Afgelopen maand verscheen het nieuwe album van de Belgische gitarist Philip Catherine op het Challenge Records label ( Philip Catherine plays Cole Porter)( Challenge Jazz CHR 70106). Het album is geheel gewijd aan de composities van Cole Porter, die bijna 50 jaar geleden overleed. Philip Catherine wordt begeleid door Karel Boehlee, one of the finest pianists I know (= Eén van de fijnste pianisten die ik ken), schrijft Hein Van de Geyn op de hoes; Philippe Aerts, die al jaren Catherine's vaste bassist is en Martijn Vink op slagwerk.

Op de hoes schrijft (ex) bassist Hein Van de Geyn, die vorig jaar herfst afscheid nam van zijn bas en Nederland en nu in Scarborough, Zuid-Afrika woont, opent met een tamelijk uitgebreide biografie van Cole Porter en breekt een lans voor zijn schitterende bijdragen aan het zgn. American Songbook. Zelfs als je nooit van Cole Porter gehoord hebt ( het schijnt dat de jeugd zijn naam niet meer zo goed kent) dan kun je niet om hem heen - zelfs popsterren spelen zijn composities.

Philip Catherine, oorspronkelijk geboren in Londen, oktober 1942, maar opgegroeid in Brussel, begon zijn carrière in de jaren zestig in Brussel in clubs als de Rose Noire, waar hij optrad met musici als Jack Sels en Fats Sadi en ontwikkelde hij zich in de afgelopen vijftig jaar van een sterk door Django beïnvloede gitarist tot een veelgevraagd begeleider en solist op de gitaar. Ik hou van zijn gitaarspel en zijn muziek. Eén van zijn laatste platen was het prachtige solo (!) album Guitars Two, dat hij als een duet met zichzelf speelde. Ook aan één van zijn laatste optredens in Porgy en Bess Terneuzen, ruim een jaar geleden, met pianist Bert van den Brink bewaar ik mooie herinneringen.

Cole Porter wrote more then one thousand songs. ( = Cole Porter schreef meer dan 1000 nummers), informeert Hein ons, but only the less known, not yet overplayed compositions, have been selected.(= maar alleen de wat minder bekende, niet doodgespeelde titels, hebben we uitgezocht.). In 2010 when I still lived in Europe, Philip would come to my house and we would go through many of Cole Porter's songs.(= In 2010, toen ik nog in Europa woonde, heb ik samen met Philip bij mij thuis heel wat nummers van Cole Porter door onze vingers laten gaan). Er werden uiteindelijk dertien nummers uitgezocht, waarvan er elf uiteindelijk op de cd Philip Catherine plays Cole Porter terecht gekomen zijn. Cole Porter (1891-1964) behoort tot die selecte groep van componisten en tekstschrijvers, die het American Songbook van de 20ste eeuw gevuld hebben. Als je jazz speelt of luistert naar muziek dan kun je niet om Cole Porter heen. Hij schreef tientallen hits, die op ons trommelvlies zijn blijven kleven: I Love Paris - Night and Day - I Love You Samantha - Begin the Beguine - Too Darn Hot - What Is This Thing Called Love - Anything Goes en In the Still of the Night. Sommige nummers op het album zijn heel bekend, maar krijgen een verfrissend bad als Philip ze onder handen neemt. Een voorbeeld van zo'n nummer is From This Moment On of In The Still of the Night. Het nummer Let's Do It, Let's Fall in Love, dat op het album als 7de nummer is toegevoegd, is zijn eerste compositie waar hij echt succes mee had in 1928 in de musical Paris ( of zoals ze dat toen noemden: a play with songs (= Een toneelstuk met liedjes). Het slotnummer Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye dateert uit de jaren veertig en hoorde bij de Broadwaymusical Seven Lively Arts. Alle grote namen in de jazz hebben dit stuk in handen gehad en hun uitvoeringen zijn wereldberoemd geworden: Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald, Sonny Rollins, Stan Kenton, John Coltrane en dan nu, last but not least, ook Philip Catherine. Vraag me alstublieft niet naar mijn eigen voorkeuren .......... als je het album hebt beluisterd zul je begrijpen dat dat een onmogelijke opgaaf is - de elf nummers krijgen in Philip's handen alle dezelfde behandeling: oprecht, betoverend en lyrisch. Philip met zijn gitaar en, niet te vergeten Karel Boehlee aan de vleugel, maken deze plaat tot een tijdloos document - een plaat die in elke collectie hoort te zitten.

