Blue Flamingo: Collector of Dreams
( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.) ZEELAND NAZOMERFESTIVAL BLUE FLAMINGO: GROSSIER IN DROMEN
Jazz music seems to be not-done nowadays.... young people have their own music - Jazz music doesn't fit into their culture. Jazz music is for eldery grey men. Jazz isn't dead - it only smells funny. Jazz music has left public places like radio and tv; dance halls and record shops - Record shops? Maybe I should say media shops? You can now download DVD's and CDs as digital files from the internet to store on your iPod – Jazz in bits and bytes... But..... there are some exceptions. A lot of young people learn to play Jazz at the various Dutch and Belgian Schools of Music. Volunteers organize concerts in clubs to share their music and fanatic jazz fans share their passion for jazz on their weblogs. In The Netherlands people like DJ Maestro or Madlib have released mixed jazz records, which seem to be very popular and Jules Deelder, the former Nachtburgemeester (= Night Mayor) of Rotterdam, as he was called, plays his LP-records on festivals: Old Wine in New Bottles.

The Rotterdam record collector Ziya Ertekin loves to share his recordings by playing it. No LPs nor CDs, but "old fashion" 78 rpm recordings from his own collection. He plays his records on a 1957 Garrard RC-88 with a Fender Vibroberb for some extra amplification. His most favourite records are now reissued on a CD released on the Excelsior label.
On this album three long "mixes", titled: Oriental Nitty Gritty - The Spanish Tinge & The French Connection and Ritmo & Blues. Today I love to tell you about the first and last mix: on Thursday I'll point you to the second mix in: Blue Flamingo: The Spanish Tinge.
The first compilation is an almost 20 minute’s mix of hot jazz, with some oriental flavours...... During the 1920s people were anxious to learn more about exotic places and these exotic places inspired musicians: think about the Hawaiian style music and the numerous tunes, with "Arab", titles like Egyptian Ella and The Sheik of Araby, but Ziya's choices are not so obvious: Lil Armstrong's Swing Orchestra plays Oriental Swing; the Mills Blue Rhythm Band continues with Congo Caravan and Abdullah is one of the more unknown tunes by Fats Waller. And of course, the King of the Jungle: Duke Ellington with his 1929 version of Arabian Lover. Most tunes selected are from the 1930s with the first track: Casbah by Sidney Bechet's Circle Seven which is from the last day of January 1949. Great tunes - well transfered to CD...............
The third mix, labelled as Ritmo & Blues is most early 1950s Rhythm and Blues stuff. This music, labelled as Jive in the 1940s, was developed by musicians like Louis Jordan, who founded his Tympany Five. In the early 1950s Rhythm & Blues artists, like Charles Brown and Lloyd Glenn were playing this music. They were, like so many other musicians, fascinated by the Mambo and you can hear this in the tunes selected.
On this part of the album you can find several early 1950s Rhythm & blues artists who used these Mambo rhythms in their recordings: The Moonglows play Tempting in its 1956 version, when 78rpm recordings were almost gone in the record shops. The tune Daddy Rollin' Stone by Otis Blackwell became a hit in Jamaica and beyond early 1950s. The selection ends with a groovy version of Swinging the Mambo by Vin Strong on organ, recorded in 1954. And if you are a bit overwhelmed after listening to this selection ( like me) and you forget to shut off your CD-player Ziya will bring you a small surprise ................ Jelly Roll Morton playing for you: La Paloma with ..... the Spanish Tinge. You can read more about that in Blue Flamingo: The Spanish Tinge !!

ZEELAND NAZOMERFESTIVAL

Old Wine in New Bottles ( = Oude wijn in Nieuwe Zakken.)
Blue Flamingo: Grossier in Dromen.
