Wes Montgomery
( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
A few weeks ago the NPS ( Dutch Television) sent out some rare film shots of Dutch jazz programs from the 1960s. One of them was a fragment of Wes Montgomery playing with the Trio Pim Jacobs. This fragment is rather remarkable as Wes and Pim are discussing the chords and melody lines before the start of the program. This film shot seems to be from a concert that was broadcast by the Dutch VARA radio on the 2nd of April 1965 at Studio 7 in Hilversum (The Netherlands)

The CD A Jazz Hour With The Wes Montgomery Quartet ( JHR 73569 ), a low budget release from the 1990s, contains six tracks: Jingles - Twisted Blues - The Girl Next Door - Impressions - Here's That Rainy Day and Four On Six. The line up of the quartet is Wes Montgomery on guitar, Harold Mabern at the piano, Arthur Harper on bass and Jimmy Lovelace on drums. These recordings were made during a tour Wes made with his Quartet all through Europe between March and May when he visited radio and TV studios in San Remo ( Italy), Paris (France), Brussels (Belgium), Hilversum (The Netherlands), Hamburg (Germany) and London (Great Britain).

Wes Montgomery, born in Indianapolis in 1925 passed away in 1968 43 years old. He was a self-taughed guitar player. During the 1950s he played at the Flame and the Missile Room in Indianapolis and recorded with the Mastersounds Group, later better known as the Montgomery Brothers as Monk and Buddy Montgomery, his brothers, were part of the group. During the 1960s he recorded with big bands like Herb Albert's. He is one of the most important guitar players since Charlie Christian.
I found a fragment of a performance made in 1965, somewhere during his tour through Europe, in which you can see and hear Wes Montgomery playing. Enjoy it.

De CD A Jazz Hour With The Wes Montgomery Quartet ( JHR 73569 ), een goedkope uitgave uit de jaren negentig, bevat zes nummers: Jingles - Twisted Blues - The Girl Next Door - Impressions - Here's That Rainy Day and Four On Six.

1 Comments:
Thanks, Hans, for sharing this great video performance featuring Wes Montgomery - a remarkable jazzguitarist, indeed. His tecnique, using his right hand thump instead of a pick, became a hallmark, made his sound very mellow and pleasant (- sometimes boring, also). Anyway, the video fragment shows off the best of his style in up-time tempo.
