Bud Powell

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
The CD Bud Powell - Strictly Confidential ( Black Lion BLCD 760196) is not Bud's best one. The subtitle is At home in Paris. It contains a bunch of home-made recordings of a lonely and introvert man. Born in New York September 1924 he became one of the fathers of the bebop piano style - one of the musicians that experimented with new rhythms and harmonies at Minton's playhouse early 1940s. He had a weak health and suffered several times from nervous breakdowns. His piano style is very recognizable, like Thelonious Monk.
These private recordings were made in 1963 after he was released from hospital, this time the Bouffemont sanitorium. Francis Paudras, an admirer of Bud's music, visited him often and they became friends. During his visits to Bud's home, he switched his taperecorder on and recorded Bud Powell's playing. Home made private recordings - on a slightly out of tune piano - not to compare with his 1950s recordings for Blue Note. It's not the Bud Powell record I would recommend to start with - he made better ones, but it is a rather valuable and personal document of an introvert and lonely musician, a few years before he passed away ( July 1966 ).

I remember how Toshiko Akiyoshi played his music and told December 2001 while performing in the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen ( southwest part of the Netherlands) about this sad period, in which she visited Bud regularly. The unique Bud Powell - Francis Paudras relation was later used as a theme in a well known jazz film. I'm sure the true jazz fan knows to what film I refer. If you have a suggestion let me know: keepswinging@live.nl. I'll post the film title on this blog within a few days.
I love to share a film fragment with you (thanks Enrique !), made a year before these Paris' home recordings. You can hear Bud Powell play in Copenhagen with Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass and John Elniff on drums, playing Anthropologie

Laat het me weten: keepswinging@live.nl.

This relationship obviously refer to the film "Round Midnight" (1988) by French filmmaker & producer Bertrand Tavernier. The relationship is here transposed in the scenario to different and new characters played magnificently by François Cluzet and... Dexter Gordon!

This film is one of the best jazz film ever. Also, the soundtrack of this film is an achievement in itself.

Cheers.
