Een jaar geleden plaatste ik een bijdrage over de Paull Sisters. Ik had een naam gevonden op de hoes van een oude Hit of the week 78-toerenplaat uitgebracht in de herfst van 1931 en dat was alle informatie die ik had. Dankzij Bill Schoerner kreeg ik informatie over hen en foto's. Bill Schoerner is gefascineerd door dit soort zanggroepen en plaatste eerder dit jaar een schitterende serie blogs over de Williams Sisters, die een heleboel informatie losmaakte, dankzij de reacties die we van familieleden ontvingen. En nu, de geschiedenis lijkt zich te herhalen ..... ik werd benaderd door Judye Talbot, die de dochter van Julia blijkt te zijn. Julia was één van de Paull Sisters, samen met haar zus Ruth. Julia overleed in augustus van dit jaar, 104 jaar oud. Dankzij Judye, die me informatie en foto's uit haar moeders plakboeken stuurde, kan nu, voor het eerst, hun levensverhaal verteld worden. Vandaag het tweede deel getiteld: Stars of Radioland.

Advertentie waarin ze Julia and Ruth Paull (sic) genoemd worden. Grappig is dat er verwezen wordt naar de eerste TV-uitzendingen, die in de VS begin jaren dertig plaats vonden.

Ik ben ervan overtuigd, dat de Paull Sisters ook op andere Duriumplaten te horen zijn - bedenk dat er heel wat is opgenomen door anonieme studiomusici voor Durium, vaak met Phil Spitalny of Bert Hirsch als leider, met van die vage namen als the "Durium" Orchestra.
Eén zo'n opname, waarin de Paull Sisters waarschijnlijk te beluisteren zijn, is dit kleine kartonnen duriumplaatje, het kerstplaatje, dat Phil Spitalny opnam om uitgebracht te worden rond kerstmis 1931.
Advertentie voor een concert met het beroemde "the king himself" Paul Whiteman orkest op 6 mei 1931 in Appleton. De Paull Sisters worden hier omschreven als Court Harmonizers.

Phil Spitalny was een veelgevraagd bandleider voor radiouitzendingen zoals het programma Tea Dansante dat elke werkdag op NBC Network werd uitgezonden. Ik vind het leuk om nog een nummer te laten horen van het Phil Spitalny orkest met The Paull Sisters uit september 1929: Bottoms Up ( hierme wordt bedoeld het leeggieten van flessen met alcoholische dranken ten tijde van de drooglegging).

Rond diezelfde tijd zongen de twee zusjes bij het grote Paul Whiteman orkest. Ze moeten gezongen hebben in radiouitzendingen waarin Paul Whiteman te horen was, al heb ik daar geen bewijzen voor gevonden. Voor zover ik heb kunnen nagaan, is deze samenwerking nooit vastgelegd, al zou het zomaar kunnen dat één van de radiotranscripties uit die tijd bewaard gebleven is.

Paul Whiteman was toendertijd te horen in een tiental radio programma's zoals The Old Gold - Paul Whiteman Hour ( CBS Network); gesponsorde programma's voor NBC Radio Network voor Allied Quality Paints, de General Motors-Pontiac divisie of voor het sigarettenmerk Lucky Strike.

Eén van de zanggroepen, die ik wel tegenkwam in de radiouitzendingen van Paul Whiteman waren de Brox Sisters, zoals in een uitzending van 10 december, 1929. Kathlyn, Dagmar and Lorraine Brox begonnen hun zangcarriere begin jaren twintig en zijn bijvoorbeeld te zien in de film van Paul Whiteman: King of Jazz. Ik vroeg Judye waarom de Paull Sisters zich zo noemden en niet de Brock Sisters, zoals je zou verwachten. Zou "Paull" iets te maken hebben met Paul Whiteman? Hun vader heette geen Paul, maar Burtis Brock, dus dat was geen aanwijzing. I'm not sure why they chose "Paull Sisters" because they were using that name when the sang with Phil Spitalny

