Robert Normann

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
When you enter a CD shop nowadays, at least in The Netherlands, you learn that CD's are no longer hot items. They sell DVDs, most films for entertaining, but also films with music clips of popular artists. Even the jazz has to. Vitaphone film shorts and soundies from the 1940s and 1950s have been reissued, but also live performances of musicians like Miles Davis are to be found. Documentaries, made for televison, have been released for use in the livingroom.

Some times ago I found a DVD with some great 1970s performances of a rather unknown Norwegian guitar player, Robert Normann. The DVD is titled Robert Normann - Shine, with the subtitle The TV Collection.
This DVD contains ca. 40 minutes of rare fragments from performances Robert Normann made for the Norwegian television. In fact the set contains three parts. The first one are some 1971 black and white fragments; the second part, in color, where made in 1974.
The final part are some 1992 recordings of Robert Normann together with a drummer. It ends with some private shots from ca. 1993 of Robert Normann playing the guitar in his living room together with a collegue, who has to drop out when Robert shows his skills. A great experience.
Robert Normann, born in Sarpsborg, Norway June 1916, passed away May 1998 81 years old. He started at the accordion and tenor saxophone before he became a guitar player. In the late 1930s he played in bands like Freddie Valier's and Gunnar Due. The picture above shows Robert Normann in the right corner below at the guitar in the 1941 Rowland's Orchestra. In the 1940s he was part of the famous String Swing, a great Scandinavian group of jazz musicians. ( Nowadays the Swing Strings is a Danish jazz ensemble). He started his own quartet before he became part of the big band directed by Pete Brown. In the 1950s he played with Frank Ottersen, the violin player and Willy Andresen at the piano. Since 1955 he didn't play often in public and as he was a very modest person he stayed unknown outside Norway. Even in the books Jazzgitaristen ( Alexander Schmitz) and The Guitar in Jazz ( James Sallis) is name is absent. What a shame, because this DVD shows a very skilled jazz guitar player. I saw him labeled somewhere as The Best European Jazz Musician Ever.

The DVD shows a passionate guitar player. The quality of the films is very good and it is a joy to listen and view Robert Normann playing his music. This Shine DVD is, together with the great series of Robert Normann CDs published by Normann Records AS, and the Herman Records series Jazz in Norway by the Norsk Jazz Arkiv (Norwegian Jazz Archive) a great monument in honor of Robert Normann.
Kjetil Sørensen from Normann Records AS told me that all Robert Normann CD's previous released on Hot Club Records, are no longer available. Normann Records AS have released a new series of Robert Normann CDs where all the music/recordings have been digital restored from 78" records and not just copied from LPs to CDs as Hot Club Records did. Also the Robert Normann CDs Normann Records AS have released does not contain the same music order as the Hot Club Records CDs. Our CDs (Normann Records AS) does also contain some recordings Hot Club Record never have released.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

Thanks, Hans, for this contribution on one of the greatest European jazzguitarist. The dvd is a great document in the honor of RN. His importance as a jazzguitarist was made clear to the world through the pioneering Jazz Solography series by renowned jazzcritic, Jan Evensmo. One of Evensmo's volumes in the serie is devoted to the recordings of Charlie Christian, Robert Nornamm and Oscar Alemán. This alone shows where Normann rigthly belongs! Why does 'jazzhistorians' writing an overview of a certain topic (i.e. the evolution of jazzguitar) always seem to avoid sources outside what is already known to the public in general interested in the subject? This way the story of our beloved music very soon will contain but a few American legends, a pity.
