Keep (it) Swinging: Spring Is In The Air

You can't have missed it ... if you live in the Western part of Europe .... Spring Is In The Air - the birds are singing - the first flowers show their colors and jazz clubs and festivals plan its concerts .....

On Sunday the 17th of February the John Marshall - Ferdinand Povel European Quintet will perform at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen, in the southwest part of The Netherlands. John Marshall, not to be confused with the 1941 born English drummer with the same name, who plays the trumpet in the Big Band of the WDR, performs with the 1947 born Dutch tenor sax player Ferdinand Povel, who has made a career in jazz, most of the time in Germany, now educating sax in the Amsterdam Conservatory. It is said that their quintet belongs to the best Europe can offer nowadays. Well, after next weekend I can tell you !!

On the 7th of March 2008 Roy Hargrove will give a concert, you shouldn't miss. Roy Hargrove is one of the Porgy en Bess family - he loves to jump in one time a year. Great !! Don't miss it !! On Sunday the 16th of March 2008, Heyn Van de Geyn will present Walter Norris, in his series of concerts as Artist in Resident in the Porgy en Bess Jazz club. Walter Norris is, like John Marshall, an American artist, now living in Germany. Walter Norris plays the piano and lives in Berlin. Heyn Van de Geyn likes to experiment with music that fascinate him: last month he presented the Belgian Rony Verbiest, a concert that ended a bit disappointing, due to some technical problems; never mind .. Heyn can take a revenge.

Although actually not in Zeeland, I think I should list a CD presentation by the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, the leading Belgian big band. Its great album Brussels Jazz Orchestra - The Music Of Bert Joris, now gets a follow-up in a 2CD titled Brussels Jazz Orchestra - The Music of Michel Herr. Michael Herr is a great composer and arranger who lives in Belgium. This CD presentation will be at the WERF Jazz Club in Bruges (Brugge) in the north-western part of Belgium, near the Duch border. I hope to review this 2CD later.

James Carter in Middelburg ( June 2007)

Last weekend the names of the artists to play at the Jazz Festival Middelburg (May 2008) have been listed. Middelburg is the capital of the province of Zeeland, near the estuary of the river Scheldt, and has a long tradition in, most traditional jazz orientated jazz festivals. During its last year the festival scedulded more modern jazz musicians like Philip Catherine and James Carter. This year the festival promises again names that guarantee good music: Archie Shepp, the near legendary reed player will perform at the inner square of the Abbey of Middelburg, like the popular Swedish band E.S.T. ( = Esbjörn Svensson Trio ), and, not to forget, the great Maceo Parker, the great saxophone player. Another greatjazz musician, guitar player, John Scofield will perform in Middelburg as a leg up to the jazz festival on the 8th of April 2008 at the Stadsschouwburg of Middelburg.

Het kan je niet ontgaan zijn ...... als je naar buiten kijkt ... Het voorjaar zit in de lucht .... de vogels gaan zingen, de eerste bloemen springen uit de grond en jazz clubs en festival-organisators presenteren hun plannen voor de komende tijd. ..... Spring Is In The Air

Op zondag 17 februari 2008 staat een concert gepland van het John Marshall - Ferdinand Povel European Quintet in Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen. John Marshall, niet te verwarren met de in 1941 geboren Engelse drummer met dezelfde naam, speelt trompet in de big bands van de WDR. Hij treedt op samen met Ferdinand Povel, tenorsaxofonist, die carriere maakte in de jazz, voornamelijk in Duitsland en nu in Amsterdam op het Conservatorium les geeft. Men zegt, dat deze groep tot het beste behoort wat Europa op dit gebied te bieden heeft. Wel, na het weekend weten we't.

Op vrijdagavond 7 maart 2008 komt hij weer en volgens mij is dat nog maar net bekend geworden: vers van de pers dus, zullen we maar denken: Roy Hargrove. Roy is zowat kind-aan-huis in Porgy en Bess en komt elk jaar even aanwippen. Fantastisch toch !! Op zondag 16 maart 2008 treedt Heyn Van de Geyn op met Walter Norris, het derde en laatste concert in een serie optredens als Artist in Resident. Walter Norris is, net als John Marshall, een Amerikaan, die in Duitsland is gaan wonen. Hij speelt piano en woont in Berlijn. Heyn Van de Geyn houdt er van om te experimenteren met muziek; afgelopen maand presenteerde hij de Vlaamse bandeonspeler Rony Verbiest, een concert, dat door o.a. technische problemen in het water viel; half maart dus een herkansing.

Hoewel geografisch niet echt in Zeeland, toch hoort de CD presentatie van het Brussels Jazz Orchestra, de belangrijkste bigband van België, hier in dit overzicht thuis; Brugge leunt immers tegen Zeeland aan! Het schitterende album The Brussels Jazz Orchestra - The Music Of Bert Joris, heeft een vervolg gekregen, getiteld The Brussels Jazz Orchestra - The Music of Michel Herr. Michael Herr is een bekend componist en arrangeur, die de nummers voor deze 2CD bewerkt heeft. Ik hoop deze 2CD binnenkort te kunnen bespreken. De CD presentatie vindt plaats in Jazzclub De Werf in Brugge op 22 en 23 februari 2008. Gaan luisteren dus ......

James Carter in Middelburg ( juni 2007)

Afgelopen weekend werden de namen bekend van de artiesten, die dit jaar met Pinksteren spelen tijdens het Jazzfestival van Middelburg. Middelburg heeft, als hoofdstad van Zeeland, al jarenlang een festival traditie, waarbij de nadruk altijd op de meer traditionele jazzstijlen lag. Sinds vorig jaar is dat met succes omgebogen en konden we genieten van optredens van grote namen als Philip Catherine en James Carter. Dit jaar staan er ook weer grote namen gepland: Archie Shepp, de bijna legendarische saxofonist zal optreden op het binnenplein van de Abdij, net als de populaire Zweedse band E.S.T. ( = Esbjörn Svensson Trio ) en de saxofoonspeler Maceo Parker. Overigens, als je een fan bent van goeie jazz, dan kom je in Zeeland wel aan je trekken. Op 8 april treedt namelijk, als opstapje naar het festival, niemand minder dan John Scofield op in de stadsschouwburg van Middelburg.
