Op 2 december 2011 overleed ukelele-legende Bill Tappy Tapia op 103 jarige leeftijd - één maand voordat hij 104 jaar oud hoopte te worden. Hij stond tot aan zijn dood op de planken - met een carrière van meer dan 90-jaar, behoorde hij, met Johan Heesters, tot één van de oudste actieve muzikanten ter wereld - een ongelooflijke prestatie van een opmerkelijk artiest in de wereld van de showbiz.

Bill Tapia werd geboren op nieuwjaardag 1908 in Honolulu, Hawaii en kreeg zijn eerste instrument op 7-jarige leeftijd. Hij startte zijn carrière tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog, toen hij in 1918 voor de Amerikaanse troepen, gestationeerd op Hawaii, mocht optreden en hij kreeg bekendheid door zijn soloversie op de ukelele van J. P. Sousa's The Stars And Stripes Forever. Nadat hij de ukelele had ingewisseld voor de banjo, om meer werk te krijgen, ging hij spelen bij vaudevilleshows en op lijndiensten met stoomschepen tussen Hawaii en de westkust van de VS. ....... tijdens de dertiger jaren speelde hij af en toe als begeleider van artiesten als Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday, Fats Waller en Louis Armstrong en één keer leerde hij Hollywoodsterren als Clark Gable en Shirley Temple de ukelele te bespelen. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog zat Bill Tapia in Honolulu waar hij een 14-mans orkest leidde. Na de oorlog, verhuisde hij naar de omgeving van San Francisco, waar hij optrad met allerlei swingorkesten. Later werd hij wat honkvaster en ging hij in allerlei TV-studio-orkesten spelen, trad hij op met lokale bands en gaf hij gitaarlessen. Rond de eeuwwisseling stierf zijn vrouw en zijn dochter vlak na elkaar en ging hij weer ukelelespelen, werd herontdekt en begon aan zijn tweede carriere!

Bill Tapia - Tropical Swing ( 2004)

In 2004, toen hij 96 jaar jong was, werd Bill Tapia's eerste album Tropical Swing uitgebracht met jazz- em Hawaiistandards. Het titelnummer op deze cd werd zijn enige eerder uitgebrachte Okeh-78-toerenplaat uit 1936. Na Tropical Swing volgde Duke of Uke (2005) en Livin’ It LIve (2009), en eerder dit jaar Live at the Warner Grand (2011). Deze laatste cd werd gemaakt tijdens het concert rond zijn 100ste verjaardag. Voor zijn 100ste verjaardag had ik (Hans Koert - vertaler) contact met zijn manager en die meldde dat Bill naast hem op de bank zat en blij was met de felicitaties en het stukje dat ik over hem gemaakt had. Hij wilde graag naar Europa komen spelen en of ik dat maar wilde regelen. Kort na zIjn 100ste verjaardag brak hij zijn heup, maar hij bleef spelen tot een jaar geleden ..........

