Twee jaar geleden, oktober 2008, trad het Jeff Hamilton trio op in Porgy en Bess (Terneuzen) met Jeff Hamilton op slagwerk, Tamir Hendelman aan de piano en Christoph Luty op bas. Ik herinner het als een geweldig concert met drie gedreven en ervaren musici. Tamir Hendelman herinner ik vanwege zijn spel in m.n. het nummer Lullaby of the Leaves, dat ze speelden. Zijn eerste album Playground was toen net in Japan verschenen en Jeff Hamilton speelde daarop eveneens het slagwerk. Bassist op Tamir's eerste CD was John Clayton, ook geen onbekende; samen met Jeff speelde hij in het beroemde Monty Alexander Trio dat bekend werd op het Montreux Jazzfestival van 1976. Tamir Hendelman heeft nu een nieuwe plaat uitgebracht, getiteld Destinations en reist de komende maand door Europa en speelt tijdens concerten en clinics in Engeland, Frankrijk, Duitsland en Nederland.

Tamir Hendelman is in 1971 geboren in Tel Aviv in Israël en kreeg zijn eerste pianolessen op zesjarige leeftijd. Zijn familie verhuisde in 1984 naar de westkust van de VS en twee jaar later won hij een belangrijke prijs met zijn pianospel, dat hem naar Japan bracht. Hij ging muziek studeren aan het Eastman Conservatorium en studeerde af op compositieleer. Tien jaar geleden ging hij spelen bij het Jeff Hamilton Trio en later ook bij de Clayton-Hamilton Big Band. Hij werd een gezocht begeleider voor zangeressen als Roberta Gambarini ( op het album Easy To Love), Diana Krall, Barbara Streisand en Natalie Cole. Zijn eerste album onder eigen naam, Playground, verscheen in 2008 in Japan - nu is zijn tweede verschenen: Tamir Hendelman: Destinations ( Resonanve Records RCD-1017)

Het Tamir Hendelman Trio bestaat uit Tamir Hendelman aan de piano, Marco Panascia op bas en Lewis Nash op slagwerk. De in Italië geboren Marco Panascia woont nu in New York en speelde met vele grote namen uit de jazz zoals Kenny Barron, Eric Reed en pianist Dado Moroni. Lewis Nash begon zijn carrière in 1983 als begeleider van Betty Carter en de lijst met namen van musici waarmee hij speelde laat zich lezen als een jazzencyclopedie: Art Farmer, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, McCoy Tyner en Tommy Flanagan, om er maar een paar te noemen. De triovorm is één van de meest voorkomende vormen in de jazz, meestal bestaande uit piano, bas en slagwerk. En er is niets mis met een goed jazztrio dat een bekend nummer speelt, beginnend met het thema uitgewerkt door de pianist en begeleid door de andere twee; dan een rustig deel voor het refrein met de bas en het slagwerk en dan weer een opbouw met de pianist en de drummer om weer terug te komen bij het thema voor een groots slot. (vrije vertaling van de hoestekst door Robert L. Doerschuk). Maar het trio kan ook bestaan uit een drietal even sterke muzikanten. Een trio met drie ervaren improvisators. De ritmesectie die Tamir Hendelman om zich heen verzamelde behoort zonder twijfel tot die laatste vorm: twaalf nummers lang, alle arrangementen van Tamir Hendelman, laten horen dat deze mannen veel in hun mars hebben.
Het nummer Israeli Waltz en het nummer Babushka zijn de enige twee eigen composities van Hendelman op deze plaat. De laatstgenoemde compositie, schreef hij voor zijn grootmoeders, waaraan hij moest denken toen hij zo'n setje Russische poppetjes vond tijdens een trip door Alaska. Het eerstgenoemde nummer is een ode aan zijn geboorteland.

De plaat opent met een schitterende versie van Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams, een nummer dat een hit werd begin jaren dertig, in maart 1931 door Bing Crosby op de plaat gezet. Tamir zet meteen de toon als hij dit nummer opent ............voordat het nummer swingend opgepakt wordt door de ritmesectie.

In Le Tombeau de Couperin laat Tamir horen, dat hij zowel jazz and klassiek kan waarderen, met een ode aan de muziek van Maurice Ravel. De Charlie Parker compositie Anthropology hoort, samen met Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams en BQE tot mijn favorieten van dit album. Op deze nummers is Tamir Hendelman op zijn best - zijn spel doet me sterk denken aan dat van Monty Alexander, zoals hij vier jaar geleden in Porgy en Bess optrad. De letters BQE staan, overigens, voor Brooklyn Queens Expressway en is, zo schrijft Tamir op de plaat .... our jumping off point - into the energy of NYC.

