CLARENCE WILLIAMS, BIJNA VERGETEN?

Op 8 oktober 1898, 110 jaar geleden, werd Clarence Williams in Plaquemine Delta, Louisiana (USA) geboren. Zijn famjlie runde een hotel en zelf begon hij als pianist in het Red Light District Storyville in New Orleans. Daar speelde hij 's avonds en 's nachts en runde overdag o.a. een wasserij. Hij probeerde altijd één van de eersten te zijn die de nieuwste hits kon spelen en runde, samen met Armand J. Piron een kleine uitgeverij van bladmuziek. Omdat veel mensen uit de middenklasse een piano in huis hadden en nog geen gramofoon, was dat een lucratief handeltje, waarmee ze langs de huizen gingen. Ze openden zelfs een winkel in Chicago en New York.

Hij organiseerde in de jaren twintig plaatopnamen en probeerde talentvolle musici in de studio te krijgen, zoals die ene keer in januari 1925 toen hij Louis Armstrong en Sidney Bechet kon strikken voor een opname met zijn Blue Five voor Okeh. Ze namen het nummer Cakewalking Babies From Home op. In de band speelden Louis Armstrong op cornet, Charlie Irvis op trombone, Sidney Bechet op sopraansax, Clarence Williams achter de piano en Buddy Christian op banjo. Eva Taylor, waarmee hij in 1921 getrouwd was, nam de zang voor haar rekening. Luister naar Cake Walking Babies From Home.

Zowel Louis Armstrong als Sidney Bechet stelen de show in dit nummer en daarom ben ik ook nog op zoek gegaan naar zo'n ander schitterend nummer met Clarence Williams, waaruit blijkt wat voor schitterende muziek hij in de jaren twintig maakte.

Wat te denken van In Our Cottage To Love (met die heerlijke droge meppen op de trom en die felle accenten op het bekken door Floyd Cassey. Geweldig !), of If You Like Me Like I Like You (alleen al voor de titel) of Breeze (Blow My Baby Back To Me) (wat een heerlijke bluesmelodie) of Cushion Foot Stomp door zijn Washboard Band uit april 1927 met die schitterende tubasolo van Cyrus St. Clair. Dat wordt' m! Cushion Foot Stomp ter ere van Clarence Williams 110de geboortedag.

Is het eigenlijk geen schande dat voor de jongeren onder ons de naam Clarence Williams niet meer is dan een naam, bijna vergeten, zo'n ouwe knakker ( hij was tijdens deze opnamen overigens net in de dertig) die op van die ouwe bakelieten platen (?) speelde? Clarence Williams verdient beter: hij was één van die groten uit de begin tijd van de jazz die meegeholpen hebben de stijl groot te maken en die de jazz hebben helpen ontwikkelen tot dat wat ze nu is. Clarence Williams overleed november 1965.

JEFF HAMILTON TRIO in PORGY EN BESS Aanstaande donderdag 16 oktober 2008 treedt in Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen, in een exclusief concert voor de België en Nederland, de befaamde drummer Jeff Hamilton op met zijn trio. Zijn trio bestaat uit hemzelf op slagwerk, Tamir Hendelman op piano en Christoph Luty op bas. Jeff Hamilton hoeft, denk ik, geen nadere informatie. Hij speelde o.a. in het beroemde Monty Alexander Trio ( Monty Alexander - John Clayton - Jeff Hamilton) dat in juni 1976 furore maakte op het Montreux Jazz Festival en dit, dertig jaar later, op 19 november 2006, in een gedenkwaardig concert in Porgy en Bess, nog eens dunnetjes overdeed.

DOCTOR JAZZ FAIR Fall 2008
Last weekend, Saturday the 11th of October 2008, the 88th Doctor Jazz Dag was scedulded in Wageningen, a city in the centre of the Netherlands. This meeting is known as the Doctor Jazz Reunion and is organized two times a year. Hunderds of jazz record collectors, from The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, visited the fair scedulded in the morning and in the afternoon jazz bands played their traditional jazz. I wrote about that in a previous blog: Doctor Jazz Dag.
It is always a surprise what you'll find on a record fair. CD's, second-handed for one or two euros or new copies of recent releases, are for the months to come ..... I found some great books like one about the history of music and its musicians in Breda, a small city in the south of The Netherlands. Some of you may know that this place was the capital of traditional jazz, the hottest place in the south, in the Netherlands from the 1970s onwards for several decades. The Oude Stijl Jazz Festivals ( = Traditional Jazz Festivals) of Breda were famous all around the world. The book is titled: Bredase muziekschets van de 20e eeuw (Deel 1 - Amusementsmuziek - Jazzmuziek - Jazzorganisaties) by Jack van Elewout. A second book I could obtain is the great informative bio-discography "King Oliver" revised by Laurie Wright: a thorough study like "Fats in Facts", a great source of information about the great cornet player and band leader Joe King Oliver. I also found some great albums, like the LPs shown above: A SteepleChase: Brew Moore and two Riverside's with Art Blakey's Caravan and Cannonball Adderley . I also bought some LPs I had thirty years ago, some nostalgic finds, like the Rotterdam Bill Brookers' Jug Band and the Almelo and Nice Site as played by Johan Bijkerk, the stride piano player of the Hot Dogs.

I shouldn't forget to mention a great album by Ack Van Rooijen and one by Tal Farlow and a 2LP album titled Jazz Från det Svenska 70-talet, which contains a compilation of 1970s Swedish jazz. But I'm really happy with the 2LP-album, titled Don Ellis at Fillmore; an album which contains great music, but also has some emotional value for me. Well, the Wageningen fair is now history ..... we'll have to do with it until the 4th of april 2009. I'm sure I found enough stuff to fill blogs for the long winter period to come !

JEFF HAMILTON TRIO in PORGY EN BESS JAZZ CLUB
Next Thursday, the 16th of October 2008, the great percussionist Jeff Hamilton will perform, at an exclusive concert for the Netherlands and Belgium, at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen in the south of the country, close to the Belgian border. His trio features himself on drums, Tamir Hendelman at the piano and Christoph Luty on bass. Jeff Hamilton needs no further introduction, I guess. He played in the famous Monty Alexander Trio ( Monty Alexander - John Clayton - Jeff Hamilton) that is remembered for its legendary concert at the 1976 Montreux Jazz Festival and, thirthy years ago, November 2006, was re-made at a great concert at the Porgy en Bess club.