Bill Tapia werd in 2004 toegelaten tot de Ukulele Hall of Fame en ontving in 2011 het Lifetime Achievement Award van de the Hawaiian Academy of Recording Arts. Er werd een documentaire gemaakt door S. Leo Chioang en Mercedes Coats over het leven en de carriere van Bill Tapia, getiteld To You Sweetheart,Aloha - Can Life Begin At 94?". Met een carrièrre van meer dan 90-jaar op de planken lijkt Bill Tapia Johan Heesters, die in 1921 voor het eerst op het toneel stond, te verslaan, al kan Heesters dat, als hij nog een paar jaar blijft leven en optreden hem nog inhalen. Bill Tapia, de ukelele-legende, die op 92-jarige leeftijd aan een tweede carrière begon, speelde tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog in 1918 voor de Amerikaanse troepen, gestationeerd op Hawai, Sousa's de Stars and Stripes Forever op zijn ukelele. Begin december overleed hij thuis op 103-jarige leeftijd ............ Naat hij 100 geworden was, werd er een groot feest geoganiseerd, waarbij de honderdjarige optrad. Ik feliciterde hem hiermee in de Keep Swingingblog en daar was hij zer vereerd mee ......... Zijn producer meldde me dat hij graag in Europa wilde komen spelen - reiskosten, een hotel en wat handgeld om van te leven was al wat hij nodig had ........... en of ik dat maar wilde regelen. Het is er niet van gekomen ............ Hij bleef vol levenslust totdat het afgelpen jaar allemaal minder werd - toch lijkt hij een levend bewijs dat je, zolang je muziek kunt blijven spelen, gezond oud kunt worden ........... Keep Swinging zet dit soort bijzondere artiesten graag in de schijnwerpers. On December the 2nd, ukulele legend Bill 'Tappy' Tapia passed away 103 years old - just one month short of his 104th anniversary. With a career that spanned more than 90 years, Tapia is believed to be the oldest performing musician ever to take the stage - a truly remarkable figure in the world of entertainment has left us.
Bill Tapia was born New Years Day 1908 in Honolulu, Hawaii and got his first instrument at the age of 7. He started his career entertaining World War I troops stationed in Hawaii in 1918 and became famous for his solo ukulele version of J.P. Sousa's "The STars And Stripes Forever". After switching from ukulele to banjo and guitar in order to get more work, Tapia spent his early career playing in vaudevile and on steamships between Hawaii and the West Coast. In the 1930s he performed occasionally as a backup musician with artists like Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday, Fats Waller and Louis Armstrong, and at one point he was employed teaching ukulele to Hollywood stars including Clark Gable and Shirley Temple. Tapia spent World War II in Honolulu leading a 14 piece band. After the war, he relocated to the San Francisco area, continuing to tour for several years with swing bands. Later he settled down and started playing in TV orchestras, as a sideman with local bands, and teaching guitar. Around the turn of the last century, he lost both his wife and daughter. Soon after, he was rediscovered and returned to his ukulele roots embarking a second career.

In 2004, at the age of 96 Bill Tapia released his first CD “Tropical Swing” featuring jazz and Hawaiian standards. The title track was a 1936 recording on Okeh Records, his only previous release. He followed up "Tropical Swing" with "Duke of Uke" (2005) and "Livin’ It LIve" (2009), and earlier this year "Live at the Warner Grand" (2011) was released, documenting his 100th birthday concert. Slowed but not stopped by a broken hip, Tapia continued to tour until late in 2010.

Bill Tapia was inducted into the Ukulele Hall of Fame in 2004, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hawaiian Academy of Recording Arts in 2011. - A documentary was made by S. Bill Tapia Centenary

Today, on the first of January 2008, I love to congratulate Bill Tapia with his 100th birthday. He celebrated this event in november with a great concert on the 18th at the Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro California. On the next fragment Bill Tapia plays the tune Young At Heart, featuring Bill Tapia on ukulele and he also sings, Earl Allen on guitar, Kristin Korb on bass and Frank Devito on drums.

I learned about Bill Tapia thanks to Joergen, who pointed me to some of his last albums, Duke of Uke and Tropical Swing. I wrote about these amazing albums in a previous blog, titled Bill Tapia - Duke of Uke. Pat Paleka Enos, his friend and manager contacted me and told me that Bill had liked this contribution.
Bill Tapia was born on the first of January 1908 in the neighbourhood of Liliha in Hawaii and learned to play the ukulele when he was 10 years old. It is said that he played the Stars and Stripes Forever for the US troups, stationed in Hawaii during world War I. In 1927 Bill became a member of the Orchestra of Johnny Noble and played, during his life as an active jazz musician, mostly on the guitar. He played with artists like Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, King Bennie Nawahi, Sol Hoopii, Andy Iona, Charlie Barnett and Billie Holiday and even Elvis Presley, while visiting the Hawaiian Islands.

When he was in his 90s he started to take up the ukulele again and made the two, before mentioned albums. The next fragment is from a documentary about Bill Tapia's Centenary.

Vandaag, op 1 januari 2008, wil ik graag Bill Tapia feliciteren met zijn honderdste verjaardag. Hij vierde deze gebeurtenis zes weken geleden tijdens een groots opgezet concert op de 18de november 2007, in het Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro California (USA). Het volgende fragment is van dat concert, met Bill Tapia op ukulele en zang in het ietwat ironische nummer Young At Heart, Earl Allen gitaar, Kristin Korb, bas en Frank Devito slagwerk.

