Billy Cobham

Today I love to point you to a CD by drummer Billy Cobham titled The Traveler. Billy Cobham was one of the leading drummers from the 1970s. I found this album at a garage sale and bought it for a few euros. It was recorded November 1993 at the Real World Studios Box Mill in Bath, England and contains Billy Cobham with different groups.

Billy Cobham, born in May 1944 in Panama, but raised in New York City is one of the best percussionist in the world, they say. I don't know if this is true, but a fact is that he is still a sought after percussionist. His first performances were with his father at the piano and after he finished high school and his military services at the army he started as a drummer in the Horace Silver Quintet; nothing less than that. I found a 1968 fragment of a concert in which you can hear the Horace Silver Quintet featuring Horace at the piano, Bill Hardman at the trumpet, Bennie Maupin at the saxophone, John Williams bass and Billy Cobham drums.

He played only one season with the Horace Silver Quintet, and the audience had learned that he was a great accompanist. He played in the jazz-rock group Dreams, founded by the Brecker Brothers ( Randy and Mike) and was introduced to Miles Davis, in whose jazz-rock fushion band he accompanied Miles on albums like Bitches Brew and Live-Evil. He became the drummer in the John McLaughin's Mahavishnu Orchestra.

In the 1980s he lived in Europe and played as a freelancer wherever he was asked; playing with musicians like Johanes Faber, the German trumpet player and own bands.

This album, Billy Cobham - The Travelers proves that his is a skilled drummer, a great accompanist and that makes the album worth to listen to, but it is not all my piece of cake. I don't like the pop songs, like Dippin' The Bisquits In The Soup ( What a title !!) with strings (= syntesizer) and vocals.

A few month ago I posted a contribution by Yves Francois Smierciak titled Franz Jacobs Remembered part one and part 2 . Franz Jackson passed away May 2008. I received a short remembrance by Dr. Kim Gast, professor of Music, Saxophone and Jazz at the St. Cloud State University:

I heard Franz in Chicago when he was 92. The guy just blew me away. I did not know who he was but I sensed I was hearing something special. He sounded like all the great saxophonists of jazz wrapped up into one soul. When I later learned who he was, I felt like I had been touched by the angel of jazz herself. Vandaag staat een CD van drummer Billy Cobham, de beste drummer uit de jaren zeventig naar men zegt, in de schijnwerpers, getiteld The Traveler. Ik kwam deze plaat tegen op een rommelmarkt. De muziek is opgenomen in november 1993 in de Real World Studios Box Mill in Bath, Engeland en bevat Billy Cobham in verschillende bezettingen.

Billy Cobham, geboren in mei 1944 in Panama, maar opgegroeid in New York City is, naar men zegt, één van de beste slagwerkers ter wereld. Of dat zo is kan ik niet beoordelen; feit is wel dat hij nog steeds veel gevraagd wordt. Zijn eerste optreden was met zijn vader achter de piano en nadat hij de middelbare school en zijn militaire dienst had afgesloten ging hij als drummer spelen bij het Horace Silver Quintet; ik kan me een mindere start voorstellen. Ik vond een fragment uit 1968 van een concert waarin je het kwintet van Horace Silver kan zien spelen: Horace Silver piano - Bill Hardman trumpet - Bennie Maupin saxophone, John Williams bass - Billy Cobham drums.

Hij speelde slechts één seizoen bij het Horace Silver Quintet, maar had in die korte periode naam gemaakt bij het publiek als een groot begeleider. Zo gaat bij een popsongs als Dippin' The Bisquits In The Soup ( Wie verzint zo'n titel?) with strings ( = syntesizer) en zangeressen de knop om.

Franz Jackson remembered - 2

On the 6th of May 2008 Franz Jackson ( 1912 - 2008) passed away, 95 years old. Yves Francois Smierciak, from Chicago (USA) was a close friend of Franz and sent me this contribution he loves to share with the visitors of this Keep Swinging blog. Yesterday I published the first part about the period up to 1950, titled Franz Jackson remembered -1; today the second part, titled Franz Jackson remembered -2, about the 1950s up to his death, has been published.

In the 50's Franz Jackson noticed that the swing music he loved so much was not in vogue. Most musicians were playing either rhythm and blues, be bop or dixieland. After subbing for an ailing George Lewis for a gig by the Lewis band (in Chicago), Franz decided to start his own traditional jazz combo, It was called Franz Jackson and his Original Jass All Stars, and became quite famous in various clubs around Chicago, featuring a small group of veterans like Bob Schoffner, Al Wynn, Preston Jackson, Ikey Robinson and Roxelle Claxton amongst others.

The band was popular enough to play at the Red Arrow and other clubs in the Chicago area for over 15 years. Even though it was basically a trad band, he did several blues and even some of the numbers he had written in the swing era. Franz Jackson played almost exclusively clarinet during this time period (many of the records he made on Philips, Riverside and his own label feature him on clarinet only), finally coming back to his saxes in the later 60's.

