Freddie Redd in Sweden

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
Some week ago I posted a contribution about Tommy Porter's album Hard Funk
released by Lonehill Jazz.(Lonehill Jazz LHJ10216). These recordings were made in Sweden during his 1956 tour. The piano player of the group was Freddie Redd. During this trip to Sweden Freddie Redd made recordings now available on the Lonehill CD Freddie Redd in Sweden. ( Lonehill Jazz LHJ10299 )

Freddie Redd, born in New York City in May 1928, is a selftaught piano player that started to play the piano when he had heard Bud Powell playing in 1946. He was fascinated by Bud Powell, whose music he tried to copy. He even tried to imitate Bud Powell's haircut, like the part cut in his hair and the long sideburns. Bud really got me started. I'd never heard a pianist play quite like that - the remarkably fluent single lines and the pretty chords ..... He started in a small group led by Johnny Miller and toured with Cootie Williams. In 1952 he played briefly with Oscar Pettiford and Charlie Mingus in New York City. You can find him as the piano player in recording sessions with Art Farmer, Gigi Gryce and Gene Ammons. The first session under his own name were made in Hackensack NJ (USA), where the Rudy Van Gelder studios where located, with his trio, featuring Freddie Redd on piano, John Ore at the bass and Ron Jefferson on drums. These recordings from February 1955 are now available as bonus tracks on the Lonehill Jazz CD Freddie Redd in Sweden.
In 1956 Swedish trumpet player Rolf Ericson organized a tour for six months through Europe with an all-American rhythm section, featuring Duke Jordan, John Simmons and Art Taylor and Cecil Payne the alto and baritone saxophone player, but, although these musicians were experts in jazz they also had serious drug problems, so the tour was no success. Although the musicians played now and then ( one concert in Sundsvall June 1956 has been released recently) Rolf Ericson had to fire these men and had to find replacements. He invited Freddie Redd, Tommy Potter and Joe Harris to come to Europe and to continue the tour with Swedish jazz musicians.

Still from the film The Connection (1961)
Six recording sessions were organized during this tour all in September 1956, three as Tommy Potter's Quintet and Sextet. These tracks are available on Tommy Porter's Hard Funk; and three as the Freddie Redd Trio. These recordings were released in Sweden as Freddie Redd in Sweden and now reissued on the CD of the same name. A surprise on this album are two live tracks made in Folkers Park in Värnamo (Sweden); these are the recordings I refered to in my Tommy Potter contribution; they are now available on CD.

Freddie Redd made some great Blue Note recordings late 1950s when he had returned to the US and played in the 1961 film The Connection. I love to share with you a fragment of this film, where you can see Freddie Redd behind the upright piano, a young Jackie McLean on alto saxophone, Michael Mattos on bass and Larry Ritchie on drums. A great fragment !!

( Lonehill Jazz LHJ10299 )

Freddie Redd, geboren in New York City in mei 1928, leerde zichzelf piano spelen, toen hij in 1946 Bud Powell had horen spelen. Bud really got me started. I'd never heard a pianist play quite like that - the remarkably fluent single lines and the pretty chords .....

Tommy Potter's Hard Funk

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
Last year I posted several contributions about musicians, that seem to be almost forgotten now, mostly due to the fact that they were "just
" sidemen in large orchestras or groups and never got the opportunity to display themselves in solos or own recordings, like Frank Foster, Bill Harris, Frank Morgan or Gigi Gryce. This time I love to introduce you to a great bass player, Tommy Potter, labeled in the 1960 New Edition of the Encyclopedia of Jazz by Leonard Feathers as One of the first and best bass products of the bop generartion.

Tommy Potter-Charlie Parker

Tommy Potter, born in September 1915 and passed away March 1988, started his career as piano and guitar player, but aged 25 he started to play the bass. He met Charlie Parker early 1940s and together with piano player John Malachi they bcame members of the Billy Eckstine Band.
He became the bass player in the regular Charlie Parker quintet late 1940s and you can find him on a lot of bebop recordings from that period with great names like Bud Powell, Wardel Gray, Earl Hines and Stan Getz. In the early 1950s bebop had also entered Europe, and, due to the fact that Sweden had not been conquered by the German, a "modern styled" bebop scene developed. It all started with the first Americans visiting Sweden late 1940s, like Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody and Chubby Jackson and his Fifth Dimensional Jazz Group. Swedish musicians, like Rolf Ericson and Stan Hasselgard left for the States. In 1956 Tommy Potter, Freddie Redd, Benny Bailey (I heard him 10 years ago as a guest player with the Piet Noordijk Quartet at the Stadsschouwburg in Middelburg, in the southwestern part of The Netherlands), and Joe Harris left the States to play in Sweden with musicians like the before mentioned trumpet player Rolf Ericson, trombone player Ake Persson, Gunnar "Hacke" Bjorksten, Stig Gabrielsson and Erik Norstorm on reeds.

Tommy Potter-Charlie Parker-Dizzy Gillespie-John Coltrane

They recorded three sessions, between the 10th and 16th of September 1956, all in Stockholm. These tunes were all originally released as singles or EPs and six were released as a 25 cm LP titled Hard Funk. This LP and five more tracks from these sessions are now available on a Lonehill Jazz release Tommy Potter's Hard Funk. Although Tommy Potter stayed active in music until the mid 1960s, and recorded with numerous men like Tyree Glenn, Buck Clayton, Al Cohn and Zoot Sims, Jimmy McPartland and Buddy Tate, these recordings are the only ones under his own name.
Tommy Potter-Stan Getz

Not all the September 1956 recordings have been reissued yet. Lonehill Jazz says to reissue the remaining tracks later including a live recording made at Folkets Park, Stockholm on the 30th of July 1956, that has been discovered recently. I'm anxious to hear these tracks too.
This Tommy Potter's Hard Funk CD is one of my best buys from 2007. What a great reording !! Try to get yourself a copy. ( Lonehill Jazz LHJ10216 )

I love to finish this contribution with two fragments of the 1964 Charlie Parker Tribute Tour Tommy Potter made with musicans like Sonny Stitt, Walter Bishop & Kenny Clarke. Enjoy Lover Man and Little Suede Shoes

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

Frank Foster , Bill Harris, Frank Morgan of Gigi Gryce. Deze keer een groot, onbekend gebleven bassist, Tommy Porter, in de New Edition of the Encyclopedia of Jazz van Leonard Feathers uit 1960 beschreven als One of the first and best bass products of the bop generation.

Tommy Potter-Charlie Parker-Dizzy Gillespie-John Coltrane.

Luister naar Lover Man en Little Suede Shoes
