Welkom op de nieuwe Keep (it) Swinging nieuwsbrief site, met weer interessante bijdragen en recensies. Je vindt er verslagen van een paar mooie concerten van The Original Crooks ( een band die de muziek van de string bands uit de jaren twintig en dertig doet herleven) tot de veelbelovende Zwitsere trombonist Nils Wogram .....  De afgelopen weken is het aantal mensen dat de blog via Facebook volgt flink gestegen en ook het aantal lezer van deze nieuwsbrief stijgt nog steeds. Als je nog mensen kent, die "onwetend zijn", stuur ze dan de link door http://keepitswinging.blogspot.nl  ... In the last recording session for Odeon Oscar Alemán y su Orquesta de Jazz recorded four tunes on 17. June 1957, among these was the choro 'Dedos duros' composed by Alemán himself and excellently performed as a two-part guitarsolo with accompaniment by the string section of the orchestra. 'Dedos duros' meaning hard fingered in English is a challenging piece for guitar, but is performed convincingly by Alemán - probably with tounge-in-cheek and a sore left hand afterwards. Eén  van de grootste Franse bandleiders was ongetwijfeld Ray Ventura, die in de jaren dertig met zijn Collegiens hit na hit scoorde en met zijn orkest een grote show makte rond elk optreden. In twee delen belicht Georg Lankester zijn leven. In De Fransman die Jazz met Show combineerde worden de jaren dertig in de schijnwerper gezet. ( Georg Lankester)

 Een oude 78-toerenplaat uit die eerste jaren na de Tweede Wereldoorlog: de naam van het label verwijst naar de periode van vrijheid die is aangebroken: Victory Een plaatje met een verhaal .... :  Gus Deloof, trompettist, wiens "virtuositeit en zeldzame sonioriteit, vooral op gestopte trompet, leidde tot een gekende uitdrukking in Belgische jazzmiddens "Spelen als Gus Deloof". Een tijdsbeeld uit het naoorlogse Brussel ...... Keep (it) Swinging luisterde de plaat af en ontfutselde haar geheimen. ..... (Hans Koert)

CONCERTS / CONCERTEN / FESTIVALS

Het tijdschrift voor Classic Jazz & More, Doctor Jazz Magazine, bestaat 50 jaar en dat is niet ongemerkt voorbij gegaan. Twee jubileum Doctor Jazz dagen, twee bijzondere dubbelcd uitgaven ( Dinnertime for Hungry Collectors en Jazz at the Kurhaus) en een keur aan orkesten, die optraden. Oud hoofd-redacteur en jaren het gezicht van het Doctor Jazz Magazine, Herman Openneer werd geëerd. The Original Crooks, decennia geleden al eens te gast op één van de Doctor Jazz Reunies, beet op zaterdag 19 oktoberg 2013 in Wageningen het spits af tijdens de optredens op de tweede jubileumdag. (Hans Koert)

 Nils Wogram, gelouwerd Zwitsers trombonist, kwam, zag en overwon op zondagmiddag 20 oktober 2013 in Porgy en Bess (Terneuzen) met zijn Nostalgia Trio ( met ex-Terneuzenaar Arno Krijger en de Duitse slagwerker Dejan Terzic het "verwende" Porgy en Bess publiek. Weer zo'n geweldig Porgy en Bess jazzmiddag, die je niet had mogen missen: Jazz op hoog Europees niveau.

Mike del Ferro verzamelt landen zoals anderen postzegels verzamelen. Hij heeft al in meer dan 100 verscbhillende landen achter de piano gezeten en al die vreemde culturen fascineren en inspireren hem. In zijn serie Songs Inspired By Wandering The Globe is nu, na een introductie-album, het eerste deel uitgebracht door Challenge, geïnspireerd door de vele muziekstijlen, die Brazilië rijk is. Impressions of Brazil heet het album. Gast is Ceumar, de uit Sao Paulo afkomstige vocaliste, die met haar fraaie stem en gitaarspel, het Braziliaanse timbre, het Mike del Fero Trio ( Mike del Ferro - Jeroen Vierdag - Bruno Castellucci) aanvult.(Hans Koert) 

