Taylor's Wailers

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
The album Taylor's Wailers is one of those great almost forgotten little jewels of the hard bop period. Art Taylor, who was born April 1929 and passed away February 1995, directs here an all-star sextet which recorded this album in February 1957. He played with Howard McGhee late 1940s and made his first recordings with Coleman Hawkins ( 1950-1951). During the years to follow you can find him as a drummer in groups led by Buddy DeFranco, Bud Powell, Art Farmer, George Wallington and Miles Davis. He formed his own group, the Wailers, in New York to play in The Pad, a jazz club in Greenwich Village. This album was recorded by this group for Prestige.

The Wailers featured Donald Byrd on trumpet, Jackie McLean on alto saxophone, Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone, Ray Bryant at the piano and Wendell Marshall bass. Art Taylor, of course on drums. The tracks for this album contain two Thelonious Monk compositions: Off Minor and Well, You Needn't. Charlie Rouse, who is playing the saxophone on these tracks should become known as Thelonious Monk's saxophone player. He joined Monk in 1959 and would stay into his quartets until 1970. Art Taylor too played with Monk for some years. It is interesting to learn that when these two Monk compositions were recorded Monk wasn't known to the general public yet. The tunes are played more swinging then Monk should play later. It has the same weird harmonies, but not yet the strange Monkish rhythms. Interesting to compare these versions with Monk's later recordings.
Ray Bryant, who is playing the piano in this band, is doing a very good job here and I liked his opening chorusses in the first tune: Batland. The front line, featuring Donald Byrd, Jackie McLean and Charlie Rouse were, at the moment of recording, still young and rather inexperienced musicians, starting to develop their own sound. Another great tune is Cubano Chant, composed by Ray Bryant, and later recorded by great musicians like Oscar Peterson. The second track, C.T.A. on this record, was recorded March 1957 by Art Taylor's Quartet featuring a young John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Red Garland at the piano, Paul Chambers bass and Art Taylor drums. This tune was recorded on the same date as the ones with The Prestige All Stars for the album Interplay For 2 Trumpets And 2 Tenors
Try to give this recording a try on your record- CD or iPod player !

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

Hans, great article about a fantastic drummer and his album. I was looking at a Prestige discography last night and it seems like he was the house drummer for Prestige. If he wasn't, he might as well have been, seeing as how he appeared on so many albums for that label.
