norsk Jazzforbund. Up to now 44 musicians received this award, named after the legendary jazz trumpet player Buddy Bolden.


Jon Larsen received this price, as the official papers say: Buddyprisvinneren for 2007 har vært en aktiv musiker og en markant aktør i det norske jazzmiljøet i snart 30 år. ( The winner of the Buddy award for 2007 has been an active musician and a characterictic author about the Norwegian jazzscene for the past 30 years.) Prisvinneren har utmerket seg som soloutøver på sitt instrument, men er kanskje enda bedre kjent som en sterk og inkluderende bandleder. ( The award winner is a great soloist on his instruments, but also made himself usefull as a bandleader. ) The award is a statue of Buddy Bolden and 50,000 Kroner and a trip by plane to a place in Europe. I know Jon Larsen for many years, not personally, but from email contacts about our common passion Oscar Aleman. Born in January 1959 he learned to play the guitar as a kid, but started professional as a painter. He learns to play the guitar in the Hot Club Style of Django Reinhardt at the age of 20 and founded the Hot Club de Norvège together with some friends Per Frydenlund and Svein Aarbostad.
In 1981 they play at the Molde Jazz Festival for the very first time and during this festival he meets Robert Normann. He becomes captivated by this legend in Norwegian jazz. I told about Robert Normann in several previous web logs and that should have been impossible without the research of Jon Larsen, who studied Robert Normann's life for years: Sweet Sue (1938-1941) - Ding Dong Dang (1940 - 1954) - Smålåt (1950s - 1960s ). In 1988 he started his own record label Hot Club Records with The Vintage Guitar Series, in which a lot of interesting music was released, like the complete Robert Normann collection, later reissued again by Normann Records, who controls the Normann Legacy with liner notes of Jon Larsen. I'm not going to list here all artists that recorded for Jon Larsen or the projects Jon Larsen did launched, but one project I have to mention. In 1997 he travelled to Buenos Aires and met the widow of Oscar Aleman and a lot of musicians Oscar played with, like Walter Malosetti, Ricardo Pellican and Carlos Zaragoza to name some and they recorded for Hot club Records the great tribute to Oscar Aleman album Stringtime in Buenos Aires ( Hot Club Records HCRCD 106)

Gisteren ontving ik het bericht dat de Noorse muzikant en jazzonderzoeker Jon Larsen de Noorse Buddy-prisen ( = de Buddy-prijs) gewonnen heeft; een pretentieuze onderscheiding uitgereikt sinds 1956 door het Norsk Jazzforbund. Tot nu toe hebben 44 mensen deze prijs gekregen, genoemd naar de legendarische trompettist Buddy Bolden. Jon Larsen ontvangt deze prijs omdat, zoals de officiële verklaring luidt: Buddyprisvinneren for 2007 har vært en aktiv musiker og en markant aktør i det norske jazzmiljøet i snart 30 år. ( De Buddy-prijs voor 2007 is toegekend aan een actief musicus en karakateristiek jazzauteur op het gebied van de Noorse jazzgeschiedenis, die al 30 jaar hierin actief is.) Prisvinneren har utmerket seg som soloutøver på sitt instrument, men er kanskje enda bedre kjent som en sterk og inkluderende bandleder. Ik ken Jon Larsen al heel wat jaar, niet persoonlijk, maar dankzij emailcontacten, die vooral over onze gemeenschappelijke passie, Oscar Aleman, gingen. Geboren in januari 1959 leerde hij als kind gitaar spelen, maar begon professioneel als schilder. Hij leerde gitaarspelen in de stijl van de Hot Club van Django Reinhardt op 20 jarige leeftijd, hetgeen resulteerde in de oprichting van de Hot Club de Norvège, samen met zijn jeugdvrienden Per Frydenlund en Svein Aarbostad.

