Burgemeester
A few days ago I showed you a picture made by Ed van der Elsken made during the famous, or if you like, infamous night concert of the Lionel Hampton Band at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam the 24th of March 1956. Floris told me that after the concert the mayor of Amsterdam, I guess it must have been Arnold J. d' Ailly, forbade all night concerts in Amsterdam for a year. He pointed me to a column made by Simon Carmiggelt, under the pseudonym of Kronkel. Simon Carmiggelt, born in The Hague October 1913 and passed away in 1987, was a famous and beloved Dutch columnist and writer of short novels. Maybe the tune he used for his TV performances in the 1960s In A Sentimental Mood, was my first experience with Jazz. In the column, titled Burgemeester ( Mayor ), Kronkel, as he named himself, asks the mayor to stop the ban of night concerts. He refers to some concerts ahead, like the one with Sidney Bechet, 's werelds witste neger ( = the world's most white negro ), that is scedulded vroeg op de avond ( = early in the evening), and the Modern Jazz Quartet concerts that might be canceled, due to the fact that they are scedulded around midnight. He asks the mayor not to put everything in one box, as you can't compare Lionel Hampton with the Modern Jazz Quartet.
Mijnheer de Burgemeester, dit groepje wordt gevormd door een paar stille hogepriesters, die de jazz serveren als een koel, verfijnd gerecht, dat eerbiedig en zonder schokken, bij kleine hapjes wordt genuttigd ( = Dear sir, this group is a silent unpretentious group of high priests, who serve the jazz as a fresh and refined meal in small portions with high qualified table manners. ). It is strange that it seems as if this ban on night concerts in Amsterdam was not imposed after the March 1956 Hampton concert. In the book One Night Stands, Jazzconcerten in Nederland 1947 - 1967 I read that six night concerts were scedulded in Amsterdam in the year after the ban. Could it be that this ban was made after a previous Hampton concert, like the one held the 28th of October 1954 at the Apollohal in Amsterdam? According to a picture from Kees Scherer, made during that event, that concert was also pretty exciting. Between the 28th of October 1954 and the 29th of October 1955 there wasn't any night concert in Amsterdam. On the 29th of October the Louis Armstrong All Stars gave a concert at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam that started ..... at midnight.

Een paar dagen geleden liet ik jullie een foto zien gemaakt door Ed van der Elsken gemaakt tijdens het beroemde, zo je wilt beruchte, nachtconcert van 24 maart 1956 in het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Als je het nog eens wilt nalezen ga dan naar mijn Keep swinging bijdrage getiteld Lionel Hampton in concert - 1956 . Floris vertelde me dat na het concert de burgemeester van Amsterdam, het moet Arnold J. d 'Ailly geweest zijn, alle nachtconcerten in Amsterdam voor een jaar verbood. Hij wees me op het bestaan van een column gemaakt door Simon Carmiggelt, onder de pseudonym Kronkel. Simon Carmiggelt, geboren in Den Haag oktober 1913 en overleden in 1987 was een beroemd en geliefd schrijver van korte verhalen en columns. Misschien was zijn kennismakingsmelodie In A Sentimental Mood van zijn TV optredens in de jaren zestig waarin hij zijn korte verhalen voorlas wel mijn eerste kennismaking met echte jazz. In één van zijn columns, getiteld Burgemeester, vraagt hij aan de burgemeester om het verbod op nachtconcerten op te heffen. Hij wijst op een aantal concerten die er aan komen, zoals dat van de heer Sidney Bechet, 's werelds witste neger, dat vroeg op de avond gepland is en het Modern Jazz Quartet, waarvan hij bang is dat het geannnuleerd zal worden. Hij vraagt de burgemeester niet alles over één kam te scheren, aangezien Lionel Hampton en het Modern Jazz Quartet nogal wat verschillen. Mijnheer de Burgemeester, dit groepje wordt gevormd door een paar stille hogepriesters, die de jazz serveren als een koel, verfijnd gerecht, dat eerbiedig en zonder schokken, bij kleine hapjes wordt genuttigd: omschrijft Kronkel de groep in zijn column Burgemeester. Het vreemde nu is dat uit niets blijkt dat dit verbod in gegeaan is na het concert van maart 1956. Ik tel in het boek One Night Stands, Jazzconcerten in Nederland 1947 - 1967 zo een zestal nachtconcerten in Amsterdam in het jaar na het gewraakte concert. Zou het kunnen zijn dat het verbod al eerder is geweest? Na het Lionel Hampton concert in de Apollohal van 28 oktober 1954? Als ik de foto mag geloven die Kees Scherer maakte van Hampton ging het er toen ook niet echt zachtzinnig aan toe. Opvallend is, dat tussen 28 oktober 1954 en 29 oktober 1955 geen enkel nachtconcert gepland is in Amsterdam. Op 29 oktoberr 1955 spelen de Louis Armstrong All Stars in het concertgebouw. Aanvang optreden, jawel, middernacht precies.

Floris wees me op een aantal fouten in de tekst. Zo had ik de naam van de burgemeester niet goed en de naam van de fotograaf was verkeerd gespeld. Al die fouten zijn ondertussen aangepast.
