Een jaar geleden plaatste ik een bijdrage over de Paull Sisters. Ik had een naam gevonden op de hoes van een oude Hit of the week 78-toerenplaat uitgebracht in de herfst van 1931 en dat was alle informatie die ik had. Dankzij Bill Schoerner kreeg ik informatie over hen en foto's. Bill Schoerner is gefascineerd door dit soort zanggroepen en plaatste eerder dit jaar een schitterende serie blogs over de Williams Sisters, die een heleboel informatie losmaakte, dankzij de reacties die we van familieleden ontvingen. En nu, de geschiedenis lijkt zich te herhalen ..... ik werd benaderd door Judye Talbot, die de dochter van Julia blijkt te zijn. Julia was één van de Paull Sisters, samen met haar zus Ruth. Julia overleed in augustus van dit jaar, 104 jaar oud. Dankzij Judye, die me informatie en foto's uit haar moeders plakboeken stuurde, kan nu, voor het eerst, hun levensverhaal verteld worden. Vandaag het tweede deel getiteld: Stars of Radioland.

Advertentie waarin ze Julia and Ruth Paull (sic) genoemd worden. Grappig is dat er verwezen wordt naar de eerste TV-uitzendingen, die in de VS begin jaren dertig plaats vonden.

Ik ben ervan overtuigd, dat de Paull Sisters ook op andere Duriumplaten te horen zijn - bedenk dat er heel wat is opgenomen door anonieme studiomusici voor Durium, vaak met Phil Spitalny of Bert Hirsch als leider, met van die vage namen als the "Durium" Orchestra.
Eén zo'n opname, waarin de Paull Sisters waarschijnlijk te beluisteren zijn, is dit kleine kartonnen duriumplaatje, het kerstplaatje, dat Phil Spitalny opnam om uitgebracht te worden rond kerstmis 1931.
Advertentie voor een concert met het beroemde "the king himself" Paul Whiteman orkest op 6 mei 1931 in Appleton. De Paull Sisters worden hier omschreven als Court Harmonizers.

Phil Spitalny was een veelgevraagd bandleider voor radiouitzendingen zoals het programma Tea Dansante dat elke werkdag op NBC Network werd uitgezonden. Ik vind het leuk om nog een nummer te laten horen van het Phil Spitalny orkest met The Paull Sisters uit september 1929: Bottoms Up ( hierme wordt bedoeld het leeggieten van flessen met alcoholische dranken ten tijde van de drooglegging).

Rond diezelfde tijd zongen de twee zusjes bij het grote Paul Whiteman orkest. Ze moeten gezongen hebben in radiouitzendingen waarin Paul Whiteman te horen was, al heb ik daar geen bewijzen voor gevonden. Voor zover ik heb kunnen nagaan, is deze samenwerking nooit vastgelegd, al zou het zomaar kunnen dat één van de radiotranscripties uit die tijd bewaard gebleven is.

Paul Whiteman was toendertijd te horen in een tiental radio programma's zoals The Old Gold - Paul Whiteman Hour ( CBS Network); gesponsorde programma's voor NBC Radio Network voor Allied Quality Paints, de General Motors-Pontiac divisie of voor het sigarettenmerk Lucky Strike.

Eén van de zanggroepen, die ik wel tegenkwam in de radiouitzendingen van Paul Whiteman waren de Brox Sisters, zoals in een uitzending van 10 december, 1929. Kathlyn, Dagmar and Lorraine Brox begonnen hun zangcarriere begin jaren twintig en zijn bijvoorbeeld te zien in de film van Paul Whiteman: King of Jazz. Ik vroeg Judye waarom de Paull Sisters zich zo noemden en niet de Brock Sisters, zoals je zou verwachten. Zou "Paull" iets te maken hebben met Paul Whiteman? Hun vader heette geen Paul, maar Burtis Brock, dus dat was geen aanwijzing. I'm not sure why they chose "Paull Sisters" because they were using that name when the sang with Phil Spitalny

