Sonny Rollins in Carnegie Hall

A few weeks ago I told you in my daily Keep Swinging blog about the concert Sonny Rollins gave at Carnegie Hall, New York, the 18th of September 2007, due to celebrate the fact that he played 50 years ago on the same spot for the very first time. His first appearance at Carnegie Hall was on the 29th of November 1957. The photos on this site are from that 1957 concert.

In my contribution about this event I asked people to share their remembrances of one of these concerts with us. I received a great report of Michael Gilbreath I love to share with you.

1957 Carnegie Hall program

Hans, you asked for comments from people who were present for Sonny's 50th Anniversary Carnegie Hall concert.
I was at Sonny's concert, and it was genuinely wonderful. During the trio portion at the beginning, Christian McBride "wowwed" the crowd with a terrific bass solo. And Roy Haynes, even at 82, was truly impressive. Sonny was wonderful too, but it seemed everyone pulled their own weight. Later, during the set with Sonny's touring band, Kimati Dinizulu played a mesmerizing solo that, at one point, got so very soft and quiet, that you could have "heard a pin drop" in Carnegie Hall - quite an amazing performance by Kimati.

1957 program

During the two hours immediately prior to the concert, my granddaughters, Mikayla (14) and Briana (12), both aspiring jazz sax players, and I hosted a reception solely to honor Mr. Sonny Rollins. The more notable persons in attendance were Lou Donaldson, Joe Lovano, Jimmy Heath, Paquito D'Rivera, David Liebman, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Marion Meadows, and Jazz Journalists Association President Howard Mandel. In addition, Benny Golson composed a touching verbal tribute to Sonny, specifically to be presented at this pre-concert reception.

Een paar weken geleden vertelde ik in mijn dagelijkse Keep Swinging blog over het concert dat Sonny Rollins gaf op 18 september 2007 in Carnegie Hall, New York ter gelegenheid van het feit dat hij vijftig jaar geleden op diezelfde plaats voor het eerst optrad. Zijn eerste optreden in Carnegie Hal was op 29 november 1957. De foto's van het programma in deze bijdrage zijn van dat concert uit 1957.

In mijn bijdrage vroeg ik mensen, die bij één van de twee concerten aanwezig geweest waren hun herinneringen met ons te delen. Ik ontving een bijdrage van Michael Filbreath, die met zijn kleindochters het concert van 18 september jl. bezocht en foto's maakte op de receptie, die voorafging aan dit concert. Hij vroeg me zijn verslag en foto's met jullie te delen.

Je riep mensen op, Hans, die aanwezig waren bij het Sonny's 50th Anniversary Carnegie Hall concert hun ervaringen te delen.
Mijn kleindochters en ik waren aanwezig op Sonny's concert, en het was echt geweldig. Tijdens het deel waarin Sonny Rollins optrad met het trio, ging er een siddering door de zaal bij de geweldige solo waarmee Christian McBride het concert opende. Zijn bassolo ontlokte een "wow" in de zaal. En Roy Haynes, toch ook al 82 jaar oud, was ook geweldig, net als Sonny overigens. Alle drie lieten ze horen dat ze, stuk voor stuk, meester zijn op hun instrument. Later, tijdens de set met zijn reguliere groep, speelde drummer Kimati Dinizulu een geweldige solo, zo zacht en relaxed, dat je een speld kon horen vallen in Carnegie Hall; wat een geweldige solo van Kimati.

Tijdens de twee uur vlak voor het optreden, was er een receptie ter ere van Sonny Rollins, waarbij ik, samen met mijn twee kleindochters Mikayla (14) en Briana (12), allebei gedreven jazzsaxofonistes, aanwezig was. Er waren een aantal gerespecteerde jazzmusici aanwezig zoals Lou Donaldson, Joe Lovano, Jimmy Heath, Paquito D'Rivera, David Liebman, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Marion Meadows, en de voorzitter van de Jazz Journalists Association Howard Mandel. Ter gelegenheid van dit concert en deze bijeenkomst schetste Benny Golson in een paar woorden Sonny Rollins en zijn betekenis voor de jazz.

