In 2009 verscheen een nieuwe CD van het Rein De Graaff Trio, met opnamen die ruim 15 jaar geleden gemaakt werden met twee legendarische westcoast muzikanten Conte Candoli (1927-2001) en Bob Cooper (1925-1993). Beide muzikanten kwamen naar Europa om op te treden met het Rein De Graaff Trio tijdens een korte tournee getiteld de West Coast Wailers.

Bob Cooper was het jaar ervoor ook in Nederland geweest om o.a. op te treden met het Metropool Orkest samen met Bud Shank, uitgebracht op het album: A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing. Conte Candoli was eveneens in Nederland om op te treden met de North Sea Big Band. Rein De Graaff, autodidact op piano heeft al een indrukwekkende carriere achter de rug, met name met het begeleiden van Amerikaanse bebopmuzikanten tijdens zijn Stoomcursussen Bebop. In januari 1993 haalde hij beide coryfeën naar Nederland om op te laten treden met zijn trio bestaande uit hemzelf op piano, Koos Serierse op bas en Eric Ineke achter het slagwerk. Op 1 februari 1993 werd een optreden vastgelegd, waarschijnlijk voor de radio, in het restaurant van de KRO in Hilversum en deze is nu uitgebracht door Timeless Record. Zowel Bob als Conte speelden eertijds, vanaf eind jaren veertig, samen in het orkest van Stan Kenton en ze zijn te horen' in verschillende radioopnamen, die bewaard gebleven zijn. In de jaren vijftig en zestig komt daar het beroemde Howard Rumsey Lighthouse Orchestra bij. Ik schreef te horen cursief, omdat, om begrijpelijke redenen, hun inbreng in het massieve geluid van dit soort orkesten moeilijk te identificeren is. Dankzij Rein komen hier beide muzikanten tot hun recht in een kleinere bezetting. Het Bob Cooper-Conte Candoli Quintet ( juni 1993) (VSOP #93)

In de zomer van 1993 traden Bob en Conte weer samen op in de Hyatt Newporter Club in Newport Beach (Ca); waarschijnlijk was het samen optreden in een kleine setting goed bevallen. Het kwintet werd hier begeleid door Ross Tompkins aan de piano, John Leitham op bas en Paul Kreibich slagwerk. Het zou één van de laatste optredens van Bob Cooper worden; zes weken later overleed hij. Voor zover ik heb kunnen nagaan was dit de enige keer dat ze zo samen in een kwintetbezetting werden vastgelegd - het Rein De Graaff Trio uitgave verdubbelt dit aantal. Op beide platen komen een aantal dezelfde nummers voor zoals We'll Be Together Again, Gillespie's Ow!, and Thinking of You. En om eerlijk te zijn ................. Waarom ik van liveopnamen houd, manifesteert zich in de Lex Lammen opnamen in Hilversum met het Rein de Graaff trio, namelijk het feit dat men zich niet gebonden weet aan de speelduurbeperkingen van de geluidsdrager, zoals de 78-toerenplaat van vroeger. Op de plaat Thinking of You zijn bijna alle nummers zo'n 10 minuten lang, zodat iedereen alle kans krijgt om uitgebreid te soleren en het nummer de tijd krijgt om op te bouwen en af te sluiten. De Newport Beach opname heeft dat weer minder - hierop staan 9 nummers. Ik vind het moeilijk om aan te geven welk nummer op de plaat van Rein mijn voorkeur heeft. We'll Be Together Again bevat prachtig spel van Bob Cooper, waarin je kan horen dat hij goed naar Lester Young heeft geluisterd; Conte Candoli schittert vooral in Loverman, waar hij op gestopte trompet te horen is. Ik vraag me af waarom deze opnamen zo lang op de plank zijn blijven liggen, of zegt dit iets over het rijke archief verstopt in de kelders bij Timeless, hoe dan ook - opnamen die het meer dan waard zijn om heruitgebracht te worden en die, in mijn opinie, behoren tot het beste uit de serie Stoomcursussen Bebop De CD is o.a. te koop bij Timeless Records.

