Freddie Redd in Sweden

Some week ago I posted a contribution about Tommy Porter's album Hard Funk released by Lonehill Jazz.(Lonehill Jazz LHJ10216). These recordings were made in Sweden during his 1956 tour. The piano player of the group was Freddie Redd. During this trip to Sweden Freddie Redd made recordings now available on the Lonehill CD Freddie Redd in Sweden. ( Lonehill Jazz LHJ10299 )
Freddie Redd, born in New York City in May 1928, is a selftaught piano player that started to play the piano when he had heard Bud Powell playing in 1946. He was fascinated by Bud Powell, whose music he tried to copy. He even tried to imitate Bud Powell's haircut, like the part cut in his hair and the long sideburns. Bud really got me started. I'd never heard a pianist play quite like that - the remarkably fluent single lines and the pretty chords ..... He started in a small group led by Johnny Miller and toured with Cootie Williams. In 1952 he played briefly with Oscar Pettiford and Charlie Mingus in New York City. You can find him as the piano player in recording sessions with Art Farmer, Gigi Gryce and Gene Ammons. The first session under his own name were made in Hackensack NJ (USA), where the Rudy Van Gelder studios where located, with his trio, featuring Freddie Redd on piano, John Ore at the bass and Ron Jefferson on drums. These recordings from February 1955 are now available as bonus tracks on the Lonehill Jazz CD Freddie Redd in Sweden.
In 1956 Swedish trumpet player Rolf Ericson organized a tour for six months through Europe with an all-American rhythm section, featuring Duke Jordan, John Simmons and Art Taylor and Cecil Payne the alto and baritone saxophone player, but, although these musicians were experts in jazz they also had serious drug problems, so the tour was no success. Although the musicians played now and then ( one concert in Sundsvall June 1956 has been released recently) Rolf Ericson had to fire these men and had to find replacements. He invited Freddie Redd, Tommy Potter and Joe Harris to come to Europe and to continue the tour with Swedish jazz musicians.

I love to share with you a fragment of this film, where you can see Freddie Redd behind the upright piano, a young Jackie McLean on alto saxophone, Michael Mattos on bass and Larry Ritchie on drums. A great fragment !!

Een paar weken geleden besteedde ik aandacht aan een schitterend album, gespeeld door Tommy Porter, getiteld Hard Funk, uitgebracht op het Lonehill Jazz label.( Lonehill Jazz LHJ10216 ). Deze opnamen waren gemaakt in Zweden tijdens een tournee in 1956. De pianist van deze groep was Freddie Redd. Ik vind het leuk om een stukje film van die film te laten zien, waarop je Freddie Redd ziet achter een oude piano, spelend tijdens foto- of filmopnamen, met een nog jonge Jackie McLean op alto, Michael Mattos op bas en Larry Ritchie op slagwerk. Een heerlijk fragment !