Ik leerde Bill Tapia kennen dankzij Joergen, die me wees op zijn twee laatste platen, getiteld Duke of Uke en Tropical Swing. Ik introduceerde deze twee bijzondere platen in een eerdere bijdrage, getiteld Bill Tapia - Duke of Uke. Pat Paleka Enos, manager en vriend van Bill Tapia zocht contact met me daardoor en vertelde dat Bill naast hem op de bank zat en genoten had van de aandacht in mijn blog. Bill Tapia werd geboren op 1 januari 1908 in de omgeving van Liliha op Hawai en leerde de ukulele bespelen op de leeftijd van tien jaar. Er wordt verteld, dat hij al Stars and Stripes Forever speelde voor de Amerikaanse troepen tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog gelegerd op Hawai. In 1927 werd Bill lid van het orkest van Johnny Noble en speelde er, net als de rest van zijn leven als actief musicus, voornamelijk (jazz)gitaar. Hij speelde met artiesten als Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, King Bennie Nawahi, Sol Hoopii, Andy Iona, Charlie Barnett en Billie Holiday en zelfs Elvis Presley, meestal tijdens bezoekjes van hen aan de Hawaiaanse eilandengroep.

Some weeks ago I posted a contribution about Bill Tapia, who will celebrate his 100th birthday next month with a great concert. This veteran ukulele player suprised me with his professional sound. I will share a small film fragment with you where you can hear Bill Tapia play and sing with another guy on the left Lyle Ritz.

Thanks to Jo I was able to listen to one of Lyle Ritz latest albums, titled No Frills. Bill plays both the : ukulele and the bass. Oh boy, what a thrill.
Like the Bill Tapia albums, Tropical Swing and Duke of Uke, this is really great music - relaxed played jazz on this small instrument, this toy for kids. What about this Lyle Ritz?

Lyle Ritz was born in Cleveland, on the 10th of January 1930 ( so he is a youngster compared to Bill - only (!) 77 years young) and he learned to play the violin as a kid. He studied at the Pitsburg Occidental College. He played as a teenager at the Los Angeles Community Symphony Orchestra. While in military service he changed to the tuba and met several jazz musicans, like Lennie Niehaus, who became known for his alto saxophone playing in the West Coast style. Thanks to Lenny he became interested in jazz. He learned himself to play the bass and that became his major instrument for years. He played during the 1950s in bands like the Eddie Grady's Commanders, with Jerry Fielding and Les Elgart. During the 1950s he made some ukulele solo LPs on Verve ( like how About Uke? and 50th State Jazz)

Now he has made four albums on jazz ukulele and two songbooks: The Ukulele Masters ( Jazz and Solo's). He plays the tenor ukulele with the strings tuned like a guitar with the top string an octave higher in the traditional My-Dog-Has-Fleas-tuning, named so to a song with that title: G - C - E - A are the first notes of the melody. Mind that the C is here the lowest note. You can learn more about tuning your ukulele on this site.
It is remarkable that Lyle Ritz became a ukulele player although he never played a fretted instrument. Lyle lives now in Hawaii and plays now-and-then on tours in the USA or Japan. Maybe you don't know, but Japan has an active group of ukulele players like the Sweet Hollywaiians, a string band with young Japanese musicians.

Did you know that we had a great International Ukulele Festival in Belsele near Ghent (Belgium) last May? The next festival is sceduled for April 2009 in St. Niklaas (Belgium).

I found two more film fragment with Lyle Ritz again, now playing on a so-called lunchbox ukulele, a kind of homemade instrument. A funny, but not very usefull instrument - I guess, but you'll never know. Maybe there is aleady a Lunchbox Ukulele album released somewhere. If so, I'll inform you.

Een paar weken geleden vertelde ik over Bill Tapia, die binnenkort zijn 100ste verjaardag viert met een groot concert. Deze veteraan in het spelen op de ukulele ( hoe heet zo iemand? Een ukulist?) verraste me met zijn professionele geluid. Ik liet toen een filmpje zien waarop je rechts Bill Tapia kunt zien spelen en zingen samen met een andere ukulelespeler, ook al wat ouder, Lyle Ritz.

Dankzij Jo kon ik het laatste album van deze Lyle Ritz beluisteren, getiteld No Frills ( = geen franje). Bill bespeelt op deze plaat zowel de ukulele als de bas. Wat een schitterende plaat. Net als Bill Tapia's Tropical Swing en zijn Duke of Uke plaat een verrassing: serieuze jazz op zo'n kleine instrument, dat vaak als kinderspeelgoed wordt gezien. Hoe zit dat eigenlijk met die Lyle Ritz?