and that was before Paul Whiteman. ( = Ik heb geen idee waarom ze zich de Paull Sisters noemden, en omdat ze die naam al gebruikten toen ze bij Phil Spitalny zongen, lijkt een verwijzing naar Paul Whiteman onjuist). I do know that there was early reference the singing as the Brock Sisters, but my mother said there was another singing group at that time known as the Brock Sisters and they didn't want to be confused with them. ( = Ik weet dat ze zich in het begin de Brock Sisters noemden, maar mijn moeder vertelde me dat er nog een zanggroep was die zich de Brock (sic) Sisters noemden en we wilden daarmee niet verwisseld worden). I'm sure that they used the double "L" in Paul to be sure it was considered a surname. ( = Ik ben er zeker van dat ze de extra "L" achter Paull gebruikten om aan te geven dat het niet om een voornaam ging). That would have been my mother's flair ( = Dat was nou iets, typisch voor mijn moeder). Ik denk dat Julia Brock doelde op de eerder genoemde Brox Sisters, een naam die je hetzelfde uitspreekt als Brock.

Toen de Tweede Wereldoorlog uitbrak verhuisden Julia en Ruth terug naar Chicago met hun moeder. In 1946 trouwde Julia met een man, die teruggekeerd was als soldaat en optrad in een rondtrekkende groep, die stuntwagens reed. Die groep heette de Jimmy Lynch's Death Dodgers, één van de tientallen stuntcarshows, die de VS in die dagen telde. That show was one of the first "car thrill shows" in the United States and other like Joey Chitwood copied Jimmy Lynch's Death Dodgers. (= Die show was één van de eerste "car thrill shows" in de Verenigde Staten en anderen, zoals Joey Chitwood kopieerden gewoon hun optredens)

Ruth is nooit getrouwd geweest en overleed in 1971 - Julia overleed in augustus 2009, 104 jaar oud.

In december 1929 bereidde de DURIUM PRODUCTS CORPORATION de start voor van een nieuwe, revolutionaire onbreekbare 78-toerenplaat, gemaakt van karton. Deze platen werden vooral bekend door een wekelijkse uitgave, genaamd de Hit of the Week Record, die in februari 1930 van start ging en twee en een half jaar bestond. Later werd dit groepje abusievelijk op een hoes bestempeld als een damkvartett ( Zweeds voor dameskwartet), maar het klonk toch echt als een zangduo. Dankzij Bill Schoerner kreeg ik wat informatie over hen en foto's. Julia was de oudste - geboren in 1905 in Conrad, Iowa als Julia Brock en haar zus Ruth volgde twee jaar later. Ze gingen na hun schooltijd naar Chicago om les in zang te krijgen en gingen al snel professioneel optreden bij het orkest van Philip Spitalny. Ze noemden zich De Paull Sisters, en dat ging zelfs zo ver dat ze zich in advertenties Julia Paull en Ruth Paull noemden, terwijl ze eigenlijk Brock heetten.

Philip Spitalny, beter bekend als Phil Spitalny, werd geboren in Odessa in Rusland in oktober 1890 en speelde klarinet in zijn geboorteland. Daarmee verdiende hij zijn brood, voordat hij, na de Russische Revolutie zijn vaderland omruilde voor Amerika. Hj ging in Cleveland wonen, waar hij een dansband oprichtte. Zijn eerste platen zijn opgenomen in Cleveland in maart 1924. Hij verhuisde al snel richting New York en daar nam hij twee nummers op met de Paull Sisters voor Edison ( 31 mei 1929), gevolgd door nog een paar opnamesessies in de zomer van dat jaar. De Paull Sisters hebben verschillende platen opgenomen voor Edison met deze band en in februari 1930 vinden we Phil Spitalny terug als leider van het pas gestarte platenlabel Hit of the week.