In 1981 speelt hij voor het eerst op het Molde Jazz Festival en tijdens dit festival ontmoet hij de legendarische Noorse gitarist Robert Normann. Hij is gefascineerd door deze Noorse gitaarlegende. Ik heb in deze Keep swinging weblogs als verschillende keren Robert Normann als onderwerp gehad, en dit verhaal zou niet te vertellen zijn zonder de onderzoekingen van Jon Larsen: Sweet Sue (1938-1941) - Ding Dong Dang (1940 - 1954) - Smålåt (1950s - 1960s ). In 1988 begon hij zijn eigen platenlabel: Hot Club Records met de zgn. Vintage Guitar Series, waarop een heleboel interessante muziek werd ondergebracht, zoals de complete Robert Normann verzameling, later heruitgegeven door het familiebedrijf Normann Records , die zijn muzikale erfgoed bewaakt, waarbij de tekst in het hoesje van de expert Jon Larsen waren. Ik ga hier geen lijst maken van alle grote namen die voor Jon Larsen platen opgenomen hebben, noch een overzicht van alle projecten, waaraan Jon meegewerkt heeft; wel wil ik zijn reis naar Buenos Aires noemen. I became interested in Robert Normann and his music thanks to a set of CDs released about 20 years ago by Jon Larsen, guitarist in the Hot Club de Norvege and an expert about Robert Normann. A few years ago a new serie of Robert Normann CDs was released by Normann Records.
This series contains the Definitive Collection of Robert Normann's music all transfered directly from the originally sources. Thanks to Normann Records we can now enjoy the complete musical heritage of this great jazz guitar player. The Robert Normann - The definitive collection 1938-41, vol. 1 CD ( NOCD 3004 ) has been reviewed and the second volume was the subject in another contribution titled Ding Dong Dang.


The third volume of The Definitive Collection ( NOCD 3008 ), which starts with the Robert Normann composition Smålåt, contains the music of the years 1950 up to 1971. In the first and second volume the collection of 78rpm has been collected; in the third volume you can find some hodge podge of recordings Robert Normann made during that period. Jazz was no longer the music for the common man and not as popular as during the Second World War and the five years after that. Robert Normann hardly played jazz anymore and performed in theatres and radio programs and often accompanied popular Norwegian vocalists, although not jazz related at all. This music, I guess, it to be heard at the Normann Records compilation Norske slagere 1955.
People who visited him during this period tell that he didn't play often, and he prefered to do other thinks in stead of guitar playing, like wood carving. He was an expert in wood carving. As he was the first Norwegian guitar player that had build his own electric amplified guitar, he tried to develope new guitars, like one that could play both solo as bass.

A couple of times friends like John Svendson, vibraphonist, Per Nyhaug, vibes and drums and Håkon Nilsen (bass) invited Robert to join the old boys and most tracks are from that kind of reunions. Great stuff. It seems as if the Shine The TV Collection DVD refers to these sessions too and as I wrote in a previous blog: this great DVD record fascinated me. These recordings are really great. That's why I love to show you again a preview of this great DVD. Enjoy it as much as I did !!

