Jacob Fischer Trio met Svend Asmussen

( To the English section with a great 50 years old session by Billie Holiday and the Seven ages of Jazz.) Jacob Fischer Trio med Svend Asmussen Jacob Fischer with Svend Asmussen
This is a very long CD (= dit is een erg lange plaat), legt Jacob uit op zijn website , You definitely get your money worth with 74:47:00 minutes of music squeezen onto the disc :-) (= Je krijgt waar voor je geld met ruim 74 minuten muziek op deze volgestouwde CD) I just couldn't find out which tunes to omit.
Svend Asmussen actually had to sight-read this new tune in de studio (sorry about that). (= Svend Asmussen moest in de studio meelezen - sorry daarvoor), schrijft Jacob op zijn site: You would never think the guy taking 3 burning chorusses on the blues is actually 91 years old at the time.( = Wie gelooft er dat die violist, die drie vlammende solo's laat horen, tijdens de opnamen als 91 jaar oud is?)
Hans Koert - Svend Asmussen - Ellen Bick Meier (Kopenhagen - juli 2005)

Svend Asmussen

Je kunt hem bestellen op zijn website.

BILLIE HOLIDAY and the SEVEN AGES OF JAZZ
On the 26th of September 1958, 50 years ago, the Seven Ages of Jazz had a live concert at the Oakdale Musical Theater, Wallingford, Conn.(USA) in a festival labeled as The Seven Ages of Jazz Festival. That evening Billie Holiday sung with an all-star band featuring Buck Clayton on trumpet, Mal Waldron at the piano, Milt Hinton on bass and Don Lamond on drums. Two tunes of that concert have been released: I Wished On The Moon and Lover Man. The first tune was introduced by Leonard Feathers who was the speaker of the evening. Mal Waldron starts with a short intro at the piano before Billie starts to sing, backed in a great way by Buck Clayton on trumpet. The drummer gives the tune a contagious rhythm. The second tune is, of course, Billie's famous song Lover Man, which only she could sing in a perfect way with her heart and all her emotions. It became one of the most beautiful versions Billie ever sung 10 month before she passed away !!
I can't share with you a fragment from this concert, but I can show you part of a TV show by Art Ford, broadcasted in July 1958 in which you can see and her Billie Holiday singing What A Little Moonligh Can Do, accompanied by Mal Waldron at the piano. Sorry for the bad quality, but the music is great; really great stuff.

Congratulations for your persistently excellent blog.
um grande abraço,
Tito Martino

Baker's Holiday

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
The 1965 album Baker's Holiday played by Chet Baker and a nine-piece orchestra seems to be rather unknown to most Chet Baker admirers. It was recorded in May or June 1965 by Chet Baker on the flügelhorn (and vocal on some tracks), Alan Ross, Henry Freeman, Seldon Powell, Leon Cohen and Wilford Holcombe reeds, Everett Barkdale guitar, Hank Jones piano, Richard Davis bass and Connie Kay drums.
Although it is not Chet's best recordings, it certainly isn't his worst one. It is unique because Chet plays the flügelhorn all the time during this session, while he normally is playing his trumpet. The record is dedicated to Billie Holiday, the jazz vocalist he adored. Denise Jannah, a Dutch vocalist, has a succesfull theatre tour dedicated to the life of Billie Holiday this winter in The Netherlands and Belgium. The style of Billie Holiday's singing was so unique - do different, Chet says in the liner notes: She had a way of combining singing and talking a tune that was very intimate. One thing I really liked about her was that she never raised her voice. At least, I never heard her shout. The way of singing really reflected a lot of soul. Billie Holiday was Billie Holiday - that's all. She was great. she always did the best tunes, tunes that really lent themselves to her style of singing. She really didn't have a great voice, but what she did with it ....

The album was made with a studio group and that makes it sound a bit smooth, a bit over-arranged ( Thank goodness - no strings! ). It contains 10 tracks, all tunes once sung by Billie Holiday and a lot of it were never recorded by Chet Baker (again). For me, that's the only link with Billie Holiday, as this record is a typically Chet Baker release.
As far as I know Chet Baker never made a tribute album to another artist, so that makes these recordings unique. For me Travelin' Light and That Ole Devil Called Love sound great due to some fine solos.