De eerste opnamen voor Durium met de Paull Sisters en Phil Spitalny's Music is van oktober 1931 en getiteld Guilty en Goodnight Sweetheart; De Eton Boys bestonden uit zangers en zij zongen het korte extra nummer op de plaat vol: She'll Be Comin' Round The Mountain en In The Shade of the Old Apple Tree. Deze zgn. Hit of the week platen werden gepromoot als: "the five-minute Hit-of-the-Week with almost twice the playing time of the average record at your news-dealer's next Thursday" (= De vijf-minuten Hit of the week platen, met bijna de dubbele speelduur dan gewone platen - elke donderdag bij je krantenkiosk). Omdat er geen uitgeschreven bladmuziek was ( stock arrangements) voor nummers langer dan 3 en een halve minuut ( de normale speelduur van een 78-toerenplaat) werd de resterende tijd gewoon opgevuld met een kort deuntje. Kijk maar eens op de Durium discografie voor deze sessie.

Er werden waarschijnlijk meer opnamen gemaakt tijdens deze opnamesessie, die Durium gebruikte voor de export naar Europa, waar een Engelse firma plannen had om ook soortgelijke plaat te maken, die wekelijks de laatste Hits zou brengen. Als opstapje zorgde DURIUM (US) (Hoofdletters) voor kant-en-klare matrijzen voor de Europese durium (gb) (kleine letters). Er werden opnamen gemaakt samen met de populaire zanger / crooner Chick Bullock. Om moeilijkheden met rechten te vermijden ( Chick Bullock immers zat vast aan ARC-Records) gebruikte Durum de schuilnaam Jack Norman voor het orkest van Spitalny; de namen van Chick Bullock en de Paull Sisters werden gewoon niet vermeld op de in Amerika geperste DURIUM platen - wel op de in Slough ( bij Londen) geperste durium exemplaren en de Franse Sefono-labels. Op een Zweedse Veckans SKIVA hoes ( nr. 6), die ik in mijn verzameling heb, vond ik bij de omschrijving van de Hit of the Week ..... : Foxtrot: I'm keepin' company "Jag följer med dig!"

In de als een tijdschrift vermomde hoes ( Durium platen werden immers bij de krantenboer verkocht) uit ca. 1934 worden de Paull Sisters omschreven als: "Refrängsången utföres av en populär damkvartett - Paull Sisters - som utgör ett raffinerat inslag i schlagern" ( = Het refrein wordt gezongen door een viertal dames - de Paull Sisters - een subtiele vertolking); blijkbaar waren de dames in 1934 in Zweden, ondanks dat ze een "populär" zanggroep genoemd werden, daar niet erg bekend, anders zou men wel geweten hebben dat het damkvartett gewoon uit twee personen bestond.

A year ago I posted a contribution about the Paull Sisters. I had found its name on a Hit of the week cover released in the fall of 1931 and that was all info I could find. Thanks to Bill Schoerner I received some additional information and a few photos and advertisements in which the two girls were introduced. Bill Schoerner is fascinated by these vocal groups and posted a series of blogs concerning the William Sisters.Within a few months most living relatives of these William Sisters were located and a lot of unknown information could be traced. And now, it seems .....history repeats itself ........ A few weeks ago I was contacted by Judye Talbot who happens to be the daughter of Julia. Julia was one of the Paull Sisters, together with her sister Ruth. Julia passed away last August 104 years old. Thanks to Judye I can show you some new photos and news paper clippings from Julia's scrap book and some new information, that was unknown up to now. Today the first part about their cooperation with Phil Spitalny.

Julia was born in 1905 in Conrad, Iowa as Julia Brock and her sister followed two years later named Ruth. They went to Chicago to study singing and soon they sung professionally with Phil(ip) Spitalny's Music as the Paull Sisters. It is weird that they were even labeled in advertisements as Julia Paull and Ruth Paull, although their real name was Brock.

Phil Spitalny, born in Odessa Russia, October 1890 played the clarinet in his native country before he immigrated, after the Russian Revolution, to the States (Cleveland). Here he became known as a dance band leader. His first recordings were made in Cleveland, March 1924. He moved to New York City a year later and recorded two songs with the Paull Sisters for Edison on the 31st of May, 1929 followed by several other recording sessions in the summer of 1929. The Paull Sisters made several recordings for Edison with that band and in February 1930 he recorded for the new born cardboard Hit of the week label.