Ken Peplowski is a standard in clarinet playing.  He is compared with the great Benny Goodman, with whom he played some gigs during the last years of his career. Recently Ken Peplowski released an album with his quartet, featuring a great rhythm section: Ted Rosenthal at the piano, Martin Wind on bass and Matt Wilson drums - The album is entitled Maybe September.(Hans Koert)

Jazz at the Kurhaus .....  Een serie avondvullende concerten, in de jaren vijftig georganiseerd door Paul Acket, als een Hollandse kloon van de populaire Jazz at the Philharmonic concerten van Norman Granz ...... een vingeroefening voor Acket's latere Northsea Jazz Festivals .....Het jubilerende Doctor Jazz Magazine, dat vijftig jaar geleden voor het eerst gepubliceerd werd en momenteel één van de weinige jazzbladen die kan terugkijken op vijftig jaar, brengt Jazz At The Kurhaus weer tot leven in een live registratie met muziek van de JATK-All Stars, de Dixieland Pipers, de Hot Strings, Pia Beck en de Down Town Jazz Band, aangevuld met verschillende nationale - en internationale artiesten ......  Een uniek tijdsbeeld herleeft. Nowadays the popularity of salsa music as a dance seems to be rising. Born in New York in the  1970s the SF Bay Area scene seems to be overlooked and neglected for years. Next year a documentary about the US West Coast salsa scene will be released entitled The Last Mambo.
 A selection of nowadays salsa bands from the West Coast of the US has now been released on a 2cd album entitled Salsa de la Bahia, subtitled A Collection of SF Bay Salsa and Latin Jazz, featuring great names like Benny Celarde y su Super Combo, Anthony Blea y sy Charanga, John santos and the Machete Ensemble, Hesse "Chuy" Varela,  Jesus Diaz y su QBA, Edgardo y sy Candela, Orestes Vilató, The Roberto Borrell-Tregor Otten's  La Moderna Tradicón, Louie Romero y su Grupo Mazacote, Benny Velarde and some new recordings by a great all star band Estrellas de la Bahia. In American music tradition the mandolin generally is considered a 'folk' instrument designated for musicians excelling in country music and especially a branch of this commercially successfull genre usually labeled as 'bluegrass'. Dan Stiernberg, however, prooverd that the instrument is also suitable for he swing idiom and released with his trio a few years ago a great album with jazz standards, thatshould be recommended, entitled Swing 220.

Ruud Jacobs, al meer dan 55 jaar actief als bassist en producer, werd in 1958 uitverkoren om als enige jonge Nederlandse jazzmuzikant deel te nemen aan de International Youth Band, die in juli 1958 mocht optreden op het Newportfestival tussen alle grote jazziconen van die tijd ............ De komende maanden reconstrueert Keep (it) Swinging dit "avontuur", dat Ruud later in Rhythme zou omschrijven als ... 't was fantastisch. (Hans Koert)

Ruud Jacobs, bass player andproducer for more then 55 years, was the Dutch represenative to be part of the International Youth Band that performe at the 1958 Newport Festival. Lillian Boutté: Gevierd New Orleans jazzzangeres en actievoerder die strijd voor de wederopbouw van het door de orkaan Katrina verwoeste stad New Orleans. Film by the Sea bracht in haar serie Jazz on Film een indrukwekkende documentaire getiteld The Sound After the Storm, waarbij de titel refereert aan de haast voelbare stilte na de ramp die de stad trof.  Lillian Boutté trad op in haar eigen club ...  de club van Frank Koulen, de Neger .... Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen. He's in every piece of the place .... He's all over the place .... (Hans Koert)

Filmpjes kijken doet je eigenlijk nooit meer en al zeker geen jazzfilmpjes ...... Wie zo gelukkig is Mezzo of DJazz.tv op zijn kabel te hebben, ziet ze nog wel eens voorbij komen - ietwat wazige, verkeerd uitgelijnde zwart-wit filmpjes van ietwat statische jazzorkesten, gefilmd vanuit één standpunt of zangeressen met hoog opgestoken haar en geen-gezicht brillen uit de jaren vijftig ...... Tijdens het Film by the Sea festival werden in Porgy en Bess dit soort historische films gedraaid uit de collectie van Steve Wante, die de meeste jazzcoryfeeën persoonlijk gekend heeft en een selectie met zijn 16 mm. projector tot leven bracht en daar smakelijk van mocht verhalen ...........: (Hans Koert)

