A week ago Frits Jonker pointed me to some great Dutch soundsheets from the 1960s in a selection Jazz or No? It was really great to hear these 1960s ephemeral relics again. It brought me some memories from the period that I became fascinated by records and record playing. During the 1950s and 1960s when I was a kid and a young adult we didn't had a gramophone at home. In those decades, just after the end of the Second World War, the standards of living was not so high ....
I remember that my parents were in an amateur drama club in Hoedekenskerke, a small village in the southwest part of The Netherlands along the Scheldt estuary - at that time for me the center of the world. For a play they needed a gramophone on stage. My parents could lend one from a man some blocks away and I still remember the thrill having a record player at home for a few days. It had only one record: Junge, komm bald wieder by Freddy Quinn ( 1963). Soon we had some records ourselves. Het Beste, the Dutch version of Readers Digest, sent free thin promo records (gratis luisterproef), to invite you to buy sets like Het Beste uit Operette and Musical (= The Best from Light Opera and Musical) or De Gouden Klank der Groten (= The Golden Sound of the Great)

My uncle and aunt in Rotterdam had a gramophone too and when we visited their place in our summer holidays, my brother and I loved to play their gramophone - real breakable records with artists like Dorus ( Tom Manders) and Cor Steyn, two vaudeville artists famous in this part of the world. One of the Klankdrukken ( Soundsheets), we called it Flubberplaatjes, I still have in my collection. It is one to promote the drinking of milk. M-Dag 64 the label reads and the first side was a contest: Grote M-Prijsvraag Voor Een Veilig Verkeer. ( = Great Milk-Contest for Safe Traffic) and the reverse two songs sung by Donald Jones ( his name was not on the label, but we recognized his American accent) Everybody Likes Milk and the Milk-Shake Twist. Donald Jones was an American dancer and vocalist who married a Dutch actress Adele Bloemendaal and lived in The Netherlands.

Another one was a free advertisement record for Citroën Cars, and specially the 2CV. On the record a photo of a young duck. This needs some explanation for foreign readers I guess. In The Netherland this car, the 2CV, is nicknamed a Lelijke Eend (= an Ugly Duckling), like in Germany, where they call it an Ente or Lame Ente. In most other countries they know this type of car as the Kørende Paraply ( = The Driving Umbrella) (In Denmark - is this correct Jo?) or De Geit ( The Goat) in Flanders or Jernseng (= iron bed) in Norway.

These Klankdrukken ( = Soundsheets) were produced by Sonopresse in Rotterdam, that must have made hundred thousands of those tiny plastic record between 1961 and 1984. The Dutch Het Beste "luisterproeven" ( = by Reader's Digest) were most made in England by Sound for Industry. ( The one shown above, titled "The Reader's Digest Luisterproef voor The Big Bands Playing Today's Hits met Pim Jacobs als Uw gastheer" was produced by Sonopresse)

Yesterday I refered to the fact that Charlie Beal was born 100 years ago. He is best known for his appearance in the film New Orleans. I showed you a fragment with Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday singing Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans. Charlie Beal was at the piano. Hvickery posted a part of the Armstrong lyrics of the song: "Where the Blues Were Born in New Orleans"

A piano man and can he spiel.

Only has two hands,

But that's a-plenty,

It sounds like 20."

HUIZE POLL en COLEMAN HAWKINS

Afgelopen weekend werd in heel Nederland Open Monumentendag georganiseerd. In De Bilt bij Utrecht
werd herdacht dat Coleman Hawkins in de jaren dertig gespeeld had in Huize Poll. Zeventig jaar geleden speelde Coleman Hawkins, die toen in Nederland verbleef, een maand lang in Huize Poll, een danszaal annex restaurant gelegen in De Bilt. Ruim een jaar geleden onderzocht ik de relatie tussen Coleman Hawkins en Huize Poll hetgeen resulteerde in twee bijdragen, getiteld Coleman Hawkins en Huize Poll en Huize Poll en Coleman Hawkins
Een aantal ondernemers sloeg de handen in elkaar en organiseerden afgelopen zaterdag, 13 september 2008, op de plaats waar Huize Poll gestaan heeft, een manifestatie. Beide foto's zijn bij die gelegenheid gemaakt. Bedankt Jelle voor de foto's.

