First International Ukulele Festival Belsele

Next weekend, on the 5th of May 2007, the First International Ukulele Festival in Belsele ( a place in the northwestern part of Belgium) will be organised. Belsele is a little place between Antwerp and Ghent.
On that day everything revolves around this tiny instrument, the ukulele in all its variations. The festival starts at 12.00 o'clock and lasts until midnight. The festival is located at the 't Ey in Belsele.
Last, but not least, I love to point you to Ukulelazaza, a Dutchman, who lives within a stone's throw of the festival nowadays, plays the ukulele for years and performed at previous festivals as the Rotterdam String Festival. He shows at a filmed fragment below that he is pretty good at playing the ukulele. The complete program of the festival has a lot more surprises to offer.
This little instrument, made famous by the 1920s and 1930s vaudeville artists like Ukulele Ike and my all-time favorite Roy Smeck, ( ok, I will post his famous version of the Tiger Rag too) is a very accessible instrument, enjoyable for the whole family ( children younger then 12 have free admission). For their entertainment I posted a fragment of Sesame Street where Ernie and Monster show what to do with a broken ukulele. A great introduction for the young ones. Enjoy it !!

Op het programma staan verschillende optredens van internationaal beroemde ( en bijna beroemde) ukulelespelers gepland en een tentoonstelling van het Ukulogisch Museum. Verder zijn er workshops en een open podium, waar nu al, volgens de organisatoren, zelfs musici uit Japan op af zullen komen.

The program serves several live performances of international famous ( or near famous) ukulele players and groups, an exhibition of a collection rare ukuleles from all over the world in the Ukulogical Museum, workshops and an Open Mic Stage with guest from all over the world (including Japan).
The program, special made for this festival, will become a collectors item I guess. It contains cartoons, made by famous cartoonist.
The festival opens with a performance of Plein de Haricots, an English duo featuring Penny, the flapper girl and Craig Paice, who plays the ukulele, the guitar and the musical saw. A great duo that guarantees a lot of fun. One of my favorites is the Ukulélé Club de Paris, a French group directed by Cyril Lefebvre featuring our own Fay Lovsky. I heard her in concert some years ago in her program Eigen Weg and was fascinated by this unconventional versatile artist.

Op deze zonnige dag ( dat wordt tenminste beloofd ) draait alles om dit kleine instrument, de ukulele in al zijn verschijningsvormen. Het festival begint om 12.00 uur in 't Ey in Belsele en duurt tot middernacht. Op het programma staan verschillende optredens van internationaal beroemde ( en bijna beroemde) ukulelespelers gepland en een tentoonstelling van het Ukulogisch Museum. Verder zijn er workshops en een open podium, waar nu al, volgens de organisatoren, zelfs musici uit Japan op af zullen komen.
Het programmaboekje wordt een collectors item, volgens mij - het bevat, behalve het totale programma, ook een tiental cartoons van bekende tekenaars.
Het festival begint met een optreden van Plein de Haricots, een Engels duo gevormd door Penny, the flapper girl en Craig Paice, die ukulele, gitaar en zingende zaag bespeelt. Een opener die garant staat voor veel plezier. Eén van mijn favorieten is de Ukulélé Club de Paris, een Franse groep onder leiding van Cyril Lefebvre. Eén van de spelers is onze eigen Fay Lovsky. Ik hoorde haar een paar jaar geleden in een eigen programma Eigen Weg en raakte gefasineerd door deze onconventionele veelzijdige vrouw. Gerard Kuster, beter bekend als de Nederlandse Ukulele Ike zal de muziek van zijn grote Amerikaanse voorbeeld, Cliff Edwards, beter bekend als Ukulele Ike tot leven laten komen. Ik kan het niet laten om de bekende schitterende scene waarin Ukulele Ike zijn instrument bespeeld voor een lieftallige kettingrokende dame met jullie hieronder te delen.

De laatste muzikant, die ik noem ( het programma bevat nog meer verrassingen) is de ervaren ukulelespeler Ukulelazaza, een Nederlander, nu woonachtend op steenworpafstand van het festival. Hij was ook op eerdere festivals te beluisteren zoals het String Festival in Rotterdam. Van hem heb ik ook een fragment gevonden, waarin hij laat zien dat hij een ervaren muzikant is op de kleine gitaar. Ik vind het erg jammer deze keer niet op het festival te kunnen zijn vanwege een andere afspraak. Het kleine instrument, beroemd geworden in de jaren twintig en dertig van de vorige eeuw door vaudeville artiesten als Ukulele Ike en mijn favoriet Roy Smeck ( Ok dan van hem ook nog zijn beroemde versie van Tiger Rag) staat garant voor een fantastisch familie-evenement ( kinderen onder de twaalf hebben gratis toegang). Voor de jongsten onder laatste groep heb ik als afsluiting nog een filmpje gevonden waarin Ernie en Koekiemonster laten zien wat je met een gebroken ukulele moet doen. Een opwarmertje voor de jongsten onder ons !! Veel plezier er mee.
