Today I love to point you to a great piano player, Michel Camilo. In fact, Enrique V. from Argentina, pointed me to a film fragment, that I love to share with you. It shows Michel Camilo at the piano playing his composition Caribe. He is accompanied by a band featuring Paquito D'Rivera on alto sax, Michael Philip Mossman on the trumpet, Israel Lopez "Cachao" on bass, Cliff Almond on drums and Guarionex Aquino percussion. The fragment is from a live concert at Lincoln Roadin Miami Beach, Florida (USA) the 27th of February 1995.
Michel Camilo was born in April 1954 in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. He was born in a very musical family. Although he started to play the accordion when he was four, he studied piano at the National Conservatory. Mind that he was only nine years old when he started his study at the Conservatory. His first experiences with jazz was Art Tatum's Tea For Two and as a teenager he specialized in both jazz and classicial music. At 16 he played as the youngest member in the Dominican National Symphony Orchestra of Santo Domingo.
When he was twenty five years old he moved to the US and learned about the music of Ernesto Lecuona, the famous Cuban composer. He played in the all-star studio group French Toast and some of his compositions became standards, like Caribe, you heard in the first fragment. He played with giants in Cuban music like Paquito D'Rivera and Tito Puente; and of course Dizzy Gillespie; the great inspirator of jazz and Cuban music. As you could learn from the first fragment, he has a rather fast, expressive and almost hyper way of playing the piano, but he is also a genius in more introspective compositions. I have the great CD Spain, a series of duet recordings featuring Michel Camilo and Tomatito, a Spanish flamenco guitarist. I like the standard Besame Mucho, with a great intro of Tomatito and the love theme Two Much.

Michel Camilo was one of the musicians in the film Calle 54, an hommage to the salsa music. It is a film, that contains 13 performances of latin musicians, like Paquito D'Rivera, Chano Dominguez, Gato Barbieri, Tito Puente, who passed away short after the film shots were made, Bebo and Chucho Valdes, who played the piano in Roy Hargrove's Crisol ten years ago in a concert at the Porgy en Bess Jazz club in Terneuzen, in the southwest part of The Netherlands. I have the sound track, released on a 2CD titled Calle 54 released by EMI, on which Michel Camilo and his trio play one tune From Within', featuring Anthony Jackson on the six string bass ( contrabajo electrico de 6 cuerdas ) and Horacio El Negro Hernandez on drums, a great percusionist who was two years ago in Terneuzen too with his Italuba group