Sonny Rollins - Newk's Time

On the 22nd of September, 1957, 50 years ago, Sonny Rollins recorded the album Newk's Time for Blue Note. It was his last studio album for Blue Note ( The 2CD A Night At The Village Vanguard was a registration of a live concert). He plays with a quartet, which is rather remarkable, as Rollins didn't like such a traditional bebop quartet concept. The band members are Sonny Rollins at the tenor saxophone, Wynton Kelly at the piano, Doug Watkins on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. He made a lot of great albums during that year: Way Out West, Sonny Rollins vol. 2, The Sound of Sonny, and of course this Newk's Time ( Newks is a nickname for Sonny Rollins); records that should be in your collection. I love The Surrey With The Fringe On Top, with Sonny Rollins and Doug Watkins in a great duet. Blues For Philly Joe has a great solo by Sonny Rollins.

I pointed you to the great 2CD titled A Night At The Village Vanguard, that was recorded the 3rd of November 1957 and, for me, is one of the best performances of the young Rollins. Some weeks after the A Night At The Village Vanguard recordings, Rollins had his debut at Carnegie Hall in New York. On the 29th of November 1957 he played there for the very first time, with his trio, featuring himself on the tenor saxophone, Wendell Marshall bass and Kenny Dennis on drums. In fact this was a benefit concert for the Morningside Community Center and during that evening the best of the best in New York jazz appeared on stage: Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Chet Baker, Zoot Sims, Sonny Rollins and Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane, whose concert was released two years ago as Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall.

Last Thursday, the 18th of September 2007, Sonny Rollins celebrated the 50th years birthday of this great event with a concert at Carnegie Hall with his band ( Sonny Rollins, saxophone - Clifton Anderson, trombone - Bobby Broom, guitar - Bob Cranshaw, bass- Kimati Dinizulu, drums ) and a special trio featuring himself on saxophone, Roy Haynes, drums and Christian McBride at the bass. During that concert Rollins planned to play the same songs as in 1957 and this 2007 Carnegie Hall concert will be released as a CD later, with both the 1957 as the 2007 versions. I found three fragments I love to share with you. The first one is a fragment of a performance in the Singer Concertzaal in Laren ( in the center of the Netherlands) in February 1959 ( with Sonny Rolllins tenor saxophone, Henry Grimes bass and Pete LaRocca drums) playing Dream Weaver. The second fragment is a preview on the 2007 Rollins concert at Carnegie Hall like the last one, in which Rollins remembers the 1957 concert.

Op de 22 september 1957, 50 jaar geleden, nam Sonny Rollins de plaat Newk's Time op voor Blue Note. Het was zijn laatste studioplaaat voor Blue Note ( De dubbelcd A Night At The Village Vanguard is een liveopname ). Hij speelt in Newk's Time ( Sonny Rollins bijnaam is Newk ) met een ritme trio, zonder andere blazers en dat was voor de nog jonge Rollins vrij opmerkelijk aangezien hij liever in een trio speelde, zonder piano. Het werd dus een vrij traditioneel bebop kwartet met Sonny Rollins op tenorsax, Wynton Kelly aan de piano, Doug Watkins op bas en Philly Joe Jones op slagwerk. Rollins maakte in 1957 verschillende schitterende albums: Way Out West - Sonny Rollins vol. 2 - The Sound of Sonny en daarbij hoort deze Newk's Time ook bij; een plaat die in je verzameling hoort te zitten. Zelf vind ik het duet tussen Sonny Rollins en Doug Watkins in The Surrey With The Fringe On Top een prachtig moment evenals Blues For Philly Joe waar Sonny Rollins een stevige solo neerzet.

Ik noemde al even de prachtige dubbelcd A Night At The Village Vanguard, die op 3 november 1957 werd opgenomen; het hoogtepunt in Rollins opnamen uit 1957 wat mij betreft. Op 29 november van dat jaar maakte Sonny Rollins zijn debuut in Carnegie Hall, met zijn trio ( hemzelf op tenorsax, Wendell Marshall op bas en Kenny Dennis op slagwerk ). In feite was deze avond een benefietconcert voor de Morningside Community Center en die avond traden op het podium van Carnegie Hall the best of the best uit de New York jazzscene op: Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Chet Baker, Zoot Sims, Sonny Rollins en Thelonious Monk en John Coltrane, wier opnamen een paar jaar geleden werden teruggevonden en uitgebracht op een succesvolle plaat: Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall.

Ik vond drie fragmenten die ik wil laten zien. Het eerste is uit een concert, dat Sonny Rollins hield in februari 1959 in de Singer Concertzaal in Laren met een trio ( Sonny Rolllins tenorsaxofoon, Henry Grimes bas en Pete LaRocca slagwerk).