Het nummer BQE, kreeg een voor-nominatie voor een Grammy in de categorie Best Improvised solo. Tamir Hendelman kreeg nog twee andere voor-nominaties, namelijk voor the Best Instrumental Album en het nummer Israeli Waltz als the Best Instrumental Composition.

Deze maand treedt Tamir Hendelman op tijdens workshops en concerten in West Europa. Zie hiervoor de actuele lijst met optredens. Het is voor Europa zijn debuut als bandleider

Vandaag en morgen ( 6 en 7 december 2010) treedt hij aan in clinics aan de conservatoria van Arnhem, Utrecht en Tilburg. Helaas zijn deze concerten niet openbaar. Op 19 december 2010 bestaat er wel een mogelijkheid om Tamir live te beluisteren tijdens een optreden georganiseerd door Henk Hupkes Piano's Vleugels Gitaren in Zeist. Op 10 december 2010 is Tamir Hendelman te gast in Mijke Loeven's programma Live in Panama op Radio 6

Two years ago, October 2008, the Jeff Hamilton Trio, featuring Jeff Hamilton on drums, Tamir Hendelman at the piano and Christoph Luty performed at the Porgy en Bess Jazz club in Terneuzen ( in the south west part of The Netherlands). I remember a great concert with three skilled musicians. Tamir Hendelman was remembered because of his strong playing and great arrangement like for Lullaby of the Leaves. His first album, entitled Playground, released in 2008 in Japan, features his arrangements of standards as well as his originals.

On this album Jeff Hamilton played the drums with John Clayton on bass. John Clayton is, of course remembered as the bass player in the famous Monty Alexander Trio recordings of Montreux 1976. Tamir Hendelman has now released his second album, entitled Destinations. Tamir Hendelman can be heard this months at several concerts and clinics in England, France, Germany and The Netherlands.

Tamir Hendelman was born in Tel Aviv in Israel in 1971 and got his first piano lessons at the age of 6. His family moved to the US West coast when he was 12 years old and when he was 14 years old he won his first award, which even brought him to Japan. He studied at the Eastman School of Music. He became a member of the Jeff Hamilton Trio ten years ago and the Clayton-Hamilton Big Band. He became also a sought after accompanists for jazz vocalists like Roberta Gambarini ( on the album Easy To Love), Diana Krall, Barbara Streisand and Natalie Cole. His first album with his own trio was released in Japan in 2008 entitled Playground; now his second one has been released: Destinations.
The Tamir Hendelman Trio features Tamir Hendelman at the piano, Marco Panascia double bass and Lewis Nash drums. The Italian born Marco Panascia played with great names like Kenny Barron, Eric Reed and Dado Moroni. Lewis Nash started his career with Betty Carter in 1985 and accompanied a lot of greats in jazz, like Art Farmer, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, McCoy Tyner and Tommy Flanagan, to list some!

The trio seems to be one of the most common group forms to play in jazz, normally featuring piano, bass and drums. And there is nothing wrong with hearing a great trio blow through a familiar standard, stating the head at the top, letting the pianist stretch out with the other two accompanying, getting quiet for a chorus from the bass and building up again for the pianist and drummer to trade fours, and restating the tune on the way to a big finish. (liner notes by Robert L. Doerschuk). But what happens if equally skilled threesome play together? A trio with three inventive improvisers? Well, this Tamir Hendelman Trio belongs to the latter; the dozen tunes, all arranged by Tamir learn that these three men are great improvisers and can listen to each other.

The tune Israeli Waltz and Babushka are both own compositons by Tamir; the latter he wrote for his two grandmothers, after he had found these Russian nest dolls at a trip to Alaska. The tune Israeli Waltz is a composition dedicated to his motherland Israel. The album opens with a great tune entitled Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams, a tune originally a hit by Bing Crosby, who recorded it in March 1931. It has a great intro by Tamir Hendelman on the piano before it takes off ............

In Le Tombeau de Couperin Tamir shows that he ejoyes both classical music and jazz, in a tune dedicated to the music of Maurice Ravel. The Charlie Parker composition Anthropology belongs, together with Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams and BQE to my favourites. These tunes are Tamir Hendelman at his best - maybe because his strong piano playing reminds me to the music of Monty Alexander. This tune BQE, received consideration for a Grammy in the category Best Improvised Solo. There were two more Grammy considerations for this album for the categories of the Best Instrumental Album and the tune Israeli Waltz was considered for the Best Instrumental Composition.
