If you walk into a record shop in The Netherlands, CD records seem to be old fashion - young people download their music as digital files and don't want it on such a shiny little disc. The same story could be told late 1950s when LPs took the 78rpm disc's seat or 1980s when LPs were replaced by CDs.

Jazz is as a music style not so common in the record shops too and if they have reserved space for jazz CDs you only find cheap boxes or records dumped for clearance prices. On the covers no information about the group or the recording date. Rubish for a serious collector.

A few weeks ago I bought a bunch of CDs on internet, and one of those CDs was such a cheap record released by the Weton-Wesgram firm, an organisation that dumps this kind of cheap products. Artist: Thelonious Monk - no more information but the titles of the five tracks. Yesterday I played it, on the assumption that the music was copied from one of the known recordings of Monk.

It wasn't ! Great - The music I heard was unknown to me - it came from an unknown session. A quick research learned that the music might be from a 1963 Japanese TV broadcast. Here's the info I found:

The music was released on a Baybridge UPS 2172 recording before; the discography learns. Great !

Someone who only wants to have Monk's music will have enough info on such a disc, but the seious record collector wants the recording dates and personels. Of course I'm happy with this small treasure I found and I have to make some research to be sure, but the record sounds well ( although one of the tunes was cut off, probalbly due to the fact that the original tunes wasn't complete recorded.

I found a small fragment of Monk playing the second track, Blue Monk, that is on the CD too. The fragment is from 1958.

Als je een platenzaak binnenloopt in Nederland ontdek je dat CDs niet meer in zijn. De doelgroep, jongelui van 15 tot 35 kopen geen platen meer, maar downloaden hun digitale bestanden. Eigenlijk is er niets anders aan de hand dan eind jaren vijftig toen de 78-toeren plaat plaats moest maken voor de LP of in de LP in de jaren 80 werd ingeruild voor de CD.

Als je jazz wilt kopen in een platenzaak moet je nog maar hopen dat ze een bakje voor je favoriete muziek gereserveerd hebben en dan blijkt dat meestal vol te staan met goedkope bozen of CDs, zonder nadere informatie, die gedumpt worden tegen bodemprijzen. Geen informatie over opnamedata of bezettingen - rommel meestal.

Een paar weken geleden kocht ik een stapel CDs op het internet en één van die CDs was zo'n goedkope dumpplaat uitgebracht door Weton-Wesgram, een firma die dit soort lowbudget platen dumpt. Thelonious Monk - Blue Jazz staat er op de cover en alleen de vijf titels en verder niks. Gisteren de CD opgezet ( zeg je dat van een CD?) en in de verwachting bekende nummers te horen bleek het een voor mij onbekende opname te zijn. Een snel onderzoek leerde dat het waarschijnlijk opnamen zijn van een Japanse TV uitzending uit 1963.

De muziek is oorspronkelijk uitgebracht op een Baybridge UPS 2172 plaat, volgens de discografie.

Iemand die naar Monk wil luisteren zal genoegen nemen met het feit dat er geen informatie gegeven wordt; de serieuze verzamelaar wil meer. Deze goedkope uitgave is voor mij in ieder geval een klein juweeltje, een puzzelstukje in het grote geheel, ook al wordt één track op het eind hard afgekapt, alsof de originele opname niet langer is.Ik vond een kort fragment waarin Monk het nummer Blue Monk speelt, track twee van deze plaat, in een opname uit 1958.