Een paar jaar geleden werd The Definitive Collection uitgebracht door Normann Records. Deze serie bevat vijf CDs, die Robert Normann's hele oeuvre beslaan en waarvan de geluidskwaliteit uitstekend te noemen is, omdat de nummers direct vanaf het originele materiaal afkomstig zijn. Dankzij Normann Records is de hele muzikale nalatenschap van deze Django Reinhardt-van-het-noorden puntgaaf bewaard gebleven. De Robert Normann - The definitive collection 1938-41, vol. 1 CD ( NOCD 3004 ) is besproken in een eerdere bijdrage: Deel 2 van The Definitive Collection, getiteld Ding Dong Dang vind je is ook eerder besproken.
Het derde deel in The Definitive Collection ( NOCD 3008 ), die begint met een eigen compositie Smålåt, bevat de jaren 1950 tot 1971. Waren het in de jaren daarvoor vooral de 78toeren platen van Robert Normann, die heruitgebracht zijn, dit deel bevat een ratjetoe aan jazzopnamen die teruggevonden zijn. Jazz was niet meer "hot" tijdens deze periode - andere muziekstijlen, ook in Noorwegen, werden populair. De periode rond en in de Tweede Wereldoorlog, waarbij de jazz populair was bij de gewone man, was voorgoed voorbij. Robert Normann speelt dan ook nog maar nauwelijks jazz; we vinden hem terug in talrijke begeleidingsgroepen in het theater, op de radio en op populaire hits van Noorse zangers en zangeressen. Voor deze muziek moet je, denk ik, de uitgave Norske Slagere 1955 beluisteren, ook uitgegeven door Normann Records. Mensen die hem gekend hebben tijdens deze periode weten te vertellen dat hij niet vaak meer speelde en dat hij liever andere dingen deed, zoals houtbewerken, waarin hij erg goed was. Zoals ik al eerder vertelde had hij zijn eigen electrische gitaar gebouwd en rond deze tijd was hij bezig met het ontwikkelen en bouwen van een gitaar, die zowel voor solo's als voor de baspartij gebruikt kon worden. Hier stak hij veel tijd en energie in.
Een paar keer konden vrienden, zoals John Svendson, vibrafonist, Per Nyhaug, vibrafoon en slagwerk en Håkon Nilsen (bas) Robert bewegen om samen weer eens te spelen met the old boys; veel van de opnamen van deze CD komen hier vandaan. Prachtige nummers overigens, waarin ik de Robert Normann herken, die me zo boeide op de eerder besproken DVD Shine The TV Collection. Deze DVD vormt voor mij het hoogtepunt uit Robert Normanns muzikale erfenis. Ik wil, tot slot van dit onderwerp, graag nog een keer de voorvertoning van deze DVD laten zien, waarin je Robert Normann live ziet en hoort spelen.

Thanks to Normann Records we can now enjoy the complete musical heritage of this great jazz guitar player. The Robert Normann - The definitive collection 1938-41, vol. 1 CD ( NOCD 3004 ) has been reviewed in a previous blog. Volume 2 starts with the tune: Ding Dong Dang.

The second volume contains the music from the 1942 - 1954 period, a rather turbulent period in his life. As the electric guitar became a popular instrument in jazz Robert Normann made one himself using some stolen parts: telephone magnets, copper wire, pitch, and a small wooden plate, Jon Larsen tells in the liner notes. During this period he developed his own unique elegant improvisational style of playing the guitar. Isn't that remarkable? He had no connection with Django Reinhard, nor with Oscar Aleman or Charlie Christian; all three great guitar players who developed their own unique of playings. It seems that he found inspiration by listening to records of other great jazz musicians like Coleman Hawkins and Leon "Chu" Berry; although both no guitar players - they influenced Robert Normann indirectly in the development of his own unique style.
In the fall of 1939 he replaced Sverre Jensen in The Hot Kiddies, later renamed as the Gunnar Dues Kvartett. They had a regular spot at the Lido in Oslo, six days a week, but when the war started this was all over.
For Robert Normann a rather turbulent period, as he developed an increasing alcoholism during that period and if I have to believe the stories he must have been part of numerous fights and sexual gatherings; unbelievable as you have seen him playing on the Robert Norman DVD - Shine - TV collection, where he looks, aged now, as a calm retired grocer.
During this period he was a free lancer playing as a restaurant musician, in Oslo clubs like Edderkoppen, Dronningen and The Chat Noir ( one of the extras is a 1946 private recording with the Chat's Noir Orkester ). The other tracks are by the Frank Ottersen Sekstett, Syv Muntre ( free translated as The Seven Enliven), Pete Brown & Hans Orkester (and his Orchestra) and a test recording by the Rolf Syversen-Robert Normann Quartet.
It is said that Svend Asmussen tried to get Robert Normann into his bands, but Robert refussed and didn't want to leave Norway: he preferred to fiske ål fra husbåten sin i Frognerkilen (= fish for eel from his houseboat in Frognersklen). It seems to me as if I have heard that story before and maybe you remember the scenes in the Tal Farlow documentary Talmage Farlow, where the legendary US guitar player Tal Farlow lives retreat in a houseboat, fishing, earning some money as a letter painter and playing his guitar.