 Jazz by the Sea, het gezellige Zeeuwse Oude Stijl Jazz Festival, dat in september gehouden wordt op verschillende locaties op Walcheren (Zeeland) heeft weer eens bewezen veel jazzfans aan te trekken uit Nederland, België en Duitsland. Deze keer pakten ze uit met een internationaal kwartet, the International Aces of Hot Jazz  o.l.v. de Nederlandse Sidney Bechet, Robert Veen: een All-Starkwartet met musici die hun sporen in de swingmuziek verdiend hebben. Most of Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Chet Baker and Bill Evans early recordings have been reissued in cheap budget boxes, a grab bag for collectors, but stabbed the serious record companies to the heart ...... Limetree and Resonance recently released two excellent live albums by the Bill Evans Trio, recorded in the Top of the Gate in New York City (1968) and the Stadsschouwburg in Groningen ( The Netherlands) - both in an excellent sound quality. In 1959 Oscar Alemán had schedulded a tour along Spain, Switzerland and Portugal, but after a few weeks and some disappointing concerts, the tour was cancelled. (Hans Koert)

Tussen 1945 en 1955 was Oscar Alemán de gevierde entertainer, gitarist en zanger, die in Argentinië en in de landen daar omheen, moeiteloos de grootste zalen vol kreeg  Maar de veranderde belangstelling van de jeugd, Rock en Roll overspoelde ook Zuid-Amerika, eiste zijn tol - de stoelen bleven leeg en zijn platen verkochten niet meer - bovendien kreeg Oscar gezondheidsproblemen door exensief drankgebruik ..... De uitnodiging voor een aantal optredens in Spanje, Zwitserland en Portugal, eind jaren vijftig, kwam voor Oscar dan ook als geroepen.... in Europa zouden ze zijn muziek nog wel kunnen waarderen - net als in de jaren dertig ..... Mike Del Ferro leads a busy life with concerts and work shops .. not only in his native country Holland, but all around the world; even in exotic and remote places, where they don't have a word for his kind of music ..... Like a 16th Century explorer, he visited and performed in almost 100 different countries where he loves to play and be inspired by local musicians. In a series of a dozen albums, to be released by Challenge Records, he loves to share these experiences ... This series is entitled The Journey and recently its first album was released - a preview ( or shall I say pre-ear)for the rest of the series: The Journey.  Keep an eye on this Dutch pianist .... Woodwind instruments have been standard instruments in choro since the beginning. The flute was the lead melody instrument of the terno, the original (trio) choro ensemble consisting of flute, cavaquinho and guitar, while larger ensembles like the bands led by Anacleto de Medeiros also excelling in early choro were based on brass instruments. Pixinguinha started as a flutist, but already after his visit to Paris in 1922 with his Oito Batutas, he fell in love with the tenor saxophone, but was prevented from playing the instrument in public until much later, mainly because of national critics claiming the saxophone to spoil Brazilian music by Americanized jazzinfluence. A recently released cd by sax-player Flavio Sandoval, 'Vibrações Brasileiras' (Tratore, 2012), continues the focus on the saxophone as a lead voice in a repertoire of choro compositions. (Jørgen Larsen)

A few weeks ago I was pointed to the latest album of the Brazilian vocalist Ceumar, who lives and works in Amsterdam. Her fifth record, entitled Ceumar & trio - Live in Amsterdam was released early this year. It was recorded at the Theatre of the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam February 2009 and Ceumar was accompanied by a Dutch jazz trio featuring Mike Del Ferro at the piano, Frans Van Der Hoeven double bass and Olaf Keus drums.