KID SHEIK ( 1908 - 1996)

De honderdjarigen zijn niet aan te slepen. Vandaag, 100 jaar geleden, 15 september 1908, werd in New Orleans de trompettist en bandleider Kid Sheik Colar geboren. Deze trompettist is vooral bekend geworden door zijn optredens bij de Preservation Hall Band. Als 18 jarige had hij al zijn eigen band, midden jaren twintig, en speelde in de beroemde, of moet ik zeggen, beruchte wijk van New Orleans, Storyville. Hij werd bekend onder heel wat namen: Kid Sheik, of George" Kid Sheik" of Kid Sheik Colar of Cola. Eind jaren veertig ging hij spelen bij George Lewis en werd in de jaren vijftig lid van de Eureka Brass Band en de Harold Dejan's Olympia Brass Band. In de jaren zestig vinden we hem terug in bands zoals zijn eigen groepen the Swingsters en de Storyville Ramblers met legendarische namen als Capt. John Handy en Cié Frazier. Hij maakte verschillende tournees naar Europa om tenslotte te belanden in de Preservation Hall Band. Ik heb een CD in mijn verzameling waarin hij speelt met de Backroom Boys ( mei 1973 in Kopenhagen-Denemarken). Kid Sheik is 88 jaar oud geworden en overleed november 1996.

JULIAN CANNONBALL ADDERLEY

Als hij nog had geleefd, zou Julian Cannonball Adderley vandaag 80 jaar zijn geworden; hij overleed echter voor zijn vijftigste. Vorige maand schreef ik, op zijn sterfdag, over zijn carrriere in de bijdrage: Julian Cannonball Adderley. Ik schreef eerder over zijn schitterende album Somethin' Else, één van de beste jazzplaten allertijden.

JAZZ OR NO? NOSTALGISCH MIJMEREN met FLUBBERPLAATJES:

Melk Is Goed Voor Elk is volgens mij zo'n slogan die al jaren meegaat. Melkdrinken is goed voor opgroeiende kinderen; dat is nu zo en dat was vroeger zo !! Toen ik zelf in die fase zat, lang geleden in de vorige eeuw, moest ik zelfs drie bekers melk per dag drinken. Terugkijkend op die tijd kan ik alleen concluderen dat ik daar een verslaving aan heb overgehouden ......... Lees er alles over in: Klankdrukken.

Huize Poll and Coleman Hawkins

Huize Poll in de Bilt ( early 20th Century)

Some weeks ago I was asked for help to find out some information about Huize Poll, a hotel - dancing at the Bilt in the centre of Holland near the city of Utrecht. In 1938 Coleman Hawkins performed at this venue and Jelle van der Zee asked me where Coleman Hawkins lived during this period and if he slept in the neighbourhood of the venue where he had played.
Thanks to Jelle's questions some research started and with the help of Jan Brouwer of the Dutch Jazz Archive in Amsterdam some more information about that concert at Huize Poll came to light.
After the publication of the first blog Jelly handed me some additional information too.

Hawkins returned to Holland after a tour abroad on the first on January 1938 and found a guesthouse in Utrecht, in the middle of the country.
He had to play at Huize Poll in De Bilt during that month with his trio ( Coleman Hawkins - Freddy Johnson - Maurice van Kleef ).
Johan Burgersdijk, now 92 years old, was a trombone player in the Utrecht Student Big Band The Rhythm Collegians, directed by Nol Stramrood. One of the members of that band was Lex De Booy, a trumpet player. Johan Burgerdijk remembers that they played at Tivoli, a venue in Utrecht at a dance meeting, where 1500 young people where gathered. The band alternated with The Ramblers, featuring Coleman Hawkins as a special guest.

