The Day After
( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
The Day After ...... normally people use this small sentence to indicate that they suffer severly by a hangover, due to a wakeful night. Not for me, for me it means The day after the Doctor Jazz Reunion in Wageningen (center of the Netherlands), a day to have a quick glance at the new found treasures, to smell the record covers or leaf in the books. It was great, like always. A lot of old friends, interesting talk to worthy interlocutors in jazz and record collecting( people who understand that K3 is a catalogue number of Sam Lanin's Love Letter In The Sand, a certain Hit of the week recording and not a Belgian pop group ).
What did I found? Oh boy - too much to list it all here. I'll tell you about some nice items. The new recording made by the Jimmie Lunceford Legacy Orchestra, directed by Robert Veen; another great retro-project by the musicians of The Beau Hunks.
The .... Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra red "Charles Bridge" CD ( thanks Fred H.) ( if you don't understand this cryptic description, view the films below this contribution ) and a (for me) unknown Thelonious Monk live CD ( Live in New York vol. 1) and an LP from his saxophone player Charlie Rouse ( Cinneman Flower ). Last but not least an amusing small booklet released in 1995 at Herman Openneer's 60th birthday, titled Washboard Blues. Herman is the Nestor of the Dutch Jazz Archive. Enough to survive a cold winter with a lot of snow - mind that we have to live on these finds until the next Doctor Jazz Reunion the 29th of March 2008.

1927: The day after ...... de volgende dag ..... meestal wordt daarmee bedoeld, dat katterige gevoel, de kater, die je hebt na een doorleefde nacht. Deze keer niet - voor mij, en voor veel reuniegangers, betekent de Day After, de dag na de Doctor Jazz Reunie in Wageningen, de dag om nog eens uitgebreid je aanwinsten te bekijken, aan je nieuwe platen te ruiken of eens door de gekochte boeken te bladeren. Even snel opzetten .. even luisteren. Een dagje Doctor Jazz Reunie betekent ook vooral veel en uitgebreid praten met gelijkgestemden, lotgenoten-in-verzamelen ( dat zijn mensen, die bij K3 niet meteen denken aan een Belgische meidengroep maar aan het matrix- en catalogusnummer van Sam Lanin's Love Letters In The Sand. Wat heb ik zoals gevonden gisteren? Teveel om op te noemen hier, maar een paar interessante items wil ik wel vermelden. De onlangs verschenen nieuwe CD van het Jimmie Lunceford Legacy Orchestra, geleid door Robert Veen; weer zo'n geweldig mooi retro-project door de musici van de Beau Hunks.

( de frevente bloglezers zullen begrijpen wat ik bedoel - kijk anders nog eens naar de filmpjes onderaan deze bijdrage ) , een voor mij onbekende Thelonious Monk live opnamen op CD ( Live in New York vol. 1) en een LP van zijn saxofoonspeler Charlie Rouse ( Cinneman Flower ). En tenslotte nog een leuk boekje, Washboard Blues, uitgegeven ter gelegendheid van de 60ste verjaardag van Herman Openneer, the nestor van de Nederlandse jazz. Genoeg spul weer om vele koude natte ingesneeuwde weekends mee door te komen, want, net als zoveel anderen, we moeten het er weer mee doen tot de volgende reunie op 29 maart 2008.
