The Yale Blues

On the 24th of January 1928, eighty years ago, the Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians recorded the tune The Yale Blues for Victor.
The Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians were one of those popular dance orchestras of the 1920s and the musicians to be heard on this recording, directed by Fred Waring were Nelson Keller, George Culley and an unknown on trumpet, Jim Gailland and Clare Hanlon on trombone, Fred Campbell flute, Elton Cockerill tenor sax, Earl Gardner and Will Morgan alto saxophone, Bill Townsend, Frances Foster and Fred Culley, violins, Tom Waring, the brother of Fred at the piano, Fred Blick banjo, Ed Radel sousaphone and Poley McClintock drums. In those days vocal groups were very popular, and I wrote about that before in my contribution about Bernie Cummins. Members from the band, Bill Townsend, Frances Foster, Fred Culley and Fred Waring himself formed a vocal quartet. The tune The Yale Blues was written by Seger Ellis and was one of those popular 1920s "college tunes" dedicated to The Yale University.
Fred Waring was born in 1900 in Tyrone PA (USA) and passed away in July 1984. Although he directed great bands until the 1970s, I like his 1920s recordings the best. In 1928 when he made this recording he appeared as the headliner in a Broadway show titled Hello Yourself and made a trip to Europe, where he had a lucrative engagement at the Ambassadeurs Club in Paris.
I found this song on an LP in the Grannyphone series, titled The Yale Blues. These series of dance music LPs were released in the 1980s by the Dutch Stichting Granny's Records, founded by Harry Coster, who was reponsable for the transfers together with Chris Ellis and Herman Openneer .
A great eighty years old souvenir from a long-gone period in entertainment that needs some recognition on this special date.

Hoewel hij zijn hele leven door grote bands begeleidde, tot in de jaren zeventig, blijf ik bij zijn bands uit de jaren twintig; die kunnen me het meest boeien - de rest is me te populair. Toen hij in 1928 deze opname maakte was hij razend populair met bijvoorbeeld de Broadway Show getiteld Hello Yourself waar met grote letters zijn naam prijkte op de aanplakbiljetten. Ook werd hij geboekt voor een serie lucratieve optredens in The Ambassadeurs Club in Parijs.
Ik vond dit nummer op een LP in de Grannyphone serie, getiteld Waring's Pennsylvanians - The Yale Blues ( Grannyphone 03316). Deze serie werd uitgebracht in de jaren tachtig door de Nederlandse Stichting Granny's Records, opgericht door Harry Coster, die samen met Chris Ellis en Herman Openneer verantwoordelijk was voor de productie.
Een mooi eerbetoon aan een tachtig jaar oud souvenir uit een lang vergeten periode dat vandaag best even wat extra aandacht mag; met of zonder tachtig kaarsjes !