It might be possible that Johan Burgersdijk referred to this 3rd Harlem Night, organized by the Dutch Jazz Liga, organized at Tivoli on the 2nd of November 1935. At that concert Hawkins played with The Hot Mixers directed by Nico van Oostrum and this band alternated with The Undergraduates, a Utrecht student big-band with 13 members. The names of the members are unknown up to now.

Coleman Hawkins invited the musicians of the Rhythm Collegians, Johan Burgerdijk remembered, to join him when he would play at Huize Poll in De Bilt. Coleman Hawkins and his trio were booked for January 1938, and as far as I have found this was the only time they played at Huize Poll. It might be possible that the young musicians of that student band joined the trio during tis engagement. Johan Burgerdijk was not in Huize Poll during these concerts in January 1938, as he moved to the Dutch Indies the year before

While playing at Huize Poll, Hawkins was invited to play at the Dierentuin in The Hague at a Jazz Liga concert on the 12th of January 1938. This invitation, made by Ed Crommelin, chairman of the Dutch Jazz Liga, reached Hawkins in De Bilt a day before the concert.
He contacted Ed Crommelin on the 11th of January with a message that reads: As we will be engaged that night ( Wednesday 12 February) until 11:30, we can arrive in The Hague at one o' clock ready.
They agreed and, although Hawkins wanted a rather extensive amount of money ( 175 Dutch guilders), the performance was a success and 4000 people enjoyed the concert. (Mind that a modal worker earned about 25 guilders a week )

In the night of Saturday 12 up to Sunday the 13th of April 1958 a heavy fire burns Huize Poll down!

Maybe Johan Burgerdijk can verify for us that he played at the 3rd Harlem Night at Tivoli in Utrecht as part of The Undergraduates, maybe a pseudonym for The Rhythm Collegians in November 1935. That would be great !! Maybe the picture, made during that concert with Coleman Hawkins in front of The Hot Mixers can be a good help.

Huize Poll in De Bilt ( begin 20ste eeuw)

Een paar weken geleden werd me gevraagd om informatie over Huize Poll, een hotel - dancing in De Bilt, vlakbij Utrecht. In 1938 trad Coleman Hawkins er op en Jelle van der Zee wilde informatie over Coleman Hawkins en zijn optredens in De Bilt. Waar woonde Coleman Hawkins ten tijde van deze optredens en waar sliep hij 's avonds? Was dat in De Bilt of reisde hij elke avond naar zijn slaapadres? Ik schreef hierover in een eerder bericht.
Vanaf het moment dat Jelly met deze gedetailleerde vragen kwam ben ik begonnen met wat onderzoekjes en dankzij aanvullende informatie van Jelle en van Jan Brouwer van het Nederlands Jazz Archief in Amsterdam kunnen sommige puzzlestukjes in elkaar gepast worden.

Op 1 januari 1938 keerde Coleman Hawkins terug van een tournee door het buitenland en vestigde zich in Utrecht, waar hij een pension vond.
Hij was geboekt voor optredens in de maand januari van dat jaar in Huize Poll in De Bilt met zijn trio ( Coleman Hawkins - Freddy Johnson - Maurice van Kleef ). Johan Burgersdijk, nu 92 jaar oud, toendertijd trombonist in de Utrechtse Studenten Big Band The Rhythm Collegians geleid door Nol Stramrood, herinnert zich een optreden in het Tivoli in Utrecht. Ze speelden toen, afgewisseld met The Ramblers tijdens een dansavond waarbij zo'n 1500 jonge mensen aanwezig waren. Coleman Hawkins was gastspeler bij The Ramblers.

Misschien doelt Johan Burgerdijk op het optreden tijdens de 3de-Harlem Night georganiseerd door de Nederlandse Jazz Liga op 2 november 1935. Coleman Hawkins trad toen op als gastspeler bij The Hot Mixers. Ze speelden afwisselend met een Utrechtse studenten big-band The Undergraduates, een 13 man sterke band, waarvan informatie over de bezetting helaas ontbreekt.