Ceumar Coelho, Ceu means heaven and Mar sea, was born early 1970s in the Brazilian city Itanhandu in the province of Minas Gerais.
She was raised in a musical family - Her father was a musician too and her mother loved to sing. She studied the violin, but her passion was singing, like her mother, who sung the music she heard on the radio. This popular music was called MPB, the Musica Popular Brasileira. A musical style born late 1960s - early 1970s, which contains a heterogeneous group of musicians, a generation of artists like Gilberto Gil, vocalist Elis Regina and Maria Bethania to list a few. This music style became popular at a political unpleasant period for a lot of Brazilians, who lived in a climate of growing fear and repression, and in the mid 1960s musical festivals became a vital cultural outlet for the Brazilians. During these festivals a jury of musicians, journalists, nominated artists to perform and the best were rewarded with trophies and prizes. Singer, guitarist and composer Caetano Veloso, singer-guitarist Milton Nascimento and artists like the 1966 winner Chico Buarque de Hollanda (1966), a singer-songwriter from Rio, were some artists Ceumar must have influenced her ...... This MPB can best described as a mix of Jazz and soul and the traditional samba-music.

She started to sing at bars in the province of Minas Garais, US and Brazilian pop songs, before she left, in 1995, for Sao Paulo. There she met Zeca Baleiro, which whom she recorded in 2000 her debut album entitled Dindinha and she became known at festivals all over South America. Thanks to this first album she was one of the artist to play at the Belgian Sfinks Festival 26th of July 2003. Between 2000 and 2009 she released three more albums: Sempre Viva, Achou! and Meu Nome, a live solo recording of a concert at the FECAP-theatre ( Sao Paulo ). In 2005 Mike Del Ferro and his Trio played at a festival in Brazil and there they met, which resulted in an European tour. In 2009 she moved to Amsterdam and started to perform again with the Mike Del Ferro Trio. Her latest album, entitled Live in Amsterdam was released earlier this year.

Ceumar is accompanied by three skilled jazz musicians. Mike Del Ferro studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory. He toured all around the world with an impressive list of jazz musicians. In 2000 he recorded a remarkable record I have in my collection, entitled Mike Del Ferro plays Belcanto, in which he plays classical Belcanto songs by classical composers like Verdi, Puccini and Nebucco, to list some, in the jazz idiom. Frans Van Der Hoeven is to be heard on numerous albums and played with Jesse Van Ruller, Bert Joris, Tineke Postma, Fay Claasen and Jeroen Van Vliet. I heard Frans once at a concert with the Jesse Van Ruller trio (+ Bert Joris) at a concert in Porgy en Bess Terneuzen (The Netherlands) (February 2005). Olaf Keus is a percussionists, who often played with South American musicians, like Ramon Valle, singer Deborah J. Carter and the Surinam flute player Ronald Snijder.

The album Ceumar & trio - Live in Amsterdam contains nine tracks - almost half are own compositions. One of those own compositions is Jabuticaba Madura about the Brazilian fruit named Jabuticaba. I found a fragment of it I love to share with you:

Two tracks, Dindinha and Pecadinhos, were composed by Zeca Baleiro, who was present on her first album Dindinha, and now released in a live version. The tune Girias do Norte, which I really appreciate, is originally from the north of Brazil. This rhythm is labelled as coco and was made popular by José Gomes Filho, aka Jackson do Pandeiro. I love to finish with this tune as recorded at the Dutch TV-program VPRO Vrije Geluiden.

A few years ago the Brazilian singer / songwriter Ceumar moved from Sao Paulo to Amsterdam where she performed with the Dutch jazz trio of Mike Del Ferro - Frans Van Der Hoeven and Olaf Keus. One of these concerts was recorded at the Tropentheater in Amsterdam and is now available as her fifth album, her debut in Holland. Keep Swinging listened to this album and was impressed. Een paar weken geleden werd ik gewezen op de nieuwste plaat van de Braziliaanse gitarist en zangeres Ceumar, die woont en werkt in Amsterdam. Haar vijfde plaat, getiteld Ceumar & trio - Live in Amsterdam werd eerder dit jaar uitgebracht. Het werd opgenomen in februari 2009 in het theater van het Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam en daar werd ze begeleid door een jazztrio bestaande uit Mike Del Ferro aan de piano, Frans van der Hoeven bas en Olaf Keus slagwerk.