Het nieuwste album van Philip Catherine bewijst mar weer eens wat een geweldig gitarist hij is .......... Eerlijk gezegd, had ik eerst wat twijfels, toen ik de titel las: .. plays Cole Porter. Oh nee, dacht ik, toch niet weer één? doelend op de tientallen platen die al verschenen zijn in de schijnbaar onuitputtelijke serie "plays/sings Cole Porter"; albums volgezongen of -gespeeld door grote namen als Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald of Dionne Warwick ( al dan niet opgeleukt met een bos strijkers). Maar die angst bleek ongegrond. Deze plaat voldoet aan geen van alle vooroordelen die ik over dit soort platen heb; geen strijkers, geen doodgespeelde overbekende melodiëen..... dit is een echte Philip Catherine gitaarplaat geworden en veel meer dan zomaar .... a tribute to. Vladimir Cosma, een bekende Oosteuropese componist zegt op de hoes: How lucky for Cole Porter to be in the golden hands of Philip Catherine! (= Wat een geluksvogel is Cole Porter, door in de gouden handen van Philip beland te zijn). Een tijdloos document! Keep Swinging houdt ervan om dit soort schitterende platen onder de aandacht te brengen. Deze plaat wordt een klassieker - geen twijfel mogelijk. Last month the latest album by Belgian guitar player Philip Catherine has been released by Challenge Records. It is fully dedicated to the well known songwriter and composer Cole Porter, who passed away almost 50 years ago. Philip Catherine is accompanied by Karel Boehlee one of the finest pianists I know, Hein Van de Geyn writes in the liner notes; Philppe Aerts, who is Philip's regular bass player and Martijn Vink drums.

Philip Catherine, born in London in October 1942, started his career in the 1960s in Brussels in venues like the Rose Noire, where he performed with musicians like Jack Sels and Fats Sadi and developed during these 50 years in music as a sought after accompanist and performer. I love his music and the way he plays the guitar. One of his last records, his solo album Guitars Two , has been reviewed here and I joined several concerts in which he participated with musicians like the May 2010 concert with Bert Van Den Brink.

Cole Porter wrote more then one thousand songs, Hein Van de Geyn informs us in the liner notes, but only the less known, not yet overplayed compositions, have been selected. In 2010 when I still lived in Europe, Philip would come to my house and we would go through many of Cole Porter's songs. Thirteen songs were selected and eleven tunes were used for the album.

Cole Porter (1891-1964) was one of the outstanding composers and lyricists of the 20th century. Some million sellers he composed were: I Love Paris - Night and Day - I Love You Samantha - Begin the Beguine - Too Darn Hot - What is this Thing Called Love - Anything Goes and In the Still of the Night. Some of the tunes selected are well known, but never boring, like From This Moment On or In The Still of the Night. The tune Let's Do It, Let's Fall in Love, to be found on the album as track 7 is the first Cole Porter composition that became a theatre hit in the 1928 play with songs Paris. The final track Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye dates from the 1940s and was part of the Broadway-play Seven Lively Arts. It was recorded by all great jazz musicians of the second part of the 20th century, like Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald, Sonny Rolling, Stan Kenton, John Coltrane and, last but not least, Philip Catherine. Don't ask me what tracks are my favourites, as I really don't know. Philip's guitar and Karel's piano make these tunes timeless and a great album to have in your collection.

The latest album of Philip Catherine once more proves what a great guitar player he is ............ To be honest, the title .. plays Cole Porter first got on my nerves ... oh no, not another "plays/sings ....", like the numerous meant for the best ... plays/sings Cole Porter albums ( Frank Sinatra or Ella Fitzgerald or Dionne Warwick or ...) with overplayed songs, tributes to this great composer. But when I played myself this new Philip Catherine album I was convinced that this one was more then just .... a tribute to. As Vladimir Cosma says in the liner notes: How lucky for Cole Porter to be in the golden hands of Philip Catherine! A timeless document!