Hoe dan ook, Coleman Hawkins nodigde enkele spelers van de band uit samen met hem te spelen in Huize Poll in De Bilt. Volgens een aankondiging in De Jazzwereld lijkt het er op dat Coleman Hawkins de hele januari maand van 1938 optrad in Huize Poll. Voorzover ik kan nagaan is dat de enige keer geweest dat hij in De Bilt optrad. Tijdens één ( of meer) van die optredens kunnen enkele leden van de band, waaronder trompettist Lex De Booy, samen opgetreden hebben met Coleman Hawkins en zijn trio. Johan Burgerdijk was daar niet bij - die was het jaar daarvoor naar Indie vertrokken.

Tijdens dit engagement in Huize Poll wordt Coleman Hawkins uitgenodigd te spelen op een avond voor de Jazz Liga in de Dierentuin in Den Haag.
De uitnodiging van Ed Crommelin, voorzitter van die Nederlandse Jazz Liga komt een paar dagen voor het concert en Hawkins meldt: As we will be engaged that night ( woensdag 12 februari) until 11:30, we can arrive in The Hague at one o' clock ready. ( Aangezien we deze avond (woensdag 12 januari ) moeten spelen tot half twaalf kunnen we op we op zijn vroegst om één uur in Den Haag zijn.) De deal wordt gesloten en Hawkins treedt met zijn trio aan in de Dierentuin voor een optreden waar zo'n 4000 bezoekers op af gekomen zijn.
Zo'n extraatje liet Coleman Hawkins zich niet ontgaan: hij vroeg en kreeg er 175 gulden voor in een tijd dat een modale werknemen ongeveer 25 gulden in de week verdiende.

In de nacht van zaterdag 12 op zondag 13 april 1958 brandt Huize Poll af en gaat roemloos ten onder.

Misschien kan Johan Burgerdijk bevestigen dat het inderdaad gaat over de 3rd Harlem Night gehouden in Tivoli en dat de band waarin hij speelde The Undergraduates was, misschien een pseudonuym voor The Rhythm Collegians. Misschien kan de foto, van Coleman Hawkins en The Hot Mixers hierbij van nut zijn.

Coleman Hawkins and Huize Poll

I received a message that reads like a detective; it's a request for information for a project about Huize Poll, a restaurant - dancing venue in the 1930s in De Bilt, a village in the centre of The Netherlands.

Jelle Van der Zee wrote me: The place where I live in the centre of The Netherlands, De Bilt, was seventy years ago a resting place on the road from Utrecht along Zeist to the remote inlands around Arnhem. There was a local train connection between Utrecht along the Grebbeberg up to Wageningen. The second best resting place for horses and carriages and the first auto cars was café Huize Poll. The best one was 't Kalfje in the same village. Huize Poll was orginally a hotel, but in the late 1930s it was a restaurant and dancing.

In January 1938, the year I was born, Coleman Hawkins played here with his trio ( prob. Coleman Hawkins tenor sax - Freddy Johnson piano and Maurice Van Kleef drums.). I hope to get some more information about Huize Poll, but it seems as if speaking about Huize Poll, the dancing and Coleman Hawkins is surpressed here in the village. I found some photo's of the house and I know who the owners were. A woman told me that she had seen Coleman Hawkins sitting in the local train to De Bilt one afternoon and a 90 years old amateur trombone player who still lives in De Bilt could have been in Huize Poll. Some rumours are going around that Coleman Hawkins had a love affair with a girl from De Bilt.