and that was before Paul Whiteman. ( = Ik heb geen idee waarom ze zich de Paull Sisters noemden, en omdat ze die naam al gebruikten toen ze bij Phil Spitalny zongen, lijkt een verwijzing naar Paul Whiteman onjuist). I do know that there was early reference the singing as the Brock Sisters, but my mother said there was another singing group at that time known as the Brock Sisters and they didn't want to be confused with them. ( = Ik weet dat ze zich in het begin de Brock Sisters noemden, maar mijn moeder vertelde me dat er nog een zanggroep was die zich de Brock (sic) Sisters noemden en we wilden daarmee niet verwisseld worden). I'm sure that they used the double "L" in Paul to be sure it was considered a surname. ( = Ik ben er zeker van dat ze de extra "L" achter Paull gebruikten om aan te geven dat het niet om een voornaam ging). That would have been my mother's flair ( = Dat was nou iets, typisch voor mijn moeder). Ik denk dat Julia Brock doelde op de eerder genoemde Brox Sisters, een naam die je hetzelfde uitspreekt als Brock.

Toen de Tweede Wereldoorlog uitbrak verhuisden Julia en Ruth terug naar Chicago met hun moeder. In 1946 trouwde Julia met een man, die teruggekeerd was als soldaat en optrad in een rondtrekkende groep, die stuntwagens reed. Die groep heette de Jimmy Lynch's Death Dodgers, één van de tientallen stuntcarshows, die de VS in die dagen telde. That show was one of the first "car thrill shows" in the United States and other like Joey Chitwood copied Jimmy Lynch's Death Dodgers. (= Die show was één van de eerste "car thrill shows" in de Verenigde Staten en anderen, zoals Joey Chitwood kopieerden gewoon hun optredens)

Ruth is nooit getrouwd geweest en overleed in 1971 - Julia overleed in augustus 2009, 104 jaar oud.

In december 1929 bereidde de DURIUM PRODUCTS CORPORATION de start voor van een nieuwe, revolutionaire onbreekbare 78-toerenplaat, gemaakt van karton. A year ago I posted a contribution about the Paull Sisters. I had found its name on a Hit of the week cover released in the fall of 1931 and that was all info I could find. Thanks to Bill Schoerner I received some additional information and a few photos and advertisements in which the two girls were introduced. Bill Schoerner is fascinated by these vocal groups and posted a series of blogs concerning the William Sisters. Within a few months most living relatives of these William Sisters were located and a lot of unknown information could be traced. And now, it seems - history repeats itself ........ A few weeks ago I was contacted by Judye Talbot who happens to be the daughter of Julia. Julia was one of the Paull Sisters, together with her sister Ruth. Julia passed away last August 104 years old. Thanks to Judye I can show you some new photos and news paper clippings from Julia's scrap book and some new information, that was unknown up to now. The first part was titled: A forgotten Vocal Duo - the second part is published now: Stars of Radioland.

I'm convinced that the Paull Sisters were involved in more Durium recordings. Mind that the Phil Spitalny band, or the anonymous Durium Orchestras were just studio bands directed by Phil Spitalny or Bert Hirsch.
This small cardboard record made by Durium was released in December 1931. The vocal group, singing Silent Night, could well be The Paull Sisters.

Phil Spitalny was also a sought after band leader for radio broadcasts like the daily broadcasts ( except in the weekends) titled Tea Dansante for NBC Network. Love to share with you the tune Bottoms Up by Phil Spitalny's Orchestra (September 1929). The title has to do with the prohibition. The bottles with booze were emptied.

What a great (almost forgotten style of) music !!

Around the same period they performed with the Paul Whiteman orchestra, labeled in the advertisement showed as Court Harmonizers, but I didn't found any records or transcriptions made with this famous band.

They must have performed on several radio shows with Paul Whiteman, but up to now I didn't found names of shows in which they participated; Paul Whiteman had dozens of radio programs during the 1930s like The Old Gold - Paul Whiteman Hour on CBS Network; programs on NBC Radio Network sponsored by Allied Quality Paints, GM-Pontiac division or Lucky Strike.

themselves the Paull Sisters and not the Brock Sisters. I'm not sure why they chose "Paull Sisters" because they were using that name when the sang with Phil Spitalny and that was before Paul Whiteman. I do know that there was early reference the singing as the Brock Sisters, but my mother said there was another singing group at that time known as the Brock Sisters and they didn't want to be confused with them. Well - Reading her explanation this must have been the vocal group her mother mentioned: Brox Sisters.