Ceumar Coelho, Ceu betekent "hemel"en Mar "zee", werd geboren begin jaren zeventig in de Braziliaanse stad Itanhandu in de provincie Minas Gerais.


Ze groeide op in een muzikaal gezin - vader was muzikant en haar moeder zong graag. Ze studeerde viool, maar haar passie lag bij zingen, net als haar moeder, die meezong met de populaire liedjes van de radio. De populaire muziek, die toen vooral op de radio klonk wordt ook wel MPB genoemd, dat staat voor Musica Popular Brasileira. Een muziekstijl die ontstond eind jaren zestig - begin jaren zeventig en een heterogene groep musici bevatte, een generatie artiesten, zoals Gilberto Gil, zangeres Elis Regina en Maria Bethania om er een paar te noemen. Deze muziek werd populair in een donkere periode in de Braziliaanse politiek; een onplezierige periode met een politiek klimaat van toenemende angst en onderdrukking.
Midden jaren zestig kreeg die muziekstijl een boost dankzij populaire tv-festivals - voor de onderdrukte bevolking een soort muzikale uitlaatklep. Tijdens deze tv-festivals, die rechtstreeks uitgezonden werden, wees een jury van musici, critici en journalisten winnaars aan die in de prijzen vielen. Zanger, gitarist en componist Caetano Veloso, zanger-gitarist Milton Nascimento en artiesten zoals Chico Buarque de Hollanda, een singer-songwriter uit Rio, die in 1966 bij de winnaars hoorde, waren artiesten die grote indruk maakten op Ceumar en haar beïnvloed moeten hebben ....... Deze MPB kan het best omschreven worden als een mix van Jazz en soul en de traditionele sambamuziek.

Ze begon naam te maken door Amerikaanse- en Braziliaanse hits te zingen in cafés in de regio Minas Garais, voordat ze in 1995 naar de wereldstad Sao Paulo verhuisde.
Hier ontmoette ze Zeca Baleiro, met wie ze in 2000 haar debuutalbum Dindinha maakte, wat haar op de podia van allerlei muziekfestival in Zuid-Amerika bracht. Dankzij dit eerste album werd ze uitgenodigd om in juli 2003 op te treden op het Belgische Sfinks Festival. Tussen 2000 en 2009 bracht ze nog drie platen uit: Sempre Viva, Achou! en Meu Nome, de laatstgenoemde een registratie van een live-optreden in het FECAP-theater van Sao Paulo. In 2005 ontmoette ze op één van die Zuid Amerikaanse festival Mike del Ferro en zijn trio en uit deze ontmoeting vloeide een Europese tournee voort. In 2009 verhuisde ze naar Amsterdam en begon hier weer op te treden met Mike Del Ferro - haar laatste album Live in Amsterdam, eerder dit jaar uitgebracht, is hiervan een resultaat.

Ceumar wordt begeleid door drie ervaren jazzmuzikanten. Mike Del Ferro studeerde aan het conservatorium van Amsterdam. Hij reisde de hele wereld door met een indrukwekkende lijst musici en speelt graag en vaak met musici uit andere culturen. In 2000 maakte hij een plaat, die ik in mijn verzameling tegenkwam, getiteld Mike Del Ferro plays Belcanto, waarin hij klassieke Belcanto liederen gecomponeerd door bijvoorbeeld Verdi, Puccini en Nebucco, om er een paar te noemen, omvormt tot jazznummers. Frans van der Hoeven speelt op honderden (!) platen mee als bassist met musici als Jesse van Ruller, Bert Joris, Tineke Postma, Fay Claasen en Jeroen van Vliet. Ik hoorde hem in februari 2005 op bas met het Jesse van Ruller trio (+ Bert Joris) tijdens een concert in Porgy en Bess Terneuzen. De plaat Ceumar & trio - Live in Amsterdam bevat negen nummers, waarvan bijna de helft eigen composities. Eén van die eigen nummers is Jabuticaba Madura, dat gaat over een Braziliaanse vrucht genaamd Jabuticaba. Ik vond een fragment van dit nummer dat ik graag wil laten horen.

