Bix Beiderbecke

Logotype of the Tribute to Bix days in Racine WI (USA) March 8-11th, 2007

This weekend it was 104 years ago that Leon Bix Beiderbecke was born in Davenport IA (USA). Party time ! It was celebrated by his fans at several festivals, like the Tribute to Bix festival in Racine WI (USA). Although Bix is one of the best cornet player of the 1920s in the eyes of the white traditional orientated jazz fans, his nameis still rather unknown to most of the younger people.

Leon Bix Beiderbecke was a self-educated man on cornet. He learned to play the instrument by playing along with records. He started a professional career in music and settled in Chicago where he recorded with the Wolverines. He performed and recorded with then famous bands like the band of Frankie Trumbauer and Jean Goldkette's. When the Goldkette band was disbanded Bix joined the famous Paul Whiteman Orchestra, where he made his best recordings. Due to a alcohol he had to leave Whiteman's orchestra, as he was frequently unable to play. He died, due to drinking problems, in 1931.

Bix had a beautiful and original style in playing the cornet, that brought him fame even nowadays. A lot of traditional trumpet players still try to imitate or approach his way of playing his instrument. Although the recordings he made during the 1920s, now eighty years ago, might sound primitive and dated (like the accoustical recorded Wolverines ) they are restored well and a joy to listen to.

I played myself the Jazz Archives CD Bix Beiderbecke and the Wolverines and the BBC CD Bix Beiderbecke, Great Original Performances 1924 - 1930 ( Jazz Classics in Digital Stereo (sic) ).

I found some documentaries to illustrate the short career ( he became only 28 years old) of this great cornet player of the 1920s.