DOCTOR JAZZ REUNION: The 87th reunion for readers of the Doctor Jazz Magazine is sceduled on the 29th of March 2008 at the WICC-gebouw in Wageningen in the centre of the Netherlands. There will be a record fair and in the afternoo

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

De stijl van Billie Holiday noemt Chet Baker in het bijbehorende boekje, uniek: She had a way of combining singing and talking a tune that was very intimate.

Strange Fruit

Southern trees bear a strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swingin' in the Southern breeze
Strange fruit hangin' from the poplar trees

The song Strange Fruit, written by Lewis Allan, might be the most pure blues song ever written. It was written by a Jewish teacher, Abel Meeropol ( under the pseudonym of Lewis Allan, who had seen the pictures of the hanging parties that were the order of the day in the deep south of the States. The racial discriminiation in the so-called Bible Belt was still a gruesome fact. Billie Holiday received a copy of his poem from Abel Meeropol himself, who also composed the music, but her record company then Vocalion, didn't want to release it. Billie Holiday recorded it for Commodore April 1939 and I have it on a great Commodore LP titled The Greatest Interpretations of Billie Holiday ( GXC 3143).
Billie's interpretation of this song is great - I don't know a better version. I'm glad that I can show you a film fragment where you can see her singing it.

Another interpretation was recorded by Nina Simone during the 1960s. Her version is used in the film fragment below. The last fragment is by Nia, four years old, although I suppose that she's too young to understand where she's singing about.

Both Frank and George could tell me that the film I was refering to in my Bud Powell contribution somedays ago, was Round Midnight. I had made a contribution about that film in a previous blog. Congratulations !!

Time exposure for the 8th of October:
1927:

  • after you've gone = johnny dodds black bottom stompers
  • second hundred years = stan laurel - oliver hardy
1967:

  • riot = miles davis quintet

Southern trees bear a strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swingin' in the Southern breeze
Strange fruit hangin' from the poplar trees

Gefeliciteerd !

Gardenias For Lady Day

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
Last night I played myself the James Carter album Gardenias for a Lady Day. If you are familiar with the jazz history you know that this record must be dedicated to the late Billie Holiday. On the beautfiul designed cover an image of a gardenia, the type of flower Billie Holiday used to wear in her hair. The musicians on this album are James Carter on all kinds of saxophones and clarinets, John Hicks at the piano, Peter Washington on bass and Victor Lewis on drums. Added is a string ensemble, and if you know my preferences you know that I don't like that in jazz.
Charlie Parker with Strings - Chet Baker with Strings - Roy Hargrove with Strings - Shirley Horn with Strings. It seems that every self-respecting musician wants to create a record .... with Strings. It is true, that Charlie Parker with Strings is a very memorable album, I guess he was a trendsetter, but in my opinion this kind of albums are mutilated by a syrupy sound blanket to popularize the music and raise the sales figures. When you make a tribute album, like this one about Billie Holiday, there are two possibilities. You can make an album that copies the music of Billie Holiday note by note; play her music and invitate a singer with a voice marked by an unhealthy style of life ( like the voice of Madeleine Peyroux?) or, second, play her repertoire and use the theme as a steppingstone for your album. That's the way James Carter did it. The tracklist contains eight (Super Audio) or ten ( regular audio) tunes ( this depends on your audio-equipment) sung by Billie Holiday, or songs Billie should have liked. Miche Braden sings on some of the tracks, but her voice doesn't sound like Billie's and James Carter doesn't sound like Billie's accompanists Lester Young or Ben Webster.

I heard James Carter three times live in concert and my appreciation for his music is growing - he is a great saxophone player, for sure. The concert at the Northsea Jazz Festival, in front of the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw and his appearance at the International Jazz Festival in Middelburg, (southwest part of The Netherlands), last month, were some highlights. I like his album Jurassic Classics, recorded in the early 1990s, which expresses the fanciful creative way of Carter's playing, which I don't find on this Gardenias for Lady Day album. One tune, I think it's Billie's best, is Strange Fruit, is played in a great way. It expresses the desperation of the subject and James Carter gives it a overwhelming free jazzblast, Pharoah Sanders would love, but I can imagine that the lovers of a syrupy arranged mainstream jazz ( they exist !!) won't appreciate it.

Gisteravond zat het album Gardenias for a Lady Day van James Carter in mijn CD-speler.
Charlie Parker with Strings - Chet Baker with Strings - Roy Hargrove with Strings - Shirley horn with Strings.

  • james carter/real quiet storm
  • kansas city band/ a robert altman film