Well, I'm looking for some clues to start my research, like information about the place where Coleman Hawkins used to live in the late 1930s. Did he live in Rotterdam or did he had a sleeping place near the dancing where he performed? Like Hamdorff in Laren? Could he have recorded somewhere, when he was spotted in the train and was he returning to the place where he lived? It would be great if some of you could help me with my research. Huize Poll in 1907

Jelle. I can give you some information I have found. Coleman Hawkins had engagements during this period at the Mephisto club in Rotterdam ( 1937) ( Mephisto was destroyed by a great fire in May 1938) ,Casino Hamdorff in Laren, the Hof van Holland in Hilversum, the Negro Palace in Amsterdam (1938) and ..... also in 1938 an engagement in Huize Poll in De Bilt. Other bands that played at Huize Poll where The Jumping Jacks ( 1937), Jack De Vries Internationals ( 1938) and Eddy Meenk (1938). Clara De Vries, the sister of Jack and trumpet player, performed in 1938 at 't Kalfje, the other local venue. I guess that Coleman Hawkins stayed at Huize Poll after his performances, or somewhere in De Bilt, as I don't believe that he travelled back late at night to his guesthouse in some other city. Coleman Hawkins and his trio had a recording session on the 14th of June 1938 at the Casino Hamdorff in Laren with his trio, where he recorded six tunes, all released on Panachord and Decca. Hawkins left for the States mid 1939.

I found two film fragments. The first one tells you the story of Coleman Hawkins in the Netherlands and the second one is the well known unique shot where you can see and hear Coleman Hawkins play mid 1930s with Leo De La Fuente at the piano.

I wish I were Twins by Hawkins Coleman and Leo de la Fuente on piano.( 1935). I think this is a most unique piece of early jazz history on film

Ik kreeg een berichtje dat leek op een onderwerp uit een spannend jongensboek; het was een verzoek om informatie over Huize Poll, een restaurant - dancing uit de jaren dertig, gelegen in De Bilt.

Jelle Van der Zee schreef me: Mijn woonplaats De Bilt was vroeger een doorgangsdorp van Utrecht via Zeist naar de binnenlanden van Arnhem. Er liep zelfs een trammetje uit Utrecht onderlangs de Grebbeberg naar Wageningen. De tweede (na 't Kalfje) beste uitspanning voor mensen met koetsen en de eerste auto's uit Utrecht was Huize Poll; oorspronkelijk een hotel maar vooral restaurant dancing.

Hier had rond mijn geboortejaar 1938 in januari Coleman Hawkins een optreden met een trio. ( Waarschijnlijk Coleman Hawkins tenorsax - Freddy Johnson piano en Maurice van Kleef drums ( Hans).) Ik probeer via de Historische Kring in De Bilt meer te weten te komen over Huize Poll, maar een dancing en de naam Coleman Hawkins is hier een beetje vies en verzwegen. Er zijn wel plaatjes en eigenaarsnamen. Toch ken ik een vrouw die Coleman 's middags in de tram naar De Bilt heeft zien zitten en er loopt hier een plaatsgenoot rond van begin negentig, die amateur big band trombonist is geweest en zo op z'n 20+ in Huize Poll geweest kan zijn.
Er doet ook een mooi gerucht de ronde dat Coleman Hawkins, conform de jazztraditie, een kind verwekt zou hebben bij een Bilts meisje.

Ik zoek nu wat aanknopingpunten.
Waar woonde (logeeerde) Coleman Hawkins in 1938? In Rotterdam?
Of altijd in de dancing waar hij speelde, zoals Hamdorff?
Hij kan op de terugreis voor plaatopnamen in de tram gezeten hebben.

Beste Jelle. Dit is de informatie die ik zo snel heb kunnen vinden - misschien voegt het iets toe. Halverwege 1939 vertrok Coleman Hawkins naar Amerika.

Ik vond twee filmfragmenten. Het eerste is een deel van een documentaire dat vertelt over Coleman Hawkins in Nederland en het tweede fragment is een uniek stukje film uit 1935 waar je Coleman Hawkins kunt zien en horen spelen met Leo De La Fuente op piano.

I wish I were Twins - Hawkins Coleman en Leo de la Fuente ( 1935) een uniek stukje vroege jazzgeschiedenis.