Finally, from the 70's to early this year Franz Jackson has been playing both the traditional jazz repertoire as well as the swing era music he loved so much, and playing much of it tenor sax again (in the Original Jass All Stars, he mostly played clarinet), and singing in his characteristic manner.

The reason for his death were complications after a hip surgery last month. I will miss Franz, he was, in many ways, my musical mentor and teacher; he encouraged me in my "growl" style of trumpet playing, and helped me in the swing sessions I recorded with him and other swing era musicians in the 1980's. These records can be heard on Delmark 565 "Blues for Hawk". More than even for his great music and presence, the man himself was a link to the era I love so much, the people form that era were some of the greatest friends I ever had, and Franz was the best of my friends from that era.

In de jaren vijftig ontdekte Franz Jackson dat de belangstelling voor de swing muziek tanende was. Veel muzikanten gingen bijvoorbeeld rhythm and blues spelen, bebop of dixieland. Nadat hij ingevallen was voor een zieke George Lewis die bij de Lewis band in Chicago speelde, koos hij ervoor een eigen groep op te richten, die traditionele jazz ging spelen. De groep kreeg de naam Franz Jackson and his Original Jass All Stars, en kreeg bekendheid in allerlei clubs in en rond Chicago. Zijn band bestond uit een klein groepje veteranen zoals Bob Schoffner, Al Wynn, Preston Jackson, Ikey Robinson en Roxelle Claxton.

Ze waren zo populair dat ze zelfs vijftien jaar lang in de Red Arrow en andere clubs mochten spelen. Hoewel ze eigenlijk een band waren die traditionele jazz speelden, waren ze niet vies van af en toe een bluesnummer of een eigen compositie van Franz Jackson uit zijn swingperiode. Franz Jackson speelde bijna uitsluitend klarinet in deze periode ( veel van zijn opnamen voor Philips, Riverside en zijn eigen label laten hem op dat instrument horen); eind jaren zestig pakt hij ook zijn saxofoon weer op.

Vanaf de jaren zeventig, tot vlak voor zijn dood, speelde Franz Jackson zowel traditionele jazz als swing; vooral dat laatste vond hij geweldig. Hij speelde ook weer vaak op zijn tenorsaxofoon ( met de Original Jass All Stars speelt hij vooral klarinet) en zong hij op zijn zo typische wijze.

Zijn overlijden was te danken aan complicaties ontstaan na een heupoperatie die hij vorige maand had ondergaan. Ik zal Franz missen. Hij was, in veel opzichten, mijn muzikale leermeester en inspirator. Hij moedigde me aan om me verder op mijn "growl" stijl op de trompet te richten en hielp me bij swing opnamen die ik met hem en andere swingmusici in de jaren 80 maakte. Deze opnamen kun je horen op de CD Blues For Hawk (Delmark 565). Niet alleen vanwege zijn muziek, maar ook vanwege het feit dat hij voor mij de link was met het verleden dat ik zo lief had, met de mensen uit die periode, die soms grootste vrienden waren; en Franz was natuurlijk de grootste vriend !!

Franz Jackson remembered - 1

Yves Francois Smierciak, from Chicago (USA) was a close friend of Frank and sent me this contribution he loves to share with the visitors of this Keep Swinging blog. Today the first part about the period up to 1950, titled Franz Jackson remembered - 1; tommorow the second part, titled Franz Jackson remembered - 2 will be published.

Dear friends of mine, anyone who knows me well knows the terrific amount of influence that this most wonderful musician (and just as much a wonderful person) has affected my life. I have posted this on the Keep Swinging blog to let the jazz world know, and, you, my friends, should know a little about Franz Jackson as well, and what an influence he has has had in so many peoples lives.

Franz Jackson has lived to the ripe age of 95. It was incredible for me to still be able to play with him on a couple of gigs in the last few months, and at least he was able to give everyone a taste of the real jazz first hand, even well into the new century, teaching people the music he loved so much so it would not be forgotten. Franz Jackson was born in November 1 1912 in Rock Island Illinois. he started playing sax when he was 12, and by the time he was 16 he was playing with Albert Ammons, Francois Mousley and Punch Miller. He was, by 1931 playing in many of the top Chicago bands (Cassino Simpson, Reuben Reeves, Walter Barnes and Caroll Dickerson to name a few), and manged to record in late 1933 with Reeves. Note that 3 of the 4 songs recorded were his compositions, and all 4 were his arrangements. These recordings are to be found on the Timeless CD Ruben Reeves The Complete Vocalions 1928-1933 ( Timeless CBC 1-039) Walter Barnes Band ( 1931). Franz is in the front row the second man from the left, next to leader and clarinet player Walter Barnes. Franz is holding an alto saxophone.

