Michael Brecker

Michael Brecker passed away 57 years old.

Everybody knew he was suffering from leukemia. He underwent an experimental stem cell operation that did not go as well as hoped and although doctors had been searching for a suitable bone marrow match for Brecker over the past year, they were unable to find the right match. Calls for help were on jazz lists all around the world.

Michael Brecker was born in 1949 in Philadelphia and learned to play the clarinet and alto saxophone when he was a kid. He took the tenor saxophone while on high school and he was a great admirer of the music played by John Coltrane.

Being a student on the university he played in rock groups and when he moved to New York he founded his own group, together with his brother Randy, who played the trumpet and Billy Cobham , who is a percusionist.
He played a few years with Horace Silver before he formed the well known Brecker Brothers with his brother Randy, a group that played a kind of rock jazz. In 1979 the group was disbanded and Michael formed in the early 1980s with vibraphonist Mike Mainieri the group Steps Ahead. This group became rather popular and they made several well sold recordings. In the mid 1980s Michael became the leader of that band, featuring Mike Stern on electric guitar.
He toured with the Herbie Hancock Quartet and made a recording using a synthesizer controller, the so-called Electronic Wind Instrument (EWI).

One of the recordings I like very much is the album Directions in Music, he made with Herbie Hancock and Roy Hargrove. This is a registration of a live concert at Massey Hall, Toronto (Canada) October 2001.

The album American Dreams by Charlie Haden which features Michael Brecker, Brad Mehldau and Brian Blade is another favorite of mine, as it was performed live at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague ( The Netherlands ) 12 July 2003.

Michael Brecker played the tenor saxophone during this concert with Charlie Haden's American Dreams Orchestra with Brad Mehldau, one of my favorite piano players and Jorge Rossy on drums. At that occasion the strings of the Conservatorium of The Hague completed the quartet. This album, featuring Charlie Haden as a composer and arranger in the first place, fascinates me and I love to listen to it.

After the performance Michael Brecker and Charlie Haden autographed their album - a valuable remembrance of a great musician.

Michael Brecker is op 57 jarige leeftijd overleden.

Het was algemeen bekend dat hij leed aan leukemie. Hij kreeg in mei vorig jaar een beenbergoperatie, maar deze sloeg niet aan. Hoewel de doktoren naarstig zochten naar geschikte stamcellen voor transplantatie, oproepen op internet ten spijt, kwam deze laatste strohalm te laat.

Michael Brecker werd geboren in Philadelphia in 1949. Hij leerde als kind klarinet en altsax spelen. Op de middelbare school stapte hij over op de tenorsaxofoon. Hij was een grote bewonderaar van de muziek van John Coltrane.

Als student aan de universiteit speelde hij in rock bands en toen hij naar New York verhuisde vormde hij samen met zijn broer Randy, die trompet speelt en Billy Cobham (drums) een eigen groep.

Michael speelde een paar jaar bij Horace Silver voordat hij met zijn broer Randy de Brecker Brothers oprichtte, een groep, die vooral rock jazz speelde.

In 1979 werd de groep opgeheven en vormde Michael samen met vibrafonist Mike Mainieri de group Steps Ahead. Deze groep werd tamelijk populair en hun platen verkochten. Midden jaren tachtig werd Michael de leider van Step Ahead, die o.a. ook Mike Stern op electrische gitaar, bevatte. Verder maakte hij een tournee met Herbie Hancock en experimenteerde met het zgn. Electronic Wind Instrument (EWI), een electronisch blaasinstrument.

Eén van de platen die ik erg graag hoor is Directions in Music, die hij maakte met Herbie Hancock en Roy Hargrove. Het is een registratie van een concert in Massey Hall, Toronto (Canada) oktober 2001.

Het album American Dreams van Charlie Haden, waarop Michael Brecker, Brad Mehldau en Brian Blade meespelen is een andere favoriet. Dit komt mede omdat dit album gespeeld werd op 13 juli 2003 tijdens het North Sea Jazz Festival in Den Haag.

Michael Brecker speelde tenor op dit concert van Charlie Haden's American Dreams Orchestra met Brad Mehldau, één van mijn favorieten op de piano, en Jorge Rossy op drums. Een strijkorkest van het Haagse Conservatorium mocht het quartet aanvullen. Dit album illustreert vooral Charlie Haden als componist en arrangeur en ik mag het graag opzetten.

Na het concert signeerden Michael Brecker en Charlie Haden hun plaat en dit is en mooie herinnering geworden aan een groot artiest.