The first Durium session with the Paull Sisters and Phil Spitalny's Music was scheduled October 1931 and titled Guilty and Goodnight Sweetheart; the Eton Boys were a male vocal group also present on this session, responsible for the small extra tracks She'll Be Comin' Round The Mountain and In The Shade of the Old Apple Tree. These Hit of the week records were promoted as "the five-minute Hit-of-the-Week with almost twice the playing time of the average record at your news-dealer's next Thursday". These small 1.5 minutes tracks were used to complete the extra playing time.

It is likely that, during the same session, recordings for Durium were made for export to Europe together with Chick Bullock - the popular US crooner. To prevent problems with legal contracts and things like that ( Chick Bullock was under exclusively contract for ARC), Durium used the pseudonym Jack Norman and his Orchestra for the Phil Spitalny group. The names of the Paull Sisters and Chick Bullock were skipped on the US pressings ( DURIUM), but on the European pressings by durium ( small letters) and Sefono labels the names were mentioned. On a Swedish Veckans SKIVA sleeve nr. 6, I have in my collection, one of those recordings: I'm keepin' company" is described as: Foxtrot: I'm keepin' company "Jag följer med dig! ".

In the liner notes ( mind I'm talking about a record sleeve from ca. 1934 !!) the Paull Sisters are labeled as a quartet: it reads: "Refrängsången utföres av en populär damkvartett - Paull Sisters - som utgör ett raffinerat inslag i schlagern" ( = The vocal refrain is performed by a popular female quartet - Paull Sisters, - a sophisticated sequence of the recording ). Mind that this sleeve was released in 1934 for a 1931 recording and there were no reasons anymore to suppress the names of the Paull Sisters and Chick Bullock but it is weird to learn that the Paull Sisters were labeled as a quartet.

When you have listened carefully you must have heard tunes come by like Keep Sweeping the Cobwebs off the Moon, Changes, Mighty Lak’ a Rose, Shaking the Blues Away and the good old Tiger Rag, but to be honest ..... I was fascinated by all those girls playing in this not so common setting; a 1920s dance band. These All-Girl orchestras were popular in the 1920s and born out of the minstrel groups late 1900s, where women appeared in bands like the Madame Rentz's Female Minstrels or the Colored Female Brass Band. During the change of the century women were active at home, in the classical repertoire playing the piano, the violin or the harp. Looking to these women, playing saxophones in all sizes ( even a baritone sax), brass instruments, like the tuba, I wonder how the director of such a band selected all these girls with their special qualities - as a genius on their instrument or as a female-as-sex object....... Okay, I agree, the lady on the clarinet better could have used her stick playbacked and the numerous of accordions, hidden behind their stools, feel commically. One of the popular all-women bands of the 1920s was the Parisian Redheads, later renamed as the Bricktops. The Parisean Redheads ( thanks to their red heads)

In the book Stormy Weather, The Music and lives of a century of jazzwomen by Linda Dahl is a great source when you love to understand these bands.
In the Depression years there were a lot of those all-women orchestras, founded to make money and, as the book reads, Women bandleaders and players were picked for their physical assets as much as for their musicianship: hence the group billed as "The Band with a Bosom".One of the regular band leaders of the Hit of the week orchestras was Phil Spitalny who founded during the late 1930s and 1940s an All-Girl Band which became very famous. I found a fragment of this band, made late 1930s I guess, where they play the Tiger Rag. It is a pity that the music is very soft, but the fragment is so rare and special that I love to share it with you. So open your speakers .... and enjoy.

These typically phenomenon of All-Women Bands became popular in the 1940s, but it was, like the decades before, most vaudeville and music to dance they played. Of course there were bands that played jazz or women that became great jazz instrumentalists ( I am not talking of women vocalists now), like Lil Hardin, Emma Barrett (I must talk about her in a next blog sometimes), Beryl Booker or Marian McPartland to name some known and less known women in jazz.