Lyle Ritz werd geboren in Cleveland, op 10 januari 1930 ( een jonkie dus in vergelijking met Bill - nog net geen 78) en hij leerde op jonge leeftijd viool spelen. Tijdens zijn militaire dienst leerde hij de tuba bespelen en ontmoette er verschillende jazzmusici, zoals Lennie Niehaus, die zou uitgroeien tot een gevierd altsaxofonist in de zgn. West Coast jazz stijl. Dankzij Lennie raakte hij geinteresseerd in de jazz en begon hij bas te spelen; een instrument dat hij zijn hele leven trouw zou blijven. In de jaren vijftig speelde hij in bands als de Eddie Grady's Commanders, met Jerry Fielding en Les Elgart. In de jaren vijfitg maakte hij echter ook twee solo platen, About Uke? en 50th State Jazz, op de ukulele.

Op dit moment heeft hij vier jazz ukulele platen op zijn naam staan + een tweetal songboeken Ukulele Masters ( Jazz en Solo's). De snaren van zijn instrument heeft hij, heb ik me laten vertellen, gestemd als een gitaar met de bovenste snaar een oktaaf hoger volgens de traditionele My-Dog-Has-Flies stemming; dat is de titel van een liedje, dat begint met de tonen G - C - E en A. De C is hier de laagste toon. Als je meer wilt weten over hoe een ukulele gestemd is, kijk dan maar eens op deze pagina. Ik vind het opvallend dat Lyle Ritz ukulelespeler geworden is, aangezien hij nooit gitaar of zo gespeeld heeft. Bill Tapia, daarentegen, speelde zijn hele leven gitaar. Lyle Ritz woont nu in Hawaii en speelt af en toe buiten zijn eilandengroep op het vasteland van de VS of in Japan, waar ook een fanatieke groep ukulele-spelers is ( denk maar eens aan het groepje jonge Japanse musici, die de groep de Sweet Hollywaiians vormen).

Wisten jullie overigens, dat vorige jaar mei het Eerste Internationale Ukulelefestival heeft plaatsgevonden in Belsele vlak over de grens bij Gent? Over anderhalf jaar, in april 2009, komt er een vervolg in Sint Niklaas (België).

Ik vond nog een grappig filmpje waarin Lyle Ritz te zien is terwijl hij de zgn. lunchbox ukulele bespeeld, een stukje huisvlijt. Geen serieuze muziek natuurlijk, al weet je dat nooit in die kringen. Mocht er ergens op de wereld een plaat gemaakt zijn met daarop lunchbox ukulele muziek dan kun je het hier binnenkort lezen.

Bill Tapia - The Duke Of Uke

Joergen pointed us this summer in his contribution Ukulele Special on the daily Keep Swinging web log to the music of Bill Tapia. He posted a film fragment that made me anxious to learn more about this ukulele player. Last weekend I played myself his two last CDs, titled Tropical Swing and Duke of Uke. What a surprise - I've never heard the uke played so relaxed and swinging like Bill does.

Bill Tapia, nicknamed Tappy, was born on New Years day 1908, which means that he hopes to celebrate his 100th birthday at the end of the year. He learned himself the ukulele when he was a child and he still remembers that the played Stars and Stripes Forever for the US troups stationed in Hawaii in 1918 ( ! ). When he was 12 years old he left school and played at local vaudeville shows. To be honest, this story looks a bit familiar with the start of Oscar Aleman's career. When he was a kid he danced at the vaudeville show of his parents and learned himself playing the cavaquinho too. Isnt it nice to learn that both Oscar Aleman and Bill Tapia exploit the trick playing their instrument behind the head.

In 1927 Bill Tapia started a hotel in Hawaii, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, a place where all great jazz and Hawaiian musicians performed during the 1920s up to the early 1940s. During his long career as a musician he played the guitar in a lot of jazz and swing sessions; the ukulele was only played at informal performances. When his wife Barbie and his daughter Cleo passed away some years ago, he took up the ukulele again. At the age of 94 he made his debut (!) on the uke with the album Tropical Swing and one year later the great album Duke of Uke was recorded.