Ik raakte geinteresseerd in Robert Normann en zijn muziek dankzij een set CDs, uitgebracht zo'n 20 jaar geleden, door Jon Larsen, gitarist in de Hot Club de Norvege en kenner van het leven van Robert Normann. Een paar jaar geleden werd de The Definitive Collection uitgebracht door Normann Records. Deze serie bevat vijf CDs, die Robert Normann's hele oeuvre beslaan en waarvan de geluidskwaliteit uitstekend te noemen is, omdat de nummers direct vanaf het originele materiaal ( de 78-toeren platen) afkomstig zijn. Dankzij Normann Records is de hele muzikale nalatenschap van deze Django Reinhardt-van-het-noorden puntgaaf bewaard gebleven. De Robert Normann - The definitive collection 1938-41, vol. 1 CD ( NOCD 3004 ) is besproken in een eerdere bijdrage: vandaag volume 2 (NOCD 3005 ), dat begint met Ding Dong Dang.
Het tweede deel bestaat uit de muziek uit de periode 1942 - 1954, een nogal turbulente periode uit zijn leven. De electrische gitaar was in opkomst in de jazzmuziek en dus maakte Robert Normann zelf zo'n populair instrument gebruikmakend van allerlei gestolen onderdelen: electromagneten uit telefoons, koperdraad, schakelaars en een houten plaat, vertelt Jon Larsen in het bijbehorende boekje. Tijdens deze periode ontwikkelde hij ook zijn eigen unieke, ietwat elegante stijl van gitaarspelen. En dat is op zijn zachtst gezegd opmerkelijk. Hij had geen contacten met Django Reinhardt ook niet met Oscar Aleman of Charlie Christian; alle drie grote namen, die hun eigen gitaarstijl ontwikkelden. Het lijkt er op dat Robert vooral luisterde naar platen van jazzmusici als Coleman Hawkins en Leon "Chu" Berry en die muziek vertaalde naar zijn gitaar. In het najaar van 1939 verving Robert Normann Sverre Jensen als gitarist bij The Hot Kiddies, een groep die later herdoopt werd tot het Gunnar Dues Kvartett. Ze speelden zes dagen in de week in het Lido, een club in Oslo, maar toen de oorlog begon was dat allemaal voorbij. Voor Robert Normann breekt er een roerige tijd aan, waarin hij bouwde aan zijn alcoholisme en waarin hij, afgaande op de verhalen, vaak zijn handen niet kon thuishouden en regelmatig betrokken raakte in vechtpartijen. Ook doen er verhalen de ronde over zijn wilde sexleven, iets wat je je amper kunt voorstellen als je de schitterende DVD - Shine - TV collection bekijkt, waar Robert, zij het wat ouder, eerder lijkt op een kruidenier-in-ruste, dan op een flierefluiter of vechtersbaas. Tijdens deze periode speelde hij voornamelijk freelance als gitarist in restaurants, in clubs in Oslo, zoals de Edderkoppen, Dronningen en The Chat Noir ( één van de extra's is een serie privéopnamen met het Chat's Noir Orkester uit 1946). De andere nummers van deze CD zijn met groepen als het Frank Ottersen Sekstett, Syv Muntre ( vrijvertaald als de Zeven Opvrolijkers), Pete Brown & Hans Orkester ( Pete Brown en zijn orkest) en een paar testopnamen met het Rolf Syversen-Robert Normann Quartet.

Men zegt dat Svend Asmussen geprobeerd heeft Robert Normann over te halen in zijn bands te komen spelen, maar dat wilde Robert niet; hij vond het wel goed zo en wilde Noorwegen niet verlaten. Hij prefereerde liever om te fiske ål fra husbåten sin i Frognerkilen (= vissen op paling vanaf zijn woonboot in Frognersklen). Ik vind het opvallend, want als ik dat lees dan zie ik de woonboot van Tal Farlow, de Amerikaanse gitarist, voor me uit de documentaire Talmage Farlow. Tal trok zich in de jaren vijftig terug op zijn boot en leefde bijna als een kluizenaar op zijn woonboot: wat vissen, wat gitaar spelen en wat geld verdienend als letterschilder. Opvallend die overeenkomsten.
