A few month ago I was able to enlarge my collection of Betty Boop cartoons, thanks to Jerry. Betty, the humanized dog, a creation by Grim Natwick for Max Fleischer’s studios has always been a favourite of mine.

Betty Boop became a popular cartoon star and had her own series of films, labelled as Betty Boop Cartoons since the second half of 1932 up to the end of the 1930s. In the 1960s a coloured version was reissued. She was fashioned after singer and actress Helen Kane, which Natwick had found on a sheet cover and mixed it with the characteristics of a French poodle. In her first appearances Betty looked like a dogs – since 1932 she became a 1920s flapper girl. I wrote about that in previous blogs.But few people know that Betty also appeared in other cartoon series. At first she didn’t had her own series of films, but was part of the so-called Talkartoons, which were Fleischer first regular sound series. Paramount Talkartoons are something entirely new and entirely different from anything ever seen and heard before. For the first time cartoons will be actual talking pictures (in a late 1920s advertisement) The first one was titled Dizzy Dishes (1930) and her last one in this series: The Betty Boop Limited ( 1932). Thanks to the new sound film, Max Fleischer also started a new series, called Song Car-Tunes, a “bouncing ball” cartoon series, later renamed as Screen Songs. His first bouncing-ball cartoons were released since 1924 and, the actually “Follow The Bouncing Ball” gimmick started with the film song: My Old Kentucky Home (1926). These films were made as silent films and later sound was added.
These 1930s Screen Songs, sing-along shorts, karaoke-avant-la-lettre, in which animated cartoons and live –action footage were combined, became very popular. And sold very well - Paramount even asked Max Fleischer to reconsider its contract ( which Fleischer did!). This series of Screen songs run up to 1938 and was continued between 1947 and 1951 by Famous Studios. Below this blog you’ll find a list of Screen Songs as released by Max Fleischer during the 1930s and from the hundreds of titles only a few dozen survived and were posted on the internet. Last year Original Films reissued a great series of Soundies compilations; Soundies, shorts, the “music clips” from the 1940s. I wonder if ever a compilations of these Screen Songs have been released too on video or DVD. If so, I’m anxious to learn more about it: keepswinging@live.nl

I selected three Screen Songs, all sung by well known artists from the 1930s. To start: with the tune Kitty From Kansas City, in which we recognize a moustached vocalist who happens to be Rudy Vallee, the famous crooner from the Roaring Twenties. He made some great Screen Song like Betty Co-Ed, I wrote about in a previous blog. Betty plays “Kitty”, who visits the “Rudy Valey” (what’s in a name) and in this primitive short Max Fleischer hits a lot of great musical gimmicks, I like so much.

The next fragment is by the Boswell Sisters, who play the tune When It’s Sleepy Time Down South.

And, last but not least, one of the younger Screen Song from 1936, no Betty this time, with the Vincent Lopez Orchestra in a tune titled: I Don't Want To Make History, an indictment of war, a cartoon, which remind me to the early Monty Python films.

Een paar maanden geleden kon ik mijn verzameling Betty Boop cartoons flink uitbreiden dankzij Jerry. Betty, de uit een hondenkop ontwikkelde, getekende “vamp”, geschapen door Grim Natwick voor de Max Fleischer’s studios, is al lang één van mijn favoriete cartoons.