Rein De Graaff, geboren in Groningen in oktober 1942, is tamelijk onbekend gebleven buiten ons land en dat is onterecht. Hij leidde eigen groepen vanaf eind jaren vijftig. Zijn Rein de Graaff trio, met Eric Ineke op slagwerk en Koos Serierse op bas ( de afgelopen tien jaar is dat Marius Beets) begon in de jaren tachtig met het begeleiden van Amerikanen die naar Nederland kwamen in de zgn. Stoomcursus Bebop .......... Graag vertel ik meer over deze concerten van Rein de Graaff en zijn mannen in de Keep Swinging blog en het zou zonde zijn als je deze zou missen. Last year a new album by the Rein De Graaff Trio was released: a "new" album, with "dated" recordings from two legendary west coast musicians, Conte Candoli (1927- 2001) and Bob Cooper (1925-1993). Both musicians came to Europe to join the Rein De Graaff Trio in a small tour labeled as the West Coast Wailers.

Bob Cooper had been in The Netherlands in the previous year to play with the Metropole Orchestra together with Bud Shank, which was released on an album titled A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing. Conte also visited Holland in 1992 during the same period performing with his brother Pete with the North Sea Big Band. Rein De Graaff, a self-taught piano player with an impressive career, invited, during the late 1980s up to now, US musicians for short tours along Dutch and Belgian venues. In January - February 1993 Bob Cooper and Conte Candoli joined the Rein De Graaff Trio, featuring Rein at the piano, Koos Serierse bass and Eric Ineke drums. On the first of February, 1993 a concert for the Dutch KRO radio networks, was recorded by producer Lex Lammen in the top restaurant of the studios in Hilversum (The Netherlands) and has now, more then fifteen years later, been released by Timeless Records. Both Bob as Conte played together in the Stan Kenton Orchestra since the late 1940s and they are recorded at several broadcasts during this period. During the 1950s and 60s both men still played together in the Kenton band and in the Howard Rumsey Lighthouse Orchestra - large extensive groups which makes it hard to identify their contributions ..... It is great to compare these Hilversum recordings with the Bob Cooper - Conte Candoili Quintet ( feat. Bob and Conte in the front line with Ross Tompkins at the piano, John Leitham at the bass and Paul Kreibich drums) VSOP release showed above. It would become one of Bob Cooper's last recorded concerts at the Hyatt Newporter club in Newport Beach (Ca) six weeks before he passed away. As far as I have found, it is the only known recording, except the Rein De Graaff Trio release of course, where they play together in such a small setting. Maybe the Hyatt Newporter session was a continuation from the Rein De Graaff concept bringing these two giants of Westcoast jazz together. Fact is that several tracks are equal on both albums: We'll Be together Again, Gillespie's Ow!, and the title tune Thinking of You. To be honest ........... I like the Rein De Graaff Trio session more then the ones recorded in Newport Beach ......... but, okay ...... , the cover of the VSOP # 93 is more funny ...... 1 - 1 Koos Serierse. What I like from live recordings are the extensive solos and the tunes are never limited to the ordinary 3 to 5 minutes playing times. This gives the band the opportunity to develop the tune in all its aspects. On this Rein De Graaff album most tunes have an average of 10 minutes playing time. It is hard to tell what tunes are favorite: .... Maybe We'll Be Together Again with a great role for Bob Cooper. He has a strong Lesterian sound I like very much. Conte Candoli, who's ancestors are from Italy, is great in a muted trumpet solo in Loverman .........

I don't know why these recordings have been unissued for such a long time, as it is, in my opinion, one that belongs to the best in Rein's series of Stoomcursus Bebop ( = translated in the liner notes as: Crash Course Bebop) labeled as the Westcoast Wailers; Maybe it tells something about the rich Wim Wigt archive still untouched in his basement. Let's hope it opens the door more often in the near future ..... Try to get your self a copy - it's available at Timeless Records.

His Rein De Graaff trio, featuring Eric Ineke on drums and Koos Serierse on bass ( for the last decade: Marius Beets) started in the 1980s up to now accompaning American musicians visiting Europe for its Stoomcurssusen Bebop tours ..........
