The Jazz Crusaders

A few weeks ago I found the CD Chile Con Soul by the Jazz Crusaders at a sale and I bought it, although I felt bad about it. What about those Jazz Crusaders? Aren't they a funky soul band nowadays? The Chile Con Soul recordings are from 1965. I was right, but my feelings about this record were unfounded.
The Jazz Crusaders were founded as a Houston high school student band in 1961 by muscians like Wilton Felder ( tenor saxophone), Hesbert Hooper, nicknamed Stix, drums, Joe Sample, piano player and Wayne Henderson trombone. They changed their names in 1971 in The Crusaders, and, I was right, since that date they don't play the kind of jazz I like.
The Jazz Crusaders were augmented for this Pacific Chile Con Soul LP by Hubert Laws on flute, Clare Fischer at the organ, Al McKibbon on bass and some congas and other Latin American percussion instruments. Hubert Laws grew up in the late 1950s with the members of the original Jazz Crusaders before he moved to New York City. This is a kind of reunion, you could call it. In New York he specialized in the Latin music and so it isn't so strange that this album became a rather strange mix from soul jazz and latin rhythms. I like the tracks: The Breeze and I - Latin Bit and the opening tune Agua Dulce (Sweetwater). As the liner notes read: Fans of hard bop as well as fans of Latin Music can find much to appreciate in this album.
Wayne Henderson is still active with his group The Jazz Crusaders (indeed - the word Jazz retuned in the name) and I found a film fragment of the group playing at the Houston International Festival this year, but I don't like the music - it's a kind of funky soul jazz. During this festival Wayne gave an interview where he talks about the start of his career, about the early times of the Jazz Crusaders.

Een paar weken geleden kocht ik tijdens een uitverkoop een CD getiteld Chile Con Soul door de Jazz Crusaders, maar ik had van het begin af aan mijn bedenkingen. Is het wel wat ik ervan verwacht? Zijn die Jazz Crusaders vandaag de dag eigenlijk niet een soort funky soul band? Ik had gelijk, al waren de opnamen van deze CD uit 1965 en waren mijn bedenkingen niet helemaal gegrond. The Jazz Crusaders zijn ontstaan in 1961 als een highschool band uit Houston door musici als Wilton Felder ( tenorsax), Hesbert Hooper, bijgenaamd Stix, slagwerk, Joe Sample, piano en Wayne Henderson op trombone. Ze veranderden hun naam in 1971 in The Crusaders, en toen, mijn voorgevoel klopte dus, gingen ze muzikaal een andere richting uit dan de jazz.
The Jazz Crusaders waren voor deze Pacific plaat Chile Con Soul uitgebreid met Hubert Laws op fluit, Clare Fischer op het orgel, Al McKibbon op bas en nog wat conga's en bongo's en andere Latijns-Amerikaanse percussie instrumenten. Hubert Laws groeide op in de jaren vijftig in Houston gelijk met de vaste kern van de Jazz Crusaders band, voordat hij naar New York verhuisde. Dit is dus een soort reunie. In New York had Hubert Laws zich gespecialiseerd in de Latijns-Amerikaanse muziek en dus is die wat vreemde mix van "chili" en "soul" wel te verklaren. Ik heb genoten van nummers als The Breeze and I - Latin Bit en het openingsnummer Agua Dulce (Sweetwater). Zoals in de hoestekst staat te lezen: Fans of hard bop as well as fans of Latin Music can find much to appreciate in this album. (= liefhebbers van zowel hardbop als Latijns-Amerikaanse muziek komen met dit album aan hun trekken)
Wayne Henderson is nog steeds actief en het zijn groep The Jazz Crusaders (inderdaad - het woord Jazz is weer terug in de bandnaam) en ik vond een filmfragment van zijn groep opgenomen tijdens het Houston International Festival van dit jaar, maar daar is weinig jazz in te bespeuren - het is inderdaad een soort funky soul jazz. Ik heb dat fragment dan ook niet gebruikt; wel een stuk uit een interview waarin Wayne Henderson tijdens een interview vertelt over de start van zijn carriere.