Twee nummers, Dindinha en Pecadinhos, zijn van de hand van Zeca Baleiro, die ook op haar gelijknamige eerste plaat meespeelde en produceerde: Dindinha en nu voor het eerst in een live-versie te horen is. Girias do Norte, een geweldig nummer, komt oorspronkelijk uit het noorden van Brazilië. Het ritme dat je hoort heet coco en werd populair gemaakt door José Gomes Filho, beter bekend als Jackson do Pandeiro. Ik wil afsluiten met dit nummer gespeeld tijdens het VPRO programma Vrije Geluiden.

Een paar jaar geleden verhuisde de Braziliaanse zangeres Ceumar van Sao Paulo naar Amsterdam en trad ze live op met een trio bestaande uit Nederlandse jazzmusici: Mike Del Ferro - Frans van der Hoeven - Olaf Keus. Dit optreden in het Tropentheater in Amsterdam is uitgebracht en al weer het vijfde album van deze Braziliaanse zangeres, die in haar moederland als zangeres en componist sinds 2000 een carriere heeft opgebouwd. Chris Beckers' latest album, Seven Frames of Mind, has been released more then a year ago. For this album Chris invited several guest musicians, like Eric Vloeimans, Jasper van't Hof, Tony Lakatos, Hermine Deurloo, Mike del Ferro, Deff Cramer and Marcel Serierse.

The rhythm section is one of the best of the American Westcoast music scene, CrisCrazz says and contains the US bass player Jimmy Haslip, who was one of the founders of the group The Yellowjackets and the drummer, Simon Philips, former percussionist of Toto. Both men are well known musicians in the US pop scene.

Seven Frames of Mind is a real fusion album. Fusion became popular in the 1970s thanks to trail-blazing albums like Miles Davis' In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew and by musicians like Chick Corea with his Return For Ever band; Herbie Hancock, who made some great fusion albums like Headhunters and Thrust; Other bands who became known for its fusion-sounds were Weather Report and guitarist John McLaughlin with his Mahavishnu Orchestra. This kind of music is still very popular and I’m sure a lot of young jazz fans will love this record, because of its danceable rhythms. The rhythm section is a very solid one and was recorded separately in the US at the Simon Phillips' Phantom Studio in Los Angeles. The rest of the music was recorded in the Beau Garage Studio in Amsterdam. Finaly the album was mixed by Chris Beckers and entitled Seven Frames of Mind. Chris Beckers was born in Laren, a village in the centre of The Netherlands, but moved in the 1960s with his family to the Ruhrgebiet in Germany. As a teenager he became fascinated by the so-called progressive music of legends like Jimi Hendrix. After he had left school, he married and moved with his family to the northern part of Germany where he became a member of the Backwater Blues band. During the 1980s he started to play jazz and performed in The States with musicians like Ernie Watts, Billy Cobham, Peter Erskine and Jimmy Haslip. In 1980 his first album, Blue Motions, was released ad since that ones he made a dozen albums under his own name up to this latest: Seven Frames Of Mind (2009). The album Seven Frames of Mind contains eight tracks, all Chris Beckers compositions or arrangements. In fact all tunes were originally born as improvisations, themes and rhythms created by Chris on his guitar and arranged with his guests. As written before Chris invited leading jazz musicians, like Hermine Deurloo, who plays the chromatic harmonica, member of the Willem Breuker Kollektief, ( since a few months without Breuker), in a bluesy theme entitled Tosca. Jasper Van't Hof, active in the Dutch jazz scene since the 1970s, plays the keys in the title tune Seven Frames of Mind and in Wallsend ( aka Paul’s Blues), a ballad if you like, he plays a great piano solo. For me Golfjes, subtitled Dance of the River, is the one I like most. Eric Vloeimans, together with Rik Mol, one of the leading Dutch trumpet players, gives this tune a funky sound.

The tunes on the latest album by Chris Beckers were, in fact, all improvisations he made on his guitar and later worked out together with leading (Dutch) jazz musicians like Eric Vloeimans, Jasper van't Hof, Marcel Serierse and Mike del Ferro. The American rhythm section with Jimmy Haslip and Simon Phillips formed a solid base; enough elements for a many-sided album, attractive for a large audience. Keep Swinging played the album.