Betty Boop werd met haar filmpjes beroemd door een langlopende serie zogenaamde Betty Boop Cartoons die uitkwamen tussen half 1932 en eind jaren dertig. In de jaren zestig kwamen er ook (ingekleurde) versies op de markt. Ze was een karikatuur van de zangeres en actrice Helen Kane, wier foto Natwick een keer op de voorkant van bladmuziek had zien staan en die hij de uiterlijke kenmerken van een Franse poedel gaf. Vandaar ook dat Betty in de eerste filmpjes er uitziet als een mensachtige hond en pas sinds 1932 als de flapper girl, de vamp uit de jaren twintig. Ik schreef hierover meer in eerdere blo gs.
Maar weinig mensen weten dat Betty ook in andere cartoonseries te zien was. Voordat ze haar eigen serie kreeg, was ze te zien in de Talkartoons, de eerste reguliere geluidsfilms, die Fleischer uitbracht. “Paramount Talkartoons are something entirely new and entirely different from anything ever seen and heard before.( = De Talkartoons van Paramount zijn iets heel anders dan de films die je eerder gezien hebt) zegt een advertentie uit het eind van de jaren twintig, For the first time cartoons will be actual talking pictures ( = voor het eerst wordt een tekenfilm een echte sprekende film.) De eerste die uitgebracht werd was Dizzy Dishes (1930) en de laatste Talkartoon met Betty was The Betty Boop Limited ( 1932). Dankzij de uitvinding van de geluidsfilm ( beeld en geluid werden nog lang apart opgenomen) ontwikkelde Max Fleischer ook een serie, die hij Song Car-Tunes noemde, een zogenaamd “bouncing ball” ( = een springend balletje) tekenfilm, die later hernoemd werd tot Screen Songs. Zijn eerste “meezing” films dateren al van 1924, maar het geintje met het balletje dat langs de woorden springt zien we voor het eerst in: My Old Kentucky Home uit 1926. Het synchroon laten lopen van geluid en beeld was voor die tijd een knap staaltje van techniek. Deze Screen Songs uit de jaren dertig, korte meezingfilmpjes, karaoke-avant-la-lettre, waarin zowel tekenfiguren als echte artiesten in meespeelden, werden razend populair, zo zelfs, dat Paramount aan Max Fleischer vroeg om herziening van het contract. De serie liep tot 1938 en kwam later nog terug tussen 1947 en 1951, maar nu in kleur, gemaakt door Famous Studios.
Onderaan deze blog vind je twee linken naar een uitgebreide lijst met honderden Screen Songs zoals die uitgebracht werden door Max Fleischer tijdens de jaren dertig, maar als je op YouTube gaat zoeken kom je er maar een tiental tegen. Ik vraag me af of ooit deze schitterende “muziekclips” ( de bekendere Soundies uit de jaren veertig zijn immers ook onlangs heruitgegeven in de schitterende serie “Soundies” door Original Films) uitgebracht zijn op video of DVD. Ik zocht drie Screen Songs uit, alle gezongen door bekende artiesten uit de jaren dertig: Om te beginnen het nummer Kitty From Kansas City, waarin een besnorde zanger, die we herkennen als Rudy Vallee, de beroemde crooner uit de jaren twintig en dertig te herkennen valt. Hij maakte ook de Screen Song getiteld Betty Co-Ed, die ik al eens beschreef. In deze film speelt Betty “Kitty”, die een bezoek brengt aan de “Rudy Valey”(what’s in a name) en in het primitieve filmpje zitten weer een heleboel van die schitterende muzikale, typisch Fleischer gimmicks, die deze filmpjes zo bijzonder maken.

Het volgende fragment zijn de Boswell Sisters, die te horen zijn in When It’s Sleepy Time Down South.

En, last but not least, een wat latere Screen Song uit 1936, zonder Betty, met het orkest van Vincent Lopez en het nummer: I Don't Want To Make History, een aanklacht tegen de dreigende oorlogen lijkt het wel, een cartoon, die af en toe lijkt op een vroege Monty Python film.

EEN UITGEBREIDE SCREEN SONGS FILM-O-GRAPHY:
Een uitgebreide lijst met "mee-zing-filmpjes", gemaakt door de Max Fleischer's Studios als SCREEN SONGS vond ik op twee websites. Beide lijsten geven samen een mooi overzicht van welke films er ooit gemaakt zijn - maar of ze ooit nog allemaal boven water zullen komen?

Close Farmony

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.) Today, the first of April, April Fools' Day, is traditionally, the day to make a fool of someone. I won't do that today. I only love to share a musical comedy, titled Close Farmony, (...no, really with a F) a very weird one reeler dated early 1930s. It is the first appearance on film by the Boswell Sisters at a very remarkable location. Well, the film tells his own story - I was really astonished seeing this film. Did you ever saw a musical haystack?

I guess: Cattle and jazz must have something in common. Why not giving more jazz concerts at the farm? Well, now I understand the Talking Cows clip better !!

Vandaag, één april, de dag om bij de neus genomen te worden, de dag bij uitstek om eens iemand voor de gek te houden. Ik doe daar natuurlijk niet aan mee. Toch wil ik vandaag een korte muzikale komedie laten zien, getiteld Close Farmony ( .... nee, met een F ), een heel bijzondere korte film uit de begin jaren dertig. Het is het eerste optreden van de Boswell Sisters op film op een wel heel ongebruikelijke plaats. De film hoeft geen uitleg - die vertelt zijn eigen verhaal. Ooit een muzikale hooibaal gezien?

Zou vee en jazz echt iets met elkaar te maken hebben? Je zou het haast gaan denken. moeten we dan maar geen concerten in de stal organiseren? Ik begrijp nu de achterliggende gedachte van de Talking Cows clip ook beter.