I found a fragment from a typically All-Women Band from the 1940s too, the band of Thelma White and her All Girl Orchestra in a film from ca. 1946. (Mind the sound level)

Another phenomenon that needs some more study, in my opinion, are the so-called Sisters and Brothers vocal groups, vocal groups, of men or women who are related to each other by family. Well known are the Mills Brothers, the Boswell Sisters and the Andrew Sisters, but there were numerous others, most of them now almost forgotten, like The Brian Sisters, Ponce Sisters, Pickens Sisters, Keller Sisters, Bronx Sisters, Trix Sisters, Williams Sisters, MacDowell Sisters, Zurik Sisters and Kordt Sisters. I also could make a list from brother vocal groups, although it seems that that list is much shorter. Vrouwen horen thuis - in de keuken - hun recht is hun aanrecht - Ze horen piano, viool of dwarsfluit te spelen, de kinderen op te voeden .......Ouderwetse gedachten, die al lang achterhaald zijn .... zelfs in de vorige eeuw. Je komt er meer over te weten in deze bijdrage over vrouwen-in-de-jazz.

The Ingenues spelen in opdracht van de Universiteit van Wisconsin in een koeienstal in de hoop dat het de melkproductie zou stimuleren.

Een paar weken geleden postte Jo een bijdrage, getiteld Vibraphonia waarin hij een filmfragment liet zien van een vrouwelijke marimbaband bijgestaan door Reg Kehoe, die Larry Clinton's A Study In Brown rond 1940. Een paar dagen geleden wees Enrico B. me op een ander fragment van The Ingénues, een all-female band, een band die helemaal uit vrouwen bestaat, in een film uit 1928. Ze spelen daar een serie titels die in die tijd populair waren. Geniet ervan.

Als je goed geluisterd hebt zou je nu wellicht de gespeelde nummers herkent hebben: Keep sweeping the cobwebs off the moon, Changes, Mighty lak’ a Rose, Shaking The Blues Away and the good old Tiger Rag, maar eerlijk gezegd heb ik het moeten opzoeken want ik was gefascineerd door wat ik te zien kreeg; al dat vrouwelijk schoons in een niet alledaagse setting. Deze All-Girl orkesten waren populair in de jaren twintig en tijdens de Depressie en waren voortgekomen vanuit de traditie van de Minstrelgroepen, waarin al voor 1900 vrouwen dit soort groepen vormden: the Madame Rentz's Female Minstrels en the Colored Female Brass Band zijn daar voorbeelden van. Tijdens de eeuwwisseling, rond 1900, waren de vrouwen voornamelijk thuis actief, en als ze muziek maakten dan was dat klassieke muziek op piano, harp of viool. Als je naar deze vrouwen kijkt, die alle soorten saxofoons spelen (tot de baritonsax toe). blaasinstrumenten waaronder de tuba, dan vraag ik me af hoe de dirigent deze dames heeft gevonden en op welke gronden hij ze heeft geselecteerd: op het feit dat ze een specifiek instrument konden bespelen of op hun vrouw-zijn. Okay, ik geef toe, in het geval van de klarinettiste is dat overduidelijk; zij zou er beter aan doen te playbacken en al die accordeons, die ineens van onder de stoel te voorschijn komen, maakt het geheel tot een haast komische act. Eén van die all-women bands uit de jaren twintig waren de Parisian Redheads, later hernoemd als the Bricktops.

In het boek Stormy Weather, The Music and lives of a century of jazzwomen, geschreven door Linda Dahl staat onder andere de geschiedenis van deze bands beschreven.

Tijdens de Depressietijd (begin jaren dertig) zien we een toename van dit soort orkesten, opgericht, zo zegt het boek, to make money (= om geld mee te verdienen). Women bandleaders and players were picked for their physical assets as much as for their musicianship: hence the group billed as "The Band with a Bosom". ( = Vrouwelijke bandleidsters en spelers werden zowel uitgezocht op hun uiterlijk als op hun muzikale kwaliteiten: wat te denken van een groep genaamd Band-met-een-boezem). Eén van de vaste bandleiders, die voor Durium platen maakten was Phil Spitalny, weliswaar een man, maar dat belemmerde hem niet een All-Girl band op te richten die in de jaren dertig en veertig heel populair werd. Ik vond een fragment uit de jaren dertig waarin hij te zien en te horen is met zijn band in de Tiger Rag. Helaas is het geluid erg zacht, dus zet je luidsprekers open; het fragment is zo bijzonder en zeldzaam dat ik het jullie niet wilde onthouden.