In 1937 Franz, after playing with Jimmy Noone and Roy Eldridge, Franz replaced Ben Webster in Fletcher Henderson's band, playing the same book that Hawk made famous. What Franz told me was that he wanted to play the same book Hawkins, Berry and Webster played. When word was in town that Ben was leaving, he came in, as if he was the union substitute for the departing Webster, since he was a great sax player, no one contested it. A CD issue of the broadcasts show both Franz and Henderson's last great band in good light (the 78's, save for an excellent version of "Moten Stomp" are pops, but Franz takes an 8 bar solo on one of Vocalion pop tunes). After the residency finished, Franz again played with Roy Eldridge, this time in NYC, making both some fine records for Variety as well as a broadcast LP that came out on jazz Archives #14.
This album contains the December 1933 sides of Blue "River" Reeves and his River Boys featuring Franz Jackson on clarinet and tenorsax. He was also the arranger.

The 40's were a time busy with arrangements for many big bands (including the Bascomb brothers, Cootie Williams and Jack Teagarden), as well as playing both in big bands led by Fats Waller, Earl Hines and combos like Frankie Newton and Henry "Red" Allen. He led a small jump swing group at the Savoy and other clubs, before doing USO shows ( a recording is issued on "Jazz and Hot Dance in Finland" from 1947 of Franz playing the blues with a sextet and vocalist I believe to be Myra Johnson. Scheldejazz '08.
Today the Scheldejazz '08 , organized in Terneuzen, in the southwest part of The Netherlands, enters its last festival day with performances by artists like Lucas van Merwijk and the Beter R. de Vriesband on the Markt podium. There will be, of course, a service at the Grote Kerk with the N.O. Longfield Jazzcrackers and the Far Out Gospel Choir. At the Arsenaal podium you can enjoy concerts by Boo's Jazoos and Carmen Gomez. In Porgy en Bess saxophone player Jan Menu, born and bred in Terneuzen, has organised a jam session with some of the artists mentioned above. A great final act of this Scheldejazz '08, that was opened by the Monty Alexander Trio. I found a video interview made by the PZC, the regional news paper, about the festival and Monty Alexander, during a rehearsal in Porgy en Bess on Thursday afternoon I guess, saying some wise things about jazz and about his music. Enjoy it ....

Beste mensen, iedereen die me een beetje kent weet hoe groot de invloed van deze geweldige muzikant ( maar ook als mens) op mijn leven geweest is. Ik wil jullie graag in deze Keep Swinging blog, meer vertellen over Franz Jackson en waarom hij zo belangrijk geweest is voor zovelen.

Franz Jackson is 95 jaar oud mogen worden. Eigenlijk ongelooflijk als je bedenkt dat ik een paar maanden geleden nog een paar keer met hem heb opgetreden. En hij wilde graag, uit de eerste hand, alles vertellen over de vroege jaren van de jazz, in de hoop dat het allemaal niet vergeten zou worden. Franz werd geboren op 1 november 1912 in Rock Island Illinois. He begon sax te spelen toen hij twaalf jaar was en toen hij 16 werd speelde hij met Albert Ammons, Francois Mousley en Punch Miller. In 1931 speelde hij al in de grote bands uit Chicago, zoals die van Cassino Simpson, Reuben Reeves, Walter Barnes en Caroll Dickerson om er een paar te noemen en nam eind 1933 platen op met Rueben Reeves; drie eigen composities en alle vier zijn arrangementen. Het beste kun je luisteren naar de radio-opnamen uit die periode met Franz in het orkest van Fletcher Henderson, die geven een beter beeld dan de 78-toeren platen die van hen in die periode verschenen - dat waren, met uitzondering van wellicht Moten Swing, popsongs. Nadat zijn contract afliep speelde Franz Jackson weer bij Roy Eldridge, deze keer in New York City. Hij maakte een paar heerlijke platen en radiouitzendingen uit deze periode zijn later heruitgebracht op LP (Jazz Archives # 14).
Deze heruitgave van Timelesss bevat de vier opnamen uit december 1933 van Ruben "River" Reeves and his River Boys met Franz Jackson op klarinet en tenorsdax. Franz was ook de arrangeur.

Scheldejazz '08.

Vandaag begint het Scheldejazz '08 in Terneuzen aan haar laatste festivaldag met optredens van Lucas van Merwijk en de Beter R. de Vriesband op het Markt podium. Natuurlijk is er ook dit jaar een kerkdienst gepland in de Grote Kerk met de N.O. Longfield Jazzcrackers en het gospelkoor Far Out. Op het Arsenaal podium spelen de Boo's Jazoos en Carmen Gomez. In Porgy en Bess leidt saxofonist Jan Menu, hier geboren en getogen, een jamsessie met enkele musici, die vandaag op de diverse podia te horen zijn. Dat belooft een knallende uitsmijter te worden van het Scheldejazz '08 festival, dat op donderdag begon met een grandioos optreden van het Monty Alexander Trio. Ik vond een video-interview gemaakt door de PZC, het regionale dagblad voor zuidwest Nederland, over het festival en met Monty Alexander, geregistreerd tijdens een repetitie afgelopen donderdagmiddag in Porgy en Bess. Monty zegt er enkele rake dingen over jazz in het algemeen en zijn muziek in het bijzonder. Een kleine toegift dus ........