You only have to listen to the first track of Duke of Uke, All The Things You Are , to become fascinated by this man. The way he plays the ukulele is so relaxed and sophisticated and sounds like a modern jazz guitar solo, backed by a rhythm section that features Byron Yasui on piano and Benny Chong on guitar. Other great tunes are Black Orpheus, Happy Hula and some more Hawaiian tunes like Hapa Haole Hula Girl and Hawaiian Medley on the Tropical Swing CD with Buck Gilles on steel guitar. Both CDs contain some private recordings from the 1930s - some great historical treasures.

A documentary was made by S. Leo Chioang and Mercedes Coats about Bill Tapia's life, titled To You Sweetheart,Aloha - Can Life Begin At 94? I love to see that documentary once - it looks great to me.

Bill Tapia hopes to celebrate his 100th birthday with a show, scedulded on the 18th of November at the Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro California. I wished I could be there !!

I love to share with you a fragment, Joergen used it in his contribution too, with Bill Tapia and Lyle Ritz live recorded at the 13th of June, 2004. This tune is also available as an audio track on the Duke of Uke CD. Hope you're as surprised as I was !!

Joergen wees ons deze zomer in één van zijn bijdragen op deze Keep Swinging weblog Ukulele Special op de muziek van Bill Tapia. Het filmfragment wat hij opgezocht had maakte me nieuwsgierig naar deze ukulelespeler. Afgelopen weekend speelde ik zijn twee laatste CDs, Tropical Swing en Duke of Uke. Wat een verrassing - zelden de ukulele zo relaxed en swingend horen bespelen.

Bill Tapia, voor vrienden Tappy, werd geboren op nieuwjaarsdag 1908, hetgeen dus betekent dat hij eind van dit jaar zijn 100ste verjaardag hoopt te vieren. Hij leerde zichzelf als kind de ukulele bespelen en hij herinnert zich nog goed hoe hij Stars and Stripes Forever speelde voor de Amerikaanse troepen, die gestationeerd waren op Hawaii in 1918 (!) vanwege de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Als 12 jarige gaat hij van school en gaat spelen bij plaatselijke vaudeville shows. De vergelijking met het leven van Oscar Aleman komt spontaan bij me boven borrelen, aangezien die ook als kind terecht kwam bij de vaudeville show en zichzelf cavaquinho leerde spelen ( Een soort Braziliaanse ukulele). Zowel Bill Tapia als Oscar Aleman vermaakten het publiek met het bespelen van hun instrument op de rug.

Toen een paar jaar geleden zijn vrouw Barbie en dochter Cleo overleden, pakte hij de ukulele weer ter hand en maakte hij op 94 jarige leeftijd de twee CDs, die ik hier voor me heb liggen: Tropical Swing (opgenomen 2002) en een jaar later Duke of Uke ( opgenomen 2003)

Je hoeft alleen maar naar het eerste nummer van de CD Duke of Uke te luisteren, All The Things You Are en je bent verkocht. Zo relaxed en jazzy heb ik de ukulele nog nooit gehoord; deze 95 jarige speelt jazz als een moderne jazzgitarist, begeleid door een ritmesectie met Byron Yasui op piano en Benny Chong op gitaar. Andere schitterende nummers zijn Black Orpheus, Happy Hula en een aantal meer Hawaiiaanse nummers als Hapa Haole Hula Girl en Hawaiian Medley op de Tropical Swing CD met o.a. Buck Gilles op steelgitaar. Beide CDs bevatten ook privéopnamen uit de jaren dertig - waardevolle historische documenten.

Er is een aantal jaar geleden een documentaire gemaakt door S. Leo Chioang en Mercedes Coats over Bill Tapia's leven, getiteld To You Sweetheart, Aloha - Can Life Begin At 94? Ik hoop deze documentaire nog eens op DVD te kunnen zien.

Bill Tapia hoopt zijn 100ste verjaardag uitgebreid te vieren met o.a. een optreden, gepland op 18 november in de Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro Californië. Wat zou ik daar graag bij zijn !!

Ik wil een filmfragment laten zien, hetzelfde dat Joergen in juli ook al gebruikte, waarin Bill Tapia en Lyle Ritz samen spelen tijdens een live optreden juni 2004. Genieten! De geluidsopname van dit optreden staat ook als laatste track op de Duke of Uke CD.