Dit typische fenomeen van all-women bands was ook populair in de veertiger jaren, maar dan is de muziek veranderd in meer swing en jive muziek. Toch komt het peil van de meeste damesorkesten uit de eerste helft van de Twintigste eeuw niet uit boven het niveau van vaudeville of amusementsorkest. Natuurlijk waren er ook vrouwen die wel jazz speelden op hun instrumenten ( zangeressen lat ik hier buiten beschouwing), zoals Lil Hardin, Emma Barrett (ik kom zeker nog eens op haar terug), Beryl Booker of Marian McPartland om maar eens even wat bekende en minder bekende namen te noemen.

Een andere verschijnsel rond vrouwen-in-de-jazz waren de Sisters Trios, met de mannelijke tegenhanger de Brother Quartets; zanggroepen die een familierelatie hadden. Wie kent niet de Mills Brothers, the Boswell Sisters en de Andrew Sisters? Maar stiller wordt het als we meer namen willen; namen als The Brian Sisters, Ponce Sisters, Pickens Sisters, Keller Sisters, Bronx Sisters, Trix Sisters, Williams Sisters, MacDowell Sisters, Zurik Sisters en de Kordt Sisters - allemaal nu vergeten zanggroepen. Zo'n lijst kan eer natuurlijk ook gemaakt worden met Brothers Groups ... maar die wordt een stuk kleiner. Is er iemand onder de lezers die kennis opgebouwd heeft over dit soort vergeten vrouwen-zang-groepen? Het zou mooi zijn als we daar eens aandacht aan konden besteden. This small cardboard record is titled Jingle Bells and is one of the two recently discovered Durium records. It was recorded by Phil Spitalny's Music. It is one of the two known small cardboard records that were published by the Durium Products Inc. New York in December 1931. The other record is titled Silent Night. It is well possible that more records in this Merry Christmas series were published by Durium, but up to now, I only found these two items.
Both records were offered me during the July 2005 annual convention of the IAJRC ( International Association of Jazz Record Collectors) in Copenhagen (Denmark). When I saw both small records, I suspected both were unknown up to now, and that was true.

Durium Products Inc. was a record company, incorporated into the Irwin-Wasy Advertising Agency, a publicity agency managed by Chicago stockholders. This Durium company released the well known Hit of the week records and numerous records for export to Europe or Latin America. But as the parent company was an advertisement agency it also published numerous advertisement and custom records. Thanks to Kurt Nauck, who sent me his Durium notes, and a lot of record collectors, world wide, I could finally make a list of these cardboard records and publish it in my Durium Advertisement and Custom Records Discography ( now out of print ). The US records are now available in a free online discography. What about these small Christmas records? Both were free gifts for the Junior Home Magazine, a magazine for parents and children. Two other small Durium records, titled To All Parents: An Important Message and Christmas Suggestion, were made as promos for this magazine. A spoken sales talk on the Christmas Suggestion record says : A yearly subscription to Junior Home, the magazine for parents and children is a very finest Christmas gift you can select for young children and their mothers. Such a gift carries a loving remembrance each month for a whole year. It is a gift that children on your list will love and the parents appreciate. It will make them happy and makes you glad when you see the pleasure and benefit resulting for your so thoughtful gifts. A very attractive Christmas card in full colors with your name careful written in as the giver will be send free when requested. One subscription costs $ 2,50. Two or more gift subscriptions only $ 2,00 each. What can you give that will go so far and give so much pleasure for a whole year as a subscription to Junior Home magazine.

