Sherman Irby

Today I love to spotlight Sherman Irby, alto saxophone player. I heard him at least two times as part of the Roy Hargrove Quintet. He recorded a great album for Blue Note on the 20th of February 1998, ten years ago, titled Big Mama's Biscuits. (Blue Note 856234 )
Sherman Irving, born in Tuscaloosa, started to play the alto saxophone while a teenager after playing the piano, the violin and the guitar before he finally made his choice: the alto saxophone. He studied at Clark-Atlanta University. Although classical educated, he became fascinated by the jazz and his first job was in the Johnny O'Neal Quintet. In 1994 he left for New York where he started on a cruise ship, playing music to entertain the guests. Back in New York he often played at the Greenwich Village Club Small's, where he became the club's regular band, with piano player James Hurt, Eric Revis on bass and Dana Murray on drums.
Being the regular band of Small's he became known as a skilled hard bop sax player and was invited to make an album for Blue Note, titled Full Circle. He made tours with Roy Hargrove late 1990s and during these tours I heard him at the two above mentioned concerts at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen (in the southwest part of The Netherlands) on the 10th of January 1999 and on the 12th of May 2000, where he was a good sparringpartner for Roy. These quintets featured Larry Willis, Gerald Cannon and Willie Jones III. The album, Big Mama's Biscuits, was recorded with his trio, on some tracks enlarged with guest players. His trio contains Gerald Cannon, the large bas player, also part of Roy Hargrove's group I heard and Clifford Barbaro on drums. The album contains 11 tracks, most originals, composed by Irby, like the title tune Big Mamma's Biscuits, played as a sextet with Roy Hargrove on trumpet and some of his former Small's club quartet members, like James Hurt at the piano and Dana Murray on the drums. I love this tune, because it has a great opening by Gerald Cannon at the bass and of course the trumpet of Roy. Another great track is Conversing with Cannon, which has a great theme with bass player Gerald Cannon.
At this moment Sherman Irby just finished a serie of concerts with Wynton Marsalis and his Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. He puts the finishing touch on a project of the music of Duke Pearson with the Organomics. It also contains a recently recorded DVD. I hope to inform you about that later.

Vandaag staat de Amerikaanse altsaxofonist Sherman Irby in de schijnwerpers. Ik heb hem minimaal twee keer mogen horen spelen in het Roy Hargrove Quintet. Hij nam tien jaar geleden, op 20 februari 1998, een mooi album op getiteld Big Mama's Biscuits. (Blue Note 856234 )

Hij studeerde op de Clark-Atlanta University en raakte gefascineerd door de jazz, hoewel hij eigenlijk klassieke muziek studeerde. Zijn eerste band was het Johnny O'Neal Quintet. In 1994 vertrok hij naar de grote stad, New York, waar hij een baan kreeg op een cruise schip, in het orkest, spelen voor de gasten aan boord.
