Goodson Records

Last night I got a message from Anki T. from Barcelona, Spain who sent me a copy of a beautiful picture record he has in his collection. The record belonged to his grandmother. He labels it as a Flexi disc, and of course it is flexible, but that is not the name of the label. It is a special product of the GOODSON RECORD, a flexible record label. This record was issued at the 1929-1930 Exposicion Internacional de Barcelona, held at the Parque de Montjuic - Plaza de Espana in Barcelona. It has the text: THIS RECORDS (sic) SPECIALLY ARRANGED FOR THE EXPOSITION INTERNATIONAL BARCELONA 1929 and it also has the notation COMPANIA FONOGRAFICA HISPANO-AMERICANO S.A.
The two tune on the record are: Let's Try It Again - 31277 by the MARATHON DANCE ORCHESTRA. The name of the band is of course a pseudonym ( a typically Goodson habit it seems ) and was in fact a Fred Hall studio orchestra. The other side bears the tune Dancing With My Baby by George Beaver, a pseudonym for the then well known crooner Irving Kaufman. He is in fact accompanied by a piano and clarinet player which could be Fred Hall and Eddie Grosso. Goodson Records were flexible records released late 1920s and early 1930s by the Goodson Gramophone Record Co. Ltd. in London. They are made of white opaque celluloid and great to have in your record collection as they don't have a regular (paper) label like other 78rpm records: all information is visable on the complete surface of the record. The hand bending a record picture became its trademark. The first new Goodson was sold, in the regular series, since December 1929 after a lot of problems in the initial phase as its first records were inflammable. There were also problems with royalties. Thanks to the fact that the complete surface of the record could be used they were excellent for advertising. I have the The Boots Chemist Goodson in my collection, one of the most common advertisent record made by Goodson. The Barcelona one is a great one: it had to advertise itself, as the Goodson Record was one of the novelties of the exhibition.
Last week, sometimes things happen, Han E. sent me a copy of a Lido label. Lido was a cheap flexible label, released by Goodson Records, starting at April 1931. 
There were only 20 Lido records made and all but three have tunes also released on the white Goodson records. The last three records released have the words NEW PROCESS RECORDS on the label and also the LIDO logo printed on the black playing surface in mauve lettering. I put an oval around the logo to indicate the place. This record contains the songs LA REVE PASSE - March and on the reverse NARCISSUS both played by CHARLES ANCLIFFE AND HIS ORCHESTRA

De andere kant bevat het nummer Dancing With My Baby - 31275-1 door George Beaver, een schuilnaam voor een toen bekende crooner, Irving Kaufman. Hij wordt op de plaat begeleid door een pianist en een klarinetist, waarschijnlijk Fred Hall en Eddie Grosso. Goodson Records waren buigbare platen uitgebracht eind 1929 tot ongeveer 1932 door de Goodson Gramophone Record Co. Ltd. in London. Ze zijn gemaakt van een wit opaak ( = mat) celluloid en zijn een schitterend object in elke 78-toeren verzameling omdat ze zo anders zijn. Ze hebben als enige 78-toeren plaat geen (papieren) label, maar alle informatie op de plaat staat gedrukt over het hele oppervlak, dwars door de groef heen. De hand-die-een-plaat-buigt werd het logo. De eerste echte Goodsons, die in serie werden uitgegeven kwamen in december 1929 op de markt, nadat er allerlei problemen waren geweest met de brandbaarheid van de testplaten. Daarom staat ook met grote leters op elke GOODSON na december 1929 dat ze NON-INFLAMMABLE zijn. Dankzij het feit dat het hele oppervlak bedrukt kon worden waren ze uitermate geschikt voor reclamedoeleinden. Zelf heb ik een schitterende The Boots Chemist Goodson in mijn verzameling- een mooie plaat, hoewel één van de meest algemene advertentieplaten van GOODSON. De Barclonaplaat is een schitterend voorbeeld: hij werd uitgebracht op de Wereldtentoonstelling om zichzelf te promoten: De Unbreakable Non -Inflammable - Featherweight GOODSON plaat ( Onbreekbare, onbrandbare, vederlichte GOODSON plaat) was één van de nieuwigheden op deze tentoonstelling. Afgelopen week ontving ik van Han E. een afbeelding van een Lido label. Soms lijkt het wel of dingen met opzet gebeuren, want Lido was een goedkope flexibele plaat uitgebracht door GOODSON RECORDS vanaf april 1931. Er zijn maar 20 Lido platen uitgebracht en alle hebben ze, op drie na, dezelfde nummers die ook op GOODSON RECORDS uitgebracht waren. De laatste drie platen hebben op het label de tekst NEW PROCESS RECORDS en ook het Lido logo is in mauve letters op de groeven gedrukt. Ik heb het op de foto hiernaast met een cirkel aangegeven. Op deze plaat twee nummers: LA REVE PASSE - March en op de achterkant NARCISSUS beide gepeeld door het CHARLES ANCLIFFE AND HIS ORCHESTRA

Leuk om nu eindelijk een Goodson te zien die ook gedraaid wordt, volgens mij heeft de pick-up wel een naalddruk van 30 grs. dat hij door de groef blijft ploegen zonder over te springen.
De eerste Goodson's werden waarschijnlijk van celluloid gemaakt, net als de eerste speelfilms. Dat is flexibel, maar uiterst brandbaar.
Zal de Goodson in Amerika gemaakt zijn en in opdracht van het Olympisch commitee van logo zijn voorzien aldaar? Of werden de Goodson's ook in andere laden gefabriceerd, net als de Duriums?
De masters kwamen uit Amerika en de platen werden in de fabriek , gesitueerd Coronation Road, Park Royal in Noord Londen gemaakt. De plaat waarover in het blog sprake is zal een speciaal project geweest zijn als reclame voor de nieuwe plaat, uitgebracht door de Spaanse distributeur de Compania Fonografica Hispano-Americana S.A.
het drukken van de tekst zal ook in London gedaan zijn - ik heb daar geen informatie over.