When the Second World War started Julia and Ruth moved back to Chicago with their mother. In 1946 Julia married with a man who had been a soldier and drove stunt cars with Jimmy Lynch's Death Dodgers, one of the dozens of stunt cars shows, that toured the States in those days.

Ruth never married and passed away in 1971 - Julia passed away last August, 2009 - 104 years old.

Later werd dit groepje abusievelijk op een hoes bestempeld als een damkvartett ( Zweeds voor dameskwartet), maar het klonk toch echt als een zangduo. Dankzij Bill Schoerner kreeg ik wat informatie over hen en foto's. Julia was de oudste - geboren in 1905 in Conrad, Iowa als Julia Brock en haar zus Ruth volgde twee jaar later. Ze gingen na hun schooltijd naar Chicago om les in zang te krijgen en gingen al snel professioneel optreden bij het orkest van Philip Spitalny. Ze noemden zich De Paull Sisters, en dat ging zelfs zo ver dat ze zich in advertenties Julia Paull en Ruth Paull noemden, terwijl ze eigenlijk Brock heetten.

Philip Spitalny, beter bekend als Phil Spitalny, werd geboren in Odessa in Rusland in oktober 1890 en speelde klarinet in zijn geboorteland. Daarmee verdiende hij zijn brood, voordat hij, na de Russische Revolutie zijn vaderland omruilde voor Amerika. Hj ging in Cleveland wonen, waar hij een dansband oprichtte. Zijn eerste platen zijn opgenomen in Cleveland in maart 1924. Hij verhuisde al snel richting New York en daar nam hij twee nummers op met de Paull Sisters voor Edison ( 31 mei 1929), gevolgd door nog een paar opnamesessies in de zomer van dat jaar. De Paull Sisters hebben verschillende platen opgenomen voor Edison met deze band en in februari 1930 vinden we Phil Spitalny terug als leider van het pas gestarte platenlabel Hit of the week.

De eerste opnamen voor Durium met de Paull Sisters en Phil Spitalny's Music is van oktober 1931 en getiteld Guilty en Goodnight Sweetheart; De Eton Boys bestonden uit zangers en zij zongen het korte extra nummer op de plaat vol: She'll Be Comin' Round The Mountain en In The Shade of the Old Apple Tree. Deze zgn. Hit of the week platen werden gepromoot als: "the five-minute Hit-of-the-Week with almost twice the playing time of the average record at your news-dealer's next Thursday" (= De vijf-minuten Hit of the week platen, met bijna de dubbele speelduur dan gewone platen - elke donderdag bij je krantenkiosk). Omdat er geen uitgeschreven bladmuziek was ( stock arrangements) voor nummers langer dan 3 en een halve minuut ( de normale speelduur van een 78-toerenplaat) werd de resterende tijd gewoon opgevuld met een kort deuntje. Kijk maar eens op de Durium discografie voor deze sessie.

Er werden waarschijnlijk meer opnamen gemaakt tijdens deze opnamesessie, die Durium gebruikte voor de export naar Europa, waar een Engelse firma plannen had om ook soortgelijke plaat te maken, die wekelijks de laatste Hits zou brengen. Als opstapje zorgde DURIUM (US) (Hoofdletters) voor kant-en-klare matrijzen voor de Europese durium (gb) (kleine letters). Er werden opnamen gemaakt samen met de populaire zanger / crooner Chick Bullock. Om moeilijkheden met rechten te vermijden ( Chick Bullock immers zat vast aan ARC-Records) gebruikte Durum de schuilnaam Jack Norman voor het orkest van Spitalny; de namen van Chick Bullock en de Paull Sisters werden gewoon niet vermeld op de in Amerika geperste DURIUM platen - wel op de in Slough ( bij Londen) geperste durium exemplaren en de Franse Sefono-labels. Op een Zweedse Veckans SKIVA hoes ( nr. 6), die ik in mijn verzameling heb, vond ik bij de omschrijving van de Hit of the Week ..... : Foxtrot: I'm keepin' company "Jag följer med dig!"