It seems as if these small 4-inch (10 cm ) Merry Chirstmas records were included into the December cover of the Junior Home Magazine.
Phil Spitalny was the director of the Durium studio orchestras during 1931 and 1932 and he recorded a lot of recordings for Durium. He was born in Odessa ( Rusland ) in November 1890 and passed away in October 1970. He got some fame as the leader of a sweet band, that contained only women -an All Women Band, famous in those days. He had his own radio program during the mid 1930s, titled The Hour of Charme in which his wife Evelyn performed as Evelyn and her Magic violin. They retired late 1940s and lived in Miami Beach for years. They recorded for Durium, but also for Victor, Brunswick, Perfect, Columbia and Vogue.The vocal group you hear are The Eton Boys, a quartet featuring Earl Smith, Art Gentry, Jack Day and Chas.Day.

Phil Spitalny also recorded the tune Jingle Bells in November 1931 together with Time On My Hands, which was released as a weekly Hit of the week record on Thursday ( the regular day to publish the Hit of the week) the 17th of December 1931, with Jingle Bells as an extra to complete the extra playing times of the average record.

All records, mentioned in this blog, the small advertisement records with Christmas suggestion, the Junior Home Magazine promos are reissued for the very first time in the third volume of The Complete Hit of the Week Recordings (Arch 3004) by Archeophone.

Dit kleine kartonnen plaatje is getiteld Jingle Bells en is één van de twee onlangs ontdekte Durium plaatjes. Het werd opgenomen door Phil Spitalny's Music. Het is één van de twee plaatjes, die door de Durium Products Inc. New York in December 1931 uitgebracht werden. Het andere is getiteld: Silent Night. Het is goed mogelijk dat er meer van dit soort plaatjes uitgebracht zijn in de serie Merry Christmas; tot nu toe zijn er twee boven water gekomen. Beide plaatjes kreeg ik aangeboden tijdens de jaarlijkse conventie van de IAJRC ( International Association of Jazz Record Collectors) in Kopenhagen (Denemarken ) in juli 2005. Toen ik ze zag, dacht ik al dat ze wel eens onbekend zouden kunnen zijn en dat vermoeden bleek juist.

Dit Durium bedrijf bracht ook de bekende Hit of the week platen uit en platen voor export naar Europa en Latijns-Amerika. Aangezien het moederbedrijf een reclamebureau was, brachten ze ook reclame- en gelegenheidsplaatjes uit. Dankzij Kurt Nauck, wiens aantekeningen ik kreeg, en een handvol verzamelaars, uit de hele wereld, kon ik deze reclameplaatjes beschrijven en publiceren in mijn Durium Advertisment and Custom Records Discography ( nu uitverkocht). Phil Spitalny was de leider van de Durium studio orkesten uit die periode 1931 - 1932 en hij nam veel platen op voor Durium. Hij maakte naam als leider van een zgn. sweetband, waarvan de leden allemaal vrouwen waren; een All-Women Band. Hij had halverwege de jaren dertig een eigen radioprogramma getiteld The Hour of Charme waarin zijn vrouw Evelyn optrad als Evelyn and her Magic violin. Ze gingen eind jaren veertig rentenieren in Miami, Florida. Ze namen niet alleen platen op voor Durium, maar ook voor Victor, Brunswick, Perfect, Columbia en Vogue. De zanggroep die je hoort waren de Eton Boys, een zangkwartet bestaande uit Earl Smith, Art Gentry, Jack Day en Chas. Day.

Phil Spitalny nam het nummer Jingle Bells ook op in november 1931 samen met Time On My Hands, welke beide uitgebracht werden op een wekelijkse Hit of the week plaat op donderdag ( de dag dat Hit of the weeks in de krantenkiosk lagen) 17 december 1931, waarbij Jingle Bells diende als (gratis) opvulling voor de twee minuten extra speelduur.

Alle platen, die in deze bijdrage genoemd zijn, zijn nu voor het eerst heruitgebracht op het derde deel van The Complete Hit of the Week Recordings (Arch 3004) door Archeophone.
