Last week I played myself his 1949 hit Saturday Night Fish Fry, which was released by Decca as a lengthly tune divided in two parts on both sides of an 78rpm record.

Louis Jordan was born in Brinkley Arkansas (USA) July 1908 and passed away in Los Angeles, February 1975. Next month, on the 8th of July 2008, we will celebrate the fact that he was born 100 years ago. Before he founded his own group, the Tympany Five late 1930s he played with the Chick Webb Orchestra. This Tympany Five played a very rhythmically swinging kind of music, based on the blues and boogie woogie and this style is labeled as jive music, a kind of proto-R & B (= Rhythm and Blues). He had some great hits during the 1940s, thanks to the jukeboxes that were very popular in those days. One of those hits was Saturday Night Fish Fry, a Jordan - Walsh composition. Louis Jordan had a million seller with that tune and it was one of the tunes I loved to play when I was a teenager.
The song itself tells about a typically New Orleans event, a Saturday Night Fish Fry: If you've ever been down to New Orleans - then you can understand just what I mean - All through the week it's as quiet as a mouse - But on Saturday night they go from house to house / You don't have to pay when you only mention - If you're a cook or a waiter or a good musician - If you just happen to be passing by - Stop in at the Saturday Night Fish Fry.
At these gatherings people could enjoy themselves: drinking booze, eat fried fish and dance all night long.
It was rocking, it was rocking - You never seen such scuffling and shuffling - 'Till the break of dawn. As these parties were illegal, the police could come and arrest everybody and that happens in the song too: Somebody hollered 'Better get outta here, this is a raid' / I didn't know we were breaking the law - Somebody reached over and hit me on the jaw - They had locked up from the front and the back - Putting them in the wagon like potato sacks.
All people where brought to jail ...
Well we headed for jail in a dazed condition - They booked each one of us on suspicion - My chick came down and she went my bail - Finally got me outta that rotten jail.
The singer sighs that he'll never visit a frish fry any more ...... as he don't wants a fist in his eye again !!
The number was actually first recorded by Eddie Wiliams and his Brown Buddies, but Louis Jordan made a hit of it. It has been recorded by numerous other musicians, like Frankie Ford ( 1961 ), Georgie Fame (1984) and Lou Rawls ( 1993) to name some. It has been labeled as one of the first rock and roll tunes. Well never mind - I still like it very much.

Afgelopen week speelde ik weer eens zijn nummer Saturday Night Fish Fry, de gigantische hit uit 1949, die in twee delen uitgebracht werd op beide kanten van een Decca 78-toeren plaat. Louis Jordan werd geboren in Brinkley Arkansas (USA) in juli 1908 en overleed in Los Angeles in februari 1975. Volgende maand, op 8 juli 2008, herdenken we zijn 100ste geboortedag. Voordat hij zijn groep, the Tympany Five, oprichtte, eind jaren dertig, speelde hij bij het Chick Webb orkest. Deze Tympany Five speelde een soort ritmische swingende dansmuziek, die gebasseerd was op de blues, de boogie woogie en ook wel jive muziek werd genoemd, een soort voorloper van de Rhythm and Blues.