In de als een tijdschrift vermomde hoes ( Durium platen werden immers bij de krantenboer verkocht) uit ca. 1934 worden de Paull Sisters omschreven als: "Refrängsången utföres av en populär damkvartett - Paull Sisters - som utgör ett raffinerat inslag i schlagern" ( = Het refrein wordt gezongen door een viertal dames - de Paull Sisters - een subtiele vertolking); blijkbaar waren de dames in 1934 in Zweden, ondanks dat ze een "populär" zanggroep genoemd werden, daar niet erg bekend, anders zou men wel geweten hebben dat het damkvartett gewoon uit twee personen bestond.

Ik heb, uiteraard, Judye gevraagd, waarom de twee zusjes zichzelf De Paull Sisters noemden ............ hierover meer de volgende keer, wanneer we hun samenwerking bij Paul Whiteman aanroeren in: De Paull Sisters: De jaren dertig.

A year ago I posted a contribution about the Paull Sisters. I had found its name on a Hit of the week cover released in the fall of 1931 and that was all info I could find. Thanks to Bill Schoerner I received some additional information and a few photos and advertisements in which the two girls were introduced. Bill Schoerner is fascinated by these vocal groups and posted a series of blogs concerning the William Sisters.Within a few months most living relatives of these William Sisters were located and a lot of unknown information could be traced. And now, it seems .....history repeats itself ........ A few weeks ago I was contacted by Judye Talbot who happens to be the daughter of Julia. Julia was one of the Paull Sisters, together with her sister Ruth. Julia passed away last August 104 years old. Thanks to Judye I can show you some new photos and news paper clippings from Julia's scrap book and some new information, that was unknown up to now. Today the first part about their cooperation with Phil Spitalny.

Julia was born in 1905 in Conrad, Iowa as Julia Brock and her sister followed two years later named Ruth. They went to Chicago to study singing and soon they sung professionally with Phil(ip) Spitalny's Music as the Paull Sisters. It is weird that they were even labeled in advertisements as Julia Paull and Ruth Paull, although their real name was Brock.

Phil Spitalny, born in Odessa Russia, October 1890 played the clarinet in his native country before he immigrated, after the Russian Revolution, to the States (Cleveland). Here he became known as a dance band leader. His first recordings were made in Cleveland, March 1924. He moved to New York City a year later and recorded two songs with the Paull Sisters for Edison on the 31st of May, 1929 followed by several other recording sessions in the summer of 1929. The Paull Sisters made several recordings for Edison with that band and in February 1930 he recorded for the new born cardboard Hit of the week label.

The first Durium session with the Paull Sisters and Phil Spitalny's Music was scheduled October 1931 and titled Guilty and Goodnight Sweetheart; the Eton Boys were a male vocal group also present on this session, responsible for the small extra tracks She'll Be Comin' Round The Mountain and In The Shade of the Old Apple Tree. These Hit of the week records were promoted as "the five-minute Hit-of-the-Week with almost twice the playing time of the average record at your news-dealer's next Thursday". These small 1.5 minutes tracks were used to complete the extra playing time.

It is likely that, during the same session, recordings for Durium were made for export to Europe together with Chick Bullock - the popular US crooner. To prevent problems with legal contracts and things like that ( Chick Bullock was under exclusively contract for ARC), Durium used the pseudonym Jack Norman and his Orchestra for the Phil Spitalny group. The names of the Paull Sisters and Chick Bullock were skipped on the US pressings ( DURIUM), but on the European pressings by durium ( small letters) and Sefono labels the names were mentioned. On a Swedish Veckans SKIVA sleeve nr. 6, I have in my collection, one of those recordings: I'm keepin' company" is described as: Foxtrot: I'm keepin' company "Jag följer med dig! ".

In the liner notes ( mind I'm talking about a record sleeve from ca. 1934 !!) the Paull Sisters are labeled as a quartet: it reads: "Refrängsången utföres av en populär damkvartett - Paull Sisters - som utgör ett raffinerat inslag i schlagern" ( = The vocal refrain is performed by a popular female quartet - Paull Sisters, - a sophisticated sequence of the recording ). Mind that this sleeve was released in 1934 for a 1931 recording and there were no reasons anymore to suppress the names of the Paull Sisters and Chick Bullock but it is weird to learn that the Paull Sisters were labeled as a quartet.

I asked Judye why they called them selves the Paull Sisters. I'll inform you about that in the second part later in which I will spotlight the 1930s with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, titled: The Paull Sisters: The 1930s.
