Jon Seiger

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
Today I love to point you to a great US musician, Jon Seiger, band leader of his All-Stars, the Metropolitan Stompers, The Rhythm Aces and his Cuban group Cultura, trumpet player, vocalist, piano player and organist, who became very popular in Argentina, thanks to a concert he gave five years ago, in which he played and sung in the style of Louis Armstrong. Listen to his version of Strutttin' With Some Barbecue.

I was pointed to this great musician thanks to a series of tunes I found made at the Mar del Plata XVth International Fest Jazz en Abril on which Jon Seiger was invited as the Special Featured Artist. This festival was scedulded five years ago, from the 4th up to the 6th of April 2003 and he played with his Jon Seiger All Stars, which featured Argentine musicians like Carlos Bianchi on trombone, Juan Ignatio Calno on reeds, Fernando Romeo at the piano, Juan Antonio Rodriguez on bass and Pablo Gonzalez on drums. This band was labeled as Jon Seiger y sus All-Stars de Argentina. This concert was a great succes and the audience liked his Louis Armstrong imitations, not only on his trumpet, but also as a vocalist, imitating Armstrongs specific rasping voice.

This festival in Mar del Plata was his first visit to Argentina, but his performances were such a great success that he had to return for a second tour along Argentina that same year. In November 2003 he returned for concerts in Cordoba, Buenos Aires and, again, Mar del Plata. In 2004 Jon Seiger was touring Argentina twice, which indicates how popular his music in Argentina is and since these tours he seems to be in Argenitina each year to play his Una noche con Louis Armstrong program ( = An evening with Louis Armstrong) .

Listening to the tracks of the 2003 Mar Del Plata concert, five years ago, it is stunning to learn the striking resemblance between his trumpet playing and vocals to Louis Satchmo Armstrong. Jon is also a master on the piano and he also plays the organ and directs a choir in Rochester NY where he lives. I love to end this small contribution to this great newborn Satchmo with a fragment of a six-hands piano piece, played by on Jon Seiger, Jose "Pepe" Romeo and Fernando Romeo in I'm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover.

If you love to hear Jon playing and singing you should try to be next week in Rochester NY ( 10th of april 2008) or if you live in Argentina you should visit the 2008 XXth International Fest Jazz en Abril in Mar del Plata, scedulded from the 18th up to 20th of April 2008.

BOPERA HOUSE: Hi Hans! First, compliments on your wonderful website; I'll visit often. Second, thanks for posting about the Bopera House recording at http://jazzcorner.com/.
I have most of Danny d'Imperio's recordings, but forgot about the Bopera House and I've been a huge
fan of Marshall's since his days with Buddy Rich and Lalama - heard him many times with the Mel Lewis band
at the Village Vanguard when I lived in NJ. Take care, Marla

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

I'm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover.

Take care, Marla ( keepswinging@live.nl )
