Jazz Is Dead ...... Critics in the 1980s did us believe that. New styles had been developed, free jazz, avant-garde, fusion, crossover and jazz-rock. A lot of fans didn't recognize this as jazz anymore. But few musicians explored their roots in the 1950s, like the group of young musicians, the so-called Young Lions, like Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Joshua Redman, James Carter and Roy Hargrove did in the 1990s. The Bopera House was one of those 1980s groups that played in the tradition of hard bop style as played some decades earlier.

The Bopera House contains five musicians: John Marshall on trumpet, Tardo Hammer at the piano, Ralph Lalama on tenor sax, John Webber at the bass and Tom Melito on drums. Its first recording were released by V.S.O.P. as the Metropolitan Bopera House, but the Metropolitan Opera objected, so they changed their name into The Bopera House.

A few weeks ago I heard John Marshall playing the trumpet in a concert at the Porgy en Bess Jazz club in Terneuzen ( south west part of The Netherlands) with Ferdinand Povel on tenor saxophone and at that occasion I bought some records, including this "new" LP, titled The John Marshall-Tardo Hammer Bopera House ( V.S.O.P. # 72) released in 1989. I guess this record will go down in history as the last new LP I bought.

It contains seven tracks all recorded at the Rudy Van Gelder Studios in Englewood Cliffs, NJ (USA) on the 10th of June 1988, almost twenty years ago. It is an album with a lot of good music, played by some musicians that know the past and make music that feels still new and sparkling in 2008.
Every cut is laced with spirit and substance. These five players aren't fascinated with the superficial. They have not only absorbed the roots and explored the corridors, they demonstrate the virtuosity required to keep the music fresh. ( Stuart Troup - New York Newsday (1988))

JOHN MARSHALL - FERDINAND POVEL QUINTET: Extra concert from the John Marshall - Ferdinand Povel Quintet on the 26th of April 2008 in De Werf in Bruges (Belgium). This group played a few weeks ago at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen (The Netherland) and I was impressed by their performance.

Jazz Is Dood ...... Dat kon je vaak lezen in de jaren tachtig van de vorige eeuw - critici deden ons dit geloven. Er waren nieuwe richtingen in de jazz ontstaan, zoals de free jazz, avant-garde, fusion, crossover en jazz-rock. Er waren een heleboel fans die dit niet meer als jazz herkenden, vandaar ..... Er waren maar weinig groepen, die, ondanks dat, doorgingen op basis van de muziek uit de jaren vijftig, de bebop en hard bop. In de jaren negentig ontstond er uiteindelijk weer een stroming, van de zgn. Young Lions, zoals Wynton en Branford Marsalis, Joshua Redman, James Carter en Roy Hargrove, die weer volgens de traditie gingen spelen. In de jaren tachtig gebeurde dit ook, als een soort Young Lions avant-la-lettre door de Bopera House groep. Deze Bopera House was één van die groepen uit de jaren tachtig, die de bebop en hardbop traditie voortzetten.

De Bopera House bevatte vijf muzikanten: John Marhall op trompet, Tardo Hammer aan de piano, Ralph Lalama op tenorsax, John Webber aan de bas en Tom Melito op slagwerk. Hun eerste platen werden nog uitgebracht door het V.S.O.P.-label als de Metropolitan Bopera House, maar omdat de Metropolitan Opera daartegen protesteeerde, veranderden ze hun naam in The Bopera House.

Een paar weken speelde John Marshall in een concert van het John Marshall - Ferdinand Povell Quintet in Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen en bij dat concert kon ik een LP van deze John Marshall-Tardo Hammer Bopera House ( V.S.O.P. # 72) kopen. Deze uit 1989 daterende LP zal, denk ik, de geschiedenis in gaan als één van de laatste LP die ik nieuw gekocht heb.
